Blackduck59 Posted August 27 Author #8451 Share Posted August 27 @Heidi13 Hi Andy. I thought I would introduce you to my "different" thread. I started this years ago to ask my down under friends for tips about Oz. Over the years it has become a shoot the breeze place for anyone who knows about it, As luck would have it I am fortunate to have found many regulkars and will be visiting a number of them when we finally get down there. I got your message on the other board and tried again to email you and it was again "undeliverable" I think I may have given the wrong email over there. Please email me at lyle.duck at shaw.ca we look forward to hearing from you. Retirement came a few days early so I'm happily free for any social events. Cheers, Lyle & Lynn 1

Blackduck59 Posted September 3 Author #8453 Share Posted September 3 So we had a nice visit with Andy @Heidi13 and his wife Judi on Friday. It was nice to see Andy again and to meet Judi (unfortunately she wasn't feeling well last year) Good food, good beer and great conversation. Then yesterday we met Rich and his friend Sue (from Georgia and LA respectively) at their ship and showed them a local's view of our town. That was another great time. We dropped them off back at the Westerdam (the same ship we will be on next year) and bid them fair winds and a trailing sea. They are on a 50+ day voyage to Japan via Alaska with a return via Hawaii. We have certainly enjoyed our visits with CC people whose posts reveal a sence of humour and pleasant nature. We hope to continue to welcome new friends whenever they are in our area.
Blackduck59 Posted September 15 Author #8454 Share Posted September 15 So big congratulations to young Australian Oscar Piastri for a very entertaining win Azerbaijan today. I'm thankful that neither Sergio Perez nor Carlos Sainz were injured in their shunt, which was I believe rightly ruled as a "Racing Incident" with no further action. Of course seeing Lando in front of Verstappen makes me happy.
Rare MicCanberra Posted September 16 #8455 Share Posted September 16 Is that a car racing or a star wars reference ?

Not so much. I saw the original in theatres once when it came out. I'm not big on Sci Fi in General. As it turns out several of the buildings in Baku are pretty futuristic. It was quite a race, very entertaining.

I just hope the Alpine is a bit more competitive for his rookie season.
Rare arxcards Posted September 17 #8458 Share Posted September 17 Not completely different, but off the beaten track. I am looking at picking a London hotel and think I have narrowed it to a handful of possibilities. Does anyone have a standout location or hotel from past experiences in London & the UK? I am not looking at cheap, quirky, trendy or luxury, but a good location, comfortable with a moderate price. A nice view would be a bonus. We are in via Heathrow and heading out to Southampton after a 6-night stint.

I've stayed in a couple of the ones in Bedford Place. They were very comfortable. I liked the location and the two nearest Underground stations are on the Waterloo line which links to Heathrow. I can't remember exactly which of their hotels I stayed in - I think one was the Clarendon.

We stayed there in 2015 in a room too small to fit our suitcases in (I kid you not, we had to leave 2 in the corridor and climb over the rest to get the door open), right next to a service corridor where the banging and crashing all night of trolleys etc meant little sleep, not to mention the piped music into the service area and staff who decided we weren't the sort of guest they preferred (don't think they much cared for Australians as the rest of the guests were either upper crust poms or rich Arabs) and treated us like the poor relation and all of this for the gob-smacking cost of $830AUD per night! My fault really, we'd have been better at a Holiday Inn or similar. This hotel was booked by our TA and I obviously didn't read the Itinerary properly and probably thought that was the cost for our stay rather than per night.

This one is currently on the top of our shortlist. The only snag is they have surge pricing on one of our nights, which is preventing me from jumping in and making a booking there. Just on the Waterloo side of the Westminster Bridge, it ticks all the boxes of being easy to get in, get out, and easy to get to key tube stops to make our way around. I am closely watching the pricing on quite a few hotels in the Waterloo/Lambeth North area. If we want to pay the few extra bucks, the views look amazing, and we will see the river & bridges lit up on the Saturday night. Rooms | Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London I am still keen to learn from personal experiences, so thanks for making sure I skip that one. If I want to cook, I stay in the Markets Area on the Southbank. I catch a bus from there to the theatre district. Depends on the pricing at the time. Just remember that it takes time to get around in London, so choose a location which makes life easier. The last time I stayed at a reasonable motel on the train line en route to Putney, where I have friends. I have stayed at some great places in London. The best were free, when my daughter lived in London, for five years.

I agree, with limited time in a city, it is best to look for a place where you can get about from easily. The tube will get a lot of use from us as we make our way around, and we will be mobile enough to cover plenty of distance on foot.

So far, it seems all of our endevours can be done via hops from Waterloo or Westminster stations plus Westminster wharf.
Rare lyndarra Posted September 20 #8467 Share Posted September 20 When in London I stay with my cousin in Shepherd's Bush which is served by Hammersmith Station. I found the trains and buses into the city very convenient and frequent. There appears to be a good selection of hotels in the area.
NSWP Posted September 20 #8468 Share Posted September 20 (edited) On my trips to UK inc London, we stayed mostly at pubs in the country or premier inns/holiday inns in the cities/towns. The holiday inns and premier inns generally offer breakfast and dinner and reasonable prices. Book direct with their sites. Never been keen on Air B and B's etc. Always love full english. I wish we had family in London, but Barb's family are along the east coast, We will get some time there at the end of our trip. Shepherd's Bush also has the largest shopping centre in Europe - apparently. I am trying to keep her out of there and Harrod's. Thanks Les, Not a B&B person myself either. We are not looking for breakfast included, as we want to eat on the go and make the most of our days. I am not sure I could crawl after a breakfast like that, as yummy as it looks. There are a couple of Premier Inns on our shortlist - you have no choice but to book direct with them. Basic, but good value it seems.

If it's the one I'm thinking of I have been to it, I think it's a Westfield. We went to see a movie there, Kingsman - Golden Ring IIRC
