The truth of the matter is, they don't actually take the obc until you're on the ship...at least that is how it has been in the past.

And the benefit of that is they take it first from non-refundable OBC, so if you had used any refundable OBC pre-cruise to book an excursion, if you do not otherwise spend it during the cruise, you can get it back after the cruise.

That's interesting and pretty smart of them.

And they do it automatically until you OBC is gone.   I prefer to leave some intact, and pay some with a credit card.

With the current perks (free drinks and gratuities!) I've got on these cruises, I don't know what else I can spend the OBC on. I don't spend time in the casino, I'm not a jewelry person. At the most I need my unique tree ornament and maybe a t-shirt.

Balcony Dining. Overpriced clothing. Ship's shore excursions. In the past we never really used the casino. But with OBC we charge casino play to our on board account. Play for a while and cash out. Sometimes we win, sometimes lose, but you never really use when playing with OPM.

The stockholder OBC has been around for decades and is counted on by loyal cruisers.  It is a fantastic program with many benefits to CCL.

1. It encourages brand loyalty.

2. It makes it more difficult for other entities to do a hostile takeover of CCL.

3. It costs little to CCL (or other cruise lines) to grant the OBC as all funds must be spent on the ship.

It is a fantastic program that costs little compared to the other methods the cruise lines use to get new cruisers and retain the ones they have already attracted.  While it is awarded from year to year it is almost an automatic approval each year.

The shares owned by those who bought them for the OBC benefit compared  to the total number of shares existing is minuscule, no effect at all on a takeover attempt.

However with one family controlling about 50% of CCL shares (at least before recent offerings), no takeover would occur without that family agreeing to it.

Very well said. I've been saying the same thing, but you stated the reasons very much better. I wish I could give you both a thanks and a like.😊

And they usually pay dividends (at least pre-pandemic).  Stock price is still running less than half of its pre-Covid high.  When I bought mine, we didn't want to pay out-of-pocket for the shares, so I had my broker for my IRA buy them from existing funds in the IRA. Easy peasy and no out-of-pocket expense.

I usually don't ever eat in a specialty restaurant. However, I've got the one credit to use now with the Perks, and I'll be solo cruising for the first time. I'll do at least one meal and see how I like it 🙂 Part of my solo plan is to force myself to sit with people I don't know at a large table seating, and get me out of my shell.

I do like Bingo, so I'll use some of it with that. I am so sensitive to cigarette smoke that I won't spend much time sitting in the casino.

So you know where we are coming from. Some information from another that does not like smoke. But, we do not have allergic or other medical reactions. Table games are always smoke free. Smoking is permitted at some slots while playing. These are in one section of the casino. Formal evenings are normally smoke free. We don't spend more than 15 minutes when playing slots. $100 goes very fast.  If we play a table game usually longer, maybe half hour.

Carnival stock dividends have been suspended for the time.  CCL today is selling at $20.40 falling $0.20 today.

They are trying to get compensation from the governmet for all the mess going on now, obviously they can't pay a dividend when they aren't making any money.

Since most of the cruise lines are technically foreign owned (they almost all are flagged in other countries--to avoid paying US taxes and labor laws...they are not going to be eligible for any government bailouts. It's why they didn't get money, like the airlines did, in the first round.

I was, apparently, not clear. I was just trying to say that they were paying dividend pre-pandemic...If things clear up, they might again in the future.  Just trying to point out that I felt it worked well for me financially between the OBCs and dividends.

Of course...for all of us.

I emailed the form and brokerage statement to them on Sunday and I see the credit on my account this morning.  This is for an August 2021 Alaska cruise.

Resurrecting this thread to ask:

what is the email address to send the form and statement for the shareholder credit, please. I'm hopeful my two currently booked cruises actually cruise in December, and January.
