I don't understand the logic of why kids DON'T need to be vaccinated when al the adults are. Those un-vaccinated kids leave a huge gap in the protection of everyone on board.

That is not how it works. I dont know why this is so hard to understand. The vaccine protects YOU. One dose cuts hospitalisations by 80%+ after 1 dose. 2 is over 95%. Deaths are extremely rare and mostly people who are very unhealthy and immune compromised but also they dont track those deaths accurately either.

You will not die from covid because a kid has a mild covid infection. If you are really unlucky you might get a mild symptomatic infection or a totally asymptomatic infection which is basically another word for no infection at all.

let me explain something to you. A cruise ship will never be a sterile environment and neither is anywhere else you go in life. better get used to it.

This thread really is just mindless bickering with very few comments on the original topic.

"What are the chances of a KSF this spring?"

Royal has been hemorrhaging money for 51 weeks and whenever cruising does resume it will be at a reduced capacity.  Using up a certain percentage of those reduced occupants with a non revenue group does not make economic sense. Connect the dots and you have your answer.

We will now return to our original programming consisting of arguing about vaccines and what not.

I wish they were non revenue. I could afford to cruise more often.

I understand where you are coming from but bottom line is, they don't drink, don't gamble, don't buy "art" - the high profit centers for cruise ships.

That describes plenty of adults as well, especially those who have reached the high loyalty ranks and get free drinks each night.

The more I read it the more I think they'll only allow people 16 and over to cruise out of Israel.

I read that article and couldn’t decide if that was the case or not.  The way it’s worded, either interpretation could be accurate.

im just wondering how much of an interest in cruising the Israeli population has.  Is there pent up demand like in China, or is this gonna be the test that basically ends cruising as we know it?

Something like 30% of cruise passengers on RCL are traveling with children.

Actually, in today's world it's something like 0% of cruise passengers are traveling with children.... as Royal isn't cruising. I only say this because I'm willing to bet that in an effort to get the ships back on the seas, Royal would be happy to roll w/ 70% of the customer base for awhile until things improve on the vaccine scene.

Explain to me why you think that Royal would waste revenue producing slots on a KSF promotion, especially since it's mandatory that there will be a reduced capacity and it's yet to be determined regarding the vaccine situation.

You have to realize that it's no longer 2019 and cruising as we know it will be changed, at least for the short term.  This may include no kids for free because Royal wants to generate as much money as possible.

I think all of the Singapore cruises have been KSF.

I'm not saying they would. It seems to me like RC's pricing right now reflects what they've said outwardly: demand is high, and they're expecting to operate at reduced capacity. Kids sail free is almost never offered over the summer or holidays anyway, where the same is true (with the notable exception of the last go around). They can fill up the ship to whatever limit it is applicable without it.

I would expect as capacity limits are removed, kids sail free will come back. Probably before the end of the year for early spring 2022 cruises.

What I'm asking you to keep in mind though is that it's not like RC can only sail with the high revenue casino crowd and maximize it's profits even at limited capacity. Families fill up a crucial fraction of the berths, and are critical for their profitability. They don't put carousels on the ship for nothing.

At this point in time there is no reason to even waste money to advertise any type of sale. People have been reporting good prices on cruise planner items but that's just bait to generate more revenue.

Customer Lifetime Value. Don’t want to lose those patrons to Disney, etc.

Those families that want to cruise Disney will do it no matter what any of the other mass market cruise lines do promotion wise.  Disney gets a premium dollar for what they offer and RCI, Carnival, NCL  and MSC can't compete, even with a KSF promotion.

I am surprised about all of this. So many people happy about the possibility of sailing without kids.... so obviously they don't have young children or they are happy to cruise without them.  Imo I think the cruise ships will  be very quiet and very boring without kids.... I have cruised with my daughter at very young age and as a teen and during day at pool will be boring without kids on board.... there is no nicer sound of  hearing the sound of kids laughing and having fun. Absolutely amazing... should put a smile on everyones face.  I think if RC do take this line they will lose a lot of customers as RC are a family friend cruise line... or so I thought.  I am not happy if we would not be able to cruise with our teenage daughter. We work all year and look forward to our summer FAMILY holiday so very disappointed....lets hope not all cruise lines will do down this route ... cos it is not a route I am willing to take. Kids are the future of cruising ... or so I thought. I will research other cruise lines and maybe it will be a good thing to venture out to other cruise lines who will accept kids on boards...

I'm sure RCL is looking at their existing bookings... You would need strong demand in the remaining 70% to cover a ship at 50%. There's also a good portion of that 70% (latest estimates are over 25% if it reflects the country at large) that would refuse a vaccine. I'd be willing to bet it's not there, though I suppose you could argue that it would come after making a restart announcement and may be enough to cover a very limited restart (but would not be scaleable until things change significantly and a vaccine requirement is removed). We aren't like Israel... As a society they're willing to accept a green pass notion that essentially banishes those who have passed up vaccines (note this doesn't include those who haven't been offered vaccine, like children) from the public sphere. Can you imagine the uproar if we even talked about that as a possibility here in the US? There's a lot of flak to be taken on by a private company proposing a shade of the same thing when the spheres of government at large won't even do it.

The whole argument is not as simplistic as just sailing with or without a demographic of people onboard.

Many disagree with that opinion.  The sound of a two year old shrieking..in pain, laughter or anger, is physically painful to my husband due to several ear surgeries.  Kids do not make a vacation enjoyable for those who want to relax by a quiet pool and read or work on their tan.  Nor do I enjoy being tackled as I walk down a Pway and a pack of roaming pre teens come barreling around the corner.

I think Disney does the best at providing child free areas for the adults who want that experience while still catering to the families that want to do everything together.

kKSF is offered when they need to fill berths.  Right now, they are not having any problems doing that even in this major time of uncertainty .  There are more than enough adults who will take up the available spaces that they won’t need to pander to the demographic that is, to put it meanly..cheap and stingy.  Any free berth still costs money to the cruiseline.  If in nothing else but basic wear and tear and revenue lost because half the cabin isn’t purchasing alcohol or bingo cards.

I believe that there are a few cruise lines that are adults only, you may want to check those out to save your husband from the physical pain of hearing kids having fun, or are hurt, or angry.

Or would you like Royal to "pander" to your demographic instead?

well there is the solarium pool area for adults only to go to. I have always thought RC catered for everyone... why bother putting all the cool pool areas with slides, specific teen areas etc if they are not able to cruise.

The hand writing is on the wall. Royal has been progressing towards family oriented cruises, especially with new ship builds. They become more attractive to families. The older ships are slowly being phased out. I think Virgin is an adults only cruise line.

The only mass market cruise line that is adults only is Virgin, who has yet to begin sailing and I believe that initially the longest cruise they have is only 5 days long.  There are niche lines like Saga, who is based in the UK and only had 2 ships or the ultra premium lines like Crystal that generally do not compete with the same clientele as RCI.

You do realize that this will only be a short term thing until a vaccine is developed for children.  And the entire possibility is moot if RCI deems it unnecessary that children need to be vaccinated in order to cruise.  There will be no reason for you to research other cruise lines because more than likely once one of the mass market lines determines that vaccinations will be needed for 100% of the occupants on board, all of the other mass market lines will follow suit, thus eliminating kids on board for the short term until there is a vaccine for them.  It is just speculation at this point when that vaccine would be ready.  It is also speculation regarding the decision that the lawyers and bean counters will make regarding whether children need to be vaccinated or not.
