Within 1-3 days, I will get 5-6 bids and I just pick the best offer. I give them a call and give them my booking number and they call Viking and have the booking transferred to their agency. I really don't expect any other service from a travel agent--I prefer to do all my own research, choose my own flights etc.  So its a win-win for both of us. Within 14 days of booking, I will purchase travel insurance checking both Squaremouth and InsuremyTrip to compare policies/rates (doing it within 14 days gets coverage for any-pre-existing conditions). Then I call Viking and ask them to be sure to send my documents/luggage tags to my home address, otherwise they will send it to the agent. Last I make sure when I receive the new booking confirmation from the agent, that my discounts and cabin credits are shown. Keep in mind, that you have a limited length of time to transfer a booking to an agent. I think with Viking it is 60 days, but I do it as soon as possible. Then, 10 months before the date of debarkation, I go online and choose flights, call Viking Air Plus and ask them to book. With Air Plus, I don't have to go through the agent. So that is my process, gleaned from many years of booking cruises. There is only one way that I know of to get a better price... and that is to become a travel agent yourself. When do you pay Viking and how does that work with the travel agent you select? Often with a Viking promo code, you have a very short time to pay in full.

Each promo will have detailed payment terms in fine print of offer.

 

You are correct, for close-in promos V often requires payment at time of booking, or shortly thereafter.

 

For 1 year or 2 years out promos, you would refer to payment terms of promo offer.  Sometimes PIF 1 year or longer prior to voyage.  Pax with a future cruise already booked, may request a 6 month PIF date.

 

I pay TA on their third party secure payments platform.  Charge is posted to credit card statement as Viking Cruises, not name of TA.

I assume you are in US and it is a larger market where TA compete for the bid.

Yes, I make the deposit when I book, then transfer the booking. I always check the travel agent on the Better Business Bureau to see their rating and I always take out travel insurance that covers financial default, as when you pay an agency, you are counting on them to pay Viking. I have never had a problem with this. The bidding service screens their agents.  You don't have to do the booking yourself. You can do the bidding process first, then let the agency book the cruise, but I like to have control of that process myself. I don't want to find out after the fact that some agent forgot to apply a promo code.

We always book directly with Viking and transfer to our travel agent.  Our PIF is made directly to Viking through ACH so that we can get the 3.3% deduction.  We also use that method for booking excursions and if we purchase SSBP.  We've never had to make a payment through our TA.

I'm assuming in that case that you did not get a reduction in the price of the cruise? By paying the agent, he can apply a portion of his commission toward the cost. You just have to weigh whether the savings offered by the agent is greater than the 3.3% deduction. If the agent is only providing a cabin credit, then (I am now learning and thanks for that info) Viking can be paid directly.

Yes, we use a promo code with the Viking agent.

We get that discount.

The booking is transferred to our travel agent.

We log into MVJ and any excursions or SSBP we book is at the 3.3% discount.

The final payment is a 3.3% discount. 

In addition, we receive refundable OBC from our TA.

And, right, we pay nothing to our agent. We pay Viking directly through ACH. That is what gives us the 3.3% discount. Our agent has nothing to do with these payments. Although she does send a reminder to do that about 10 days in advance.

I also believe that Viking limits the amount that agents can give their customers on Viking cruises (perhaps unlike other cruise lines).  So an agent "giving" their commission to the customer would be in violation of Viking policies - if they ever got caught.

The way your comment is written, I think the comments above should set you straight. Viking caps guest benefits based upon sail-date lengths in refundable OBC and doesn't allow agents to rebate their commission monies. Booking or transferring a Viking booking to an agent allows you to still ACH the monies over. Also, if you have Big Box credit card, you can pay thru visa credit and still get the 3% travel CB from Citi.

Yes, I know all that - that's what I was trying to say.

I had thought the person was saying agents would give back some of their commission (beyond max OBC) and thus could compete with each other to see which one would offer the lowest net price - as does happen with some other cruise lines.

Well, I have learned something. I had been told by agents that Viking limits the amount of cabin credit they can give, but nothing about rebates. I had no idea it was against Viking policy. In future, I will only use the bidding site to maximize my cabin credit. Used that way, it is a helpful tool.

I remember looking at Egyptian River cruises pre war and distinctly remember Viking was sold out for 2024. I didn't really want to do one.... Purely was interested in the cost.

New Viking River brochure arrived today.

Two new extensions that include Swiss rail transfer.

 

We took the Zermatt / Glacier Express extension in 2018 and it was one of our most enjoyable vacations.

This sounded pretty good, unitl I read the fine print about paying really early . . .
