Rare Sea Dog Posted September 27, 2022 Author #101 Share Posted September 27, 2022 (edited) Movement 2 : Izumi, She's a Geisha Please! For the second movement of our Symphony I am doing a solo lunch at Izumi. Linda doesn't like sushi so she went to Johnny Rockets. So for you music lovers out there typically the second movement of a Symphony is is usually slow and lyrical and creates a quiet mood. Izumi was just that and it was perfect. There is something about eating sushi sitting by a window looking out onto the Caribbean that seems really right. I’m not naive enough to think that my sushi was caught that day as it was probably flown in frozen but none the less I’m sure it’s fresher than the sushi I get in my hometown in the middle of America. Nice intimate restaurant with one side the sushi side and the other side the hibachi. Simple black and red tones adorn the restaurant’s decor. Reminds me of my time in Tokyo where everything is so organized. Unlike last night’s Jamie's garage sale decor this is my style, clean, uniform and stylish. Our talented sushi chefs. I don't know what roll that is but it looked delicious. Here is the menu. With the UDP you can have 1 small plate, 2 large plates and a dessert. Trust me this is enough food. My server Phoebe Is from the Philippines. Polite and courteous I will be happy when the crew can take off their masks and I can see their facial expressions. Something about a mask takes away the intimacy of a conversation. Phoebe first served up Edamame to start with. Nice and warm and chewy with the sea salt For a cocktail “She’s a Geisha” wow!!! This is one of the best cocktails I have ever had. Fresh berries with pomegranate shaken with rose syrup and junmai grade sake. She's a Geisha Cocktail: Ingredients: 6 Blueberries, plus a few extra for Garnish 3/4oz Rose Syrup, 1/2oz Pomegranate Syrup, 2oz Sake Process: Muddle together the Blueberries, Rose Syrup, and Pomegranate Syrup in cocktail shaker Pour sake and ice into cocktail shaker and give it all a good shake, shake shake, to blend those berry flavors Pour in rocks glass, do not stain First up small plate which I can have one. Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna. Creamy tuna, masago, spicy aioli, chili-garlic oil, hot crispy rice, jalapeno The fried rice and crispy outside was almost like a hash brown of rice with tuna on top and a jalapeño on top to give it some spice. spicy 4 pieces of which I enjoyed very much. Best eaten as finger food without chopsticks. After all sushi is the ultimate finger food and you're encouraged to eat these delicious bite-sized pieces with your fingers. With the rolls I had to have a Sapporo beer. Something I’ve always done. To me sushi pairs well with Japanese beer or Sake. My first roll was the Ryu Futomaki Roll. The roll had 10 pieces on a bed of crab . The roll is made up of Tempura-fried assorted sashimi, scallions, spicy aioli, champagne sauce, unagi sauce, cream cheese, wakame salad, house giner-teppan dressing with spicy chili thread. This roll is gigantic and can not be eaten in one bite it’s almost easier again to eat with your fingers. My second roll was the Truffled Creamy Lobster Roll. The roll had 8 pieces. It consisted of Hamachi, Salmon, asparagus, lobster tempura chunks, house ponzu, spicy chili thread, spicy mayo, scallion, truffle oil and unagi sauce. Wow this was so good. By far my favorite out of all the times I have eaten at Izumi. You do have to watch the little lobster ball on top as it can roll off before you get it into your mouth. Almost better to eat with fingers here too. But I did see one person later who did it a good way with chopsticks. First eat the lobster ball on top with chopsticks then pick up the rest of the roll with chopsticks and eat it. Presentation of the sushi was well done. That’s what I like about sushi. Good sushi should be a work of art. I ate about half of everything I received. It’s a lot of food. I feel kind of feel guilty wasting some of the food but I have to save room for dessert and then another dinner in 5 hours. Even though you can order two large plates one is more than enough. Bottom line with the unlimited to can try more but it’s hard to finish everything. Sesame Ball for dessert were great. Soft and chewy do be prepared they come out hot and the insides are hot so don't try it in one bite let them cool first. Izumi is will always be one of my favorite places to dine. Such as great atmosphere with beauty in food and a not rushed tempo. This was slow beauty at it's finest. And speaking of beautiful. On the way back I saw a newly wed couple getting there pictures taken. I paused so to not photo bomb them and wished them much love and lifetime of happiness. I think they appreciated my sentiments. Wish I had time for a nap. Now time to get ready and see an afternoon showing of "Hairspray" in the theater. Rare bobmacliberty Posted September 27, 2022 #102 Share Posted September 27, 2022 Great Izumi review with fantastic pictures. We love Izumi sushi…our favorite specialty restaurant (usually). I agree completely with Japanese beer but for me, it’s Kirin Ichiban

If you ever see me on a cruise with my Sea Dog shirt come say hi. I always enjoy the piano players that play in the Schooner. On Symphony it was a piano player from England Daniel Marks. Lets see how about trying a Hennesy Old Fashioned? I met Schooner bartender Donald who was a great guy and great bartender. He took good care of me. I made sure to tip him $1 per drink. After several of these it was time to say goodnight. It had been a long day and a great one. I was looking forward to being nestled all snug in my bed; While visions of sugar-plums danced in my head; This is our favorite place also. Unfortunately, the last night of the cruise the waiter proceeds to tell me that I can't get my PG and that the new price is $17.00 so not covered by a diamond drink. I had been getting the PG all week there. Was frustrating to have him pull this the last night.
Rare cruisegal40 Posted September 27, 2022 #104 Share Posted September 27, 2022 I agree with you on the solarium pool area. It was very hot. I don't remember it being that hot on Allure a couple of years ago. The food never seemed to be hot either. Did you notice that?

Some restaurants the food was good and hot. some had dishes that were warm but not hot. I imagine it happens as the cooks put the food up in the window waiting for the server.

Rare crewsweeper Posted September 27, 2022 #107 Share Posted September 27, 2022 Just catching up! Thus far the Symphony has been my fav of the Oasis class ships. But waiting til spring to try the Wonder. Great review and nice memories. Thanks for that. I had a taxi from MIA to Brickell area back in May. It was $45. But traffic was horrendous. Return trip 4 days later was $30 with tip. Glad you got to go the Versailles. There are a ton of Cuban places many as good or better. But it's such an iconic place that set the standard and everyone needs to go their at least once.
Rare Sea Dog Posted September 27, 2022 Author #108 Share Posted September 27, 2022 Hairspray "The gift that keeps on giving." Linda and I went to 3pm matinee production of Hairspray. I am a huge John Waters fan. Mostly because he is a huge Christmas music collector like myself and has even produced his own Christmas album, “A John Waters Christmas.” While he mainly is known as an American filmmaker, writer, actor, and artist. He rose to fame in the early 1970s for his transgressive cult films, including Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble. When he was asked about what he thought about Hairspray becoming a broadway musical, Waters joked that “Hairspray” is the “gift that keeps on giving” because it became the basis for the Tony Award-winning 2002 Broadway musical, a 2007 film version of the Broadway show and a live NBC broadcast in 2016 of the musical. Here are some video scenes from Hairspray. This performance was a gift. The performance and cast was Broadway caliber. The actors that played Tracy Turnblad and her mother (played in the movie by drag queen Divine) Edna Turnblad stole the show. The music was a blast and production had some real nifty effects. Some of my pics. Hairspray remains relevant to today's audiences as it reflects many current events and issues in U.S. society and can be used to address a variety of themes, including, racism and bias of all kinds, body image, individuality and identity, student activism, community-police. They received a warm standing ovation and rightfully so. It was the "gift that keeps on giving". 13
Rare Sea Dog Posted September 27, 2022 Author #109 Share Posted September 27, 2022 Interlude After the show we went to the Copper and the Kettle for a little pick me up. As I stated earlier the C&K has a great whiskey and bourbon selection. Better than I've ever seen on a Royal ship. My choices. First an Elijah Craig Small Batch Then an Old Forester. While Linda enjoyed a Chocolate Martini from the Rising Tide Bar. I love how the bartenders do the decorative drizzles on cocktails. I must learn how to do that. Ok got to move on. Tonight dinner at one of our favorites.

Exactly correct same with drink package if it’s over the drink package limit you just pay the difference plus tip , so if it drink was 17 and limit is 13 you pay 4.72, we always have lots of tiny charges on our bill since we have wine a couple of dollars over the limit.
Jimbo Posted September 27, 2022 #113 Share Posted September 27, 2022 On 9/26/2022 at 2:20 PM, Sea Dog said: Movement 1: Jamie’s, Is He Really Italian? Every Symphony is an elaborate musical composition for full orchestra, typically in four movements. In this case since Symphony of the Seas has more than four restaurants I will be doing more movements. The first, Movement 1: Jamie’s Italian On Symphony of the Seas, Jamie's is located in Central Park on Deck 8, which was is one of my favorite locations for a specialty restaurant. As you stroll through the living greenery you can’t help but wonder that you are in a special space. Decor is simple but tables and chairs looked like a hodgepodge of tables and chairs from a neighborhood garage sale. They had a tv monitor showing Jamie Oliver cooking like one of his cooking shows no sound so what’s the point. For those who don't know, celebrity Chef James Oliver is a British chef, restaurateur, and cookbook author. So basically he's not Italian. He is known for his casual approach to cuisine, which has led him to front numerous television shows and open many restaurants. People either love him or hate him. Obviously he is not in the kitchen cooking so it’s hard to know if his food is really represented here. Let's see how it tastes. The Menu: James was our server from India 7 years with Royal. We were seated by the door which unfortunately they kept open the whole time music from the classical guitarist was very loud coming through and a large group of people partying made it a little hard to have a conversation. I love classical guitar but on this night it was a little over bearing. I started off with a Bellini cocktail with Prosecco and peach Purée which was sweet and wonderful. Garlic bread Parmesan with rosemary and garlic. Good taste but I wish it was more warm. Prawns in garlic with garlic crostini. Good and spicy Black Truffle Arancini. Crispy black truffle and mozzarella risotto balls with a truffled Bechamel sauce for dipping. It was really good but be warned the insides are hot (temperature) so let them cool down before popping one in your mouth. Meat plank with San Daniele prosciutto, Tuscan fennel salami, Nduja Artisans coppa picante & pistachio mortadella with tomato crostini, bocconcini mozzarella, pecorino Sardo & chili jam, focaccia, olives and pickles. A meal in itself. Careful not to eat too much there is more food coming. Burrata soft cheese with greens cherry tomatoes and thin crisps which was called carta di musica Truffle Tagliatelle. Truffle cream fresh truffle and nutmeg with a heavy whipping cream sauce. This is my favorite dish at Jamie's. After finishing the Bellini I decided to get a different cocktail the Negroni which was pretty bitter thanks to the Campari. Mellows out a little with the ice melting. Not my favorite. What does it taste like? A Negroni is a bitter cocktail but the vermouth and orange garnish add enough fruity sweetness to balance it out. The taste is herby, a bit rooty - think liquorice root - and then there are some deep dark fruit flavors Apologies for the bad pic! Linda had the Lasagna. Good but mushy noodles. It's like they cooked the noodles too long before making the layers and putting it into the oven. PRO TIP: Use no boil noodles. You don't need to precook. Just lay them into pan and layer. Comes out perfect. For me the lamb chops, medium rare. Grilled under a brick and served with agrodolce peppers and salsa verde. Very good. I liked these a lot Now for dessert. Epic Brownie Warm brownie with caramel ice cream with chocolate syrup drizzle with caramel popcorn. With Espresso Not crowded at all maybe 10 tables full all night. We spent some good time talking with the manager and our great server James. The food was very good and I left extremely full and satisfied. That's a lot of food for sure, have to be careful on the breads and the pasta's, they add up on filling you up. On 9/26/2022 at 3:58 PM, TravelGirlinDallas said: This cracked me up. Love it! Central Park 150 There is just something about walking into a restaurant and seeing a bottle of Louie XIII encased in glass with it gorgeous Baccarat Decanter and you just feel opulence. That is what I love about this restaurant. Going there on formal night just made since even though I just wore a jacket, dress pants and open collared shirt. I hate selfies. I have never figured out how to take a good one. Adorned with a beautiful fresco, heavy curtains and subtle lighting I felt like this was going to be a special place. To start you must try the Urban Garden Martini. Basically a cucumber martini. Cucumber Martini was refreshing and light as air tasting. The cucumber flavor mixed with lemon grass syrup is sweet but not overpowering. Just a delight to drink this cocktail with grey goose vodka with lemon grass syrup and a sweet and sour mix Here's the recipe email from Royal Caribbean: Cucumber Martini 3 (1/4 inch) Cucumber Wheels 2 Large Basil Leaves 4 Count or. 75 oz Monin Lemon Grass Syrup “Muddle” 2 oz. Sweet and Sour (1 part water 1 part Island Oasis Sour - Pour) 1.5 oz Grey Goose Vodka Our Server Tharshini from Maylasia was excellent. So sweet and personable. She really took care of us. After getting us our martinis she brought some delicious garlic bread with lemon thyme and pepper with sea salt. So moist and buttery. More flavorful than Jamie’s the night before. For appetizer I had the Braised Short Rib. It is served over creamy mascarpone polenta, roasted heirloom carrots, crispy onion and natural jus. This just melts in your mouth after being slowly cooked for 4-5 hours. The creamy mascarpone was so good as a base for the ultra tender short rib. The soup was incredible. Called a Sunchoke Veloute it is made with a black truffle cream sauce, shallots, thyme and turmeric. Tasted like liquid velvet. The only problem I had was siting in the over sized wide velvet balloon chair . The seat when I sat down are so low that the table height came to my chest. It needs new cushions. Maybe If I was 6’5 it wouldn’t be a problem but I’m 5’7”. For our mains we had the beef tenderloin for two. Served with truffle potato puree, chips, local baby vegetables, black garlic, and a selection of Bearnaise and Bordelaise sauces. We order individual portions. If you order the beef for two they carve it for you table side. In this case our entree was delivered to us. It was divine, perfectly cooked medium rare for me For dessert being a chocoholic I had to have the Chocolate Peanut Butter Torte with a black currant port sorbet.I really thought the sorbet complimented the chocolate well. Linda decided on the Fried Cheesecake I was so tempted to get a glass of the Louie XIII. I actual bought a glass for my retirement cruise last November. This cognac does live up to its hype. As you can see the prices are expensive. I thought about it long and hard. Maybe I use our $75 OBC to help for it. I finally came to my senses after being beaten up by the angel one shoulder and the devil on the other. It would be time to wait. Hmmm.... I thought we are coming back here on Day 7, oh the torture. I settled on a much cheaper and within our drink package glass of Hennessy Cognac there’s something about Cognac and chocolate that goes so well together. All I needed was a comfy leather couch in front of a fireplace with a smoking jacket on even though I don’t even smoke. Opulence and decadence, just how I like it. I love rum based old fashioneds I had them make mine with Bacardi 8, although my preference is Ron Zacapa 23 Solario, on Quantum. Unless you like them with a sweet finish, when made with rum, ask for them to use 1/2 the normal amount of sugar.
Rare Sea Dog Posted September 28, 2022 Author #117 Share Posted September 28, 2022 CODA We had no evening reservations and decided to check out some of the bars. First up, Boleros. Here Tequila is featured along with a band playing latin favorites. Lets try some things. A tequila old fashioned with Anejo Patron. Very tasty 2 oz. Patron Anejo .25 oz. Simple Syrup 1 Dash Bitters Orange Peel I did try the Patron Anejo "neat." It was pretty good but I think I’ll stick to bourbon neat. I also tried the Tequila Old Fashioned with the Patron Reposado and it was better and smoother than the Anejo which is actually aged longer than the Reposado. Oh the things you learn by drinking cocktails. Time to move on. Schooner Bar Schooner with a New Fashioned Soft brown sugar drenched in orange bitters muddled with pink grapefruit and fresh raspberries with southern comfort whiskey and a grapefruit twist. I really liked this. I could not find a recipe. The Schooner Bar used to have on their menu a "Baton Rouge." It was made with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum with Hennessy Cognac and Rose syrup. They tried a recreation with sweet and sour mix and it made it flat. It did not taste like the old version. Lavender Daiquiri Bicardi Superior Rum with addition of lavender Here is the recipe: 2 ounces rum (Bacardi Superior recommended) 1 ounce Lavender syrup Juice of one lime or lemon (about 1-2 ounces) Instructions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the rum, syrup and ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass. To garnish, serve with a flower from your garden and a lime or lemon twist. Nightcap A Brandy Alexander. Oh how I love this cocktail Ingredients: 1 1/2 ounces cognac 1 ounce dark creme de cacao 1 ounce cream Garnish: grated nutmeg Instructions: Add cognac, dark creme de cacao and cream into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or a coupe glass. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg. Time to head back I'm getting sleepy. gee I wonder why????? Wait what is this????? A line at Sorrento's? Ok so I had to find out what this is all about. I only had Sorrento's one other time and I was not impressed. Sorry please don't hate me because I know there are a lot of Sorrento's fans out there. So what did I do? Was the alcohol talking to me? Yes I stood in line to try some pizza. I wanted to try their "Carnivore" Pizza as I figured it would be meat paradise. Instead and I apologize for the bad picture because of the blue lighting I was surprised that it had very little meat. Just more pepperoni. It was very greasy. It did not taste horrible or anything like that. Maybe the alcohol was talking but I can honestly say I've had way better pizza. Please no flame wars here. I'm just being honest. I will try it again. I promise. Finally a lovely stroll through Central Park at night. And finally home. Oh look!!! Tomorrow we arrive at Costa Maya, Mexico
