No idea but there seems to be a number of cruise ships recently caught out by it. The Viking ship was also denied entry by Hobart and by Adelaide. The last I heard she is out at sea to have to problem fixed by divers before going to Melbourne. There must be a lot of disappointed passengers on the Viking ship and rightly so.

It was because Adelaide could not assemble the required Immigration entry at four days notice. The ship will be cleaned out of Australian waters. Going to Hobart wasn't an option after NZ declined port arrival.
Rare arxcards Posted December 30, 2022 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2022 I can only think there has been a lack of inspections until recently. Most of these ships spent a year or more languishing at tropical anchorages prior to returning to cruising. Some had a drydock that gave them a clean and freshly painted anti-fouling hull, while many did not. I wouldn't expect there to be an issue with Carnival Luminosa, Pacific Adventure/Encounter or any other ships that had a drydock during the shutdown, but there were many that are now overdue. Wasn't this one picked up on an earlier thread? After an inspection in Tauranga, they had a modified itinerary that involved them heading for Wellington, then Cook Straight and direct to somewhere near Adelaide for hull cleaning. I don't believe they were refused entry into Hobart, and it was skipped to allow them time to get to SA, get the hull cleaned, then hopefully arrive back to Melbourne on schedule on 2nd January. The Melbourne call would also be in doubt due to time constraints, and that would become the 5th missed port if that happens. She is still heading toward Adelaide, so the cleaning mustn't have happened yet.
Rare arxcards Posted December 30, 2022 #5 Share Posted December 30, 2022 Note: Melbourne arrival & departure times for 2nd Jan are now 11am & 11pm. Delayed, but still on the shipping schedule. I suspect whatever cleaning to be somewhere off the SA coast tomorrow morning.

If I ever had the opportunity to cruise with Viking and this kind of thing happened , I would be VERY unhappy!
Rare Jean C Posted January 1, 2023 #11 Share Posted January 1, 2023 Just watched a news snippet on NZ TV, they said Viking Orion problem was algae, that a team of specialised divers were scraping the hull and that it could take a few days - eek, wouldn't like to be stuck going nowhere like that 🤔
irishwitchy Posted January 1, 2023 #12 Share Posted January 1, 2023 Regent Explorer is having the same issue, I guess no one reads the rules! https://www.mpi.govt.nz/import/border-clearance/ships-and-boats-border-clearance/biofouling/biofouling-management/

They just started the scrape yesterday. They had to find specialist divers as it's being done in the open sea and you can't conjure that up esp at this time of the year. Looks like they are still there in SA. But moving now. https://viking.panomax.com/orion Edited January 1, 2023 by Pushka

I would only presume they have pre-booked provisions, some passengers embarking/disembarking, or immigration has been pre-arranged for Melbourne. As Milford Sound is your first port in New Zealand on your cruise I can see that it has to be done or all other ports would be closed to you 😬 Hopefully by the time we board on 21st all will plain sailing 51 minutes ago, arxcards said: They are currently scheduled to still go into Melbourne for 8pm till 11pm. Did hear that Viking will be giving back 50% or more of the fare people have paid due to this stuff up, not sure if thats Cruise Credit or direct credit back to bank accounts/cards. Expect someone at Viking (And Azamara) is in trouble as well, surely, they would have been notified of this requirement by NZ Authorities?

Reminds me to always book airfares through cruise line because they look after passengers who book air through them. Otherwise you are on your own. Can you imagine in these times of high air fares.
buchhalm Posted January 1, 2023 #21 Share Posted January 1, 2023 I am just imagining a few divers with scrubbing brushes from Bunnings attached to the ship by a rope..... That must cost a fortune. And it's not that these guys can stay under water for hours on time...

I miss visiting both my daughters overseas annually because they live locally now. I mentioned that my girlfriend in Boston was given a trip to Italy by her only son. My elder daughter said "But we give you places to stay!". So true!

Do you think it will be clear to all cruise ships what is required by then. there must be faults on all sides not making it clear regarding the requirements! It's a timely reminder for all cruise lines. Maybe NZ hasn't been checking recently and remember there was Covid - a gap of 3 years, so things have been slipped.
