Formal night dress code?

Hello,

We will be doing our first transatlantic cruise. We are hoping to travel light. I have a few great cocktail dresses that pack well and don't take room. But, hubby's dinner jacket takes so much room! Is there any way we can dine in the dining room on formal night if he wears a nice shirt and tie? Or do we absolutely need a dinner jacket?

We will be on Sky Princess November 10 2023. Thank you for your help!

He will absolutely be fine.  Doesn’t seem as dressy, after the restart. as in the past. But, in Europe they do dress up a little more than we do out of the US.

Whatever makes him comfortable.

You’ll see a little bit of everything.

I'd say that you absolutely don't require a dinner jacket of fancy dress. Just a shirt & pants or black slacks with a decent top will do very nicely BUT there will be a few people who will say that since it's a TA cruise most people will go the extra mile to dress up.

It's your choice but don't feel that it's a "requirement" any longer on Princess.

In a word, no. But take into account you're flying out of Canada in November to London, both places are chilly that time of year. Then fly home to Montreal in late November. I like to wear a jacket on the plane.  There can also be quite a breeze on deck.

I'm pretty sure for comfort's sake he will bring a sport coat for the plane, connections and excursions anyway. Whether he wears it dining is up to him and no problem. If by dinner jacket you mean a white jacket and tie, those are rarely seen these days, even on TAs where they tend to be more dressy. A sport coat gives options and is not a burden if worn on the plane, but handy for travel.

The more informal you dress the more you need to tip the wait-staff.

If you dress more formally you can smoke more in the casino.

If you tip your bar-staff better then you will get a better pour, but only if you don't pay attention.

No matter what anyone says, if you tip your room steward extra you can play loud music not only in your cabin but anywhere you go.

Don't listen to the naysayers.

Do Aloha Shirts for men work on formal nights?  They are allowed in all restaurants in Hawaii at

any time?

ANY dress (this includes Aloha shirts and shorts) on ANY Princess ship on ANY itinerary (this includes “[not so] formal nights”) in ANY dining room.

You can wear whatever you want whenever you want, but do you really want to?

We are somewhat traditional in dress, and we try to look a bit fabulous when cruising, because we enjoy the fancy experience. Perhaps I am a bit of a fashionista, and I have helped train my DH!

I would never let my husband dress down so much that he would not look good next to me in our photos.  If I am wearing a long gown, then he has to do a tuxedo (Cunard), or a suit.  If I have a cocktail dress, he has a sports jacket at a minimum.

When we are in Hawaii or the Caribbean only, he can wear his Aloha shirts. He does have a few seersucker suits and linen sports coats as well.

By the way, there are so many mens' sport jackets in light weight materials that even for a Winter cruise you could find a very nice light wool to take. Husband has velvet, corduroy and cashmere jackets to wear in the Fall and Winter, but they are really a bit too heavy to pack for a cruise.

November will be cool--we would only wear warmer clothes, especially on a transatlantic.

Have a great time, and do not worry too much about outfits. The truth is in fashion it is pretty easy to blend in anywhere--the challenge is to stand out!

Our life is on the formal side, and my husband loves suits.  I will look the best of me on formal nights and so will my husband.

We looked blend in at least in the crowd around our dining table.  It's a cruise, and people could be there to celebrate something in their life; if they wanted to dress up on non formal nights too, they could.  And we had done that.

I know some people can go on a cruise vacation with just one carryon luggage, but that is not us.  Luckily, most airlines allow one free checked bag and that solves our problems.
