bftjprc Posted December 14, 2023 #1 Share Posted December 14, 2023 Decent size (2 ft not counting the tail) near south beach. Definitely do the "stingray shuffle" while getting into the water.

We have seen lemon sharks too.

ATG Posted December 14, 2023 #5 Share Posted December 14, 2023 In July we saw a lemon shark. The lifeguards suddenly got everyone out of the water and said there was a hammerhead shark. We saw the fin zip across the water, I had no idea they moved that fast.

NoShoes2 Posted December 14, 2023 #9 Share Posted December 14, 2023 Last March, my wife was sitting in shallow water and had one swim right up to her. Needless to say, she was pretty freaked out initially. 🙂
TheDawg79 Posted December 14, 2023 #10 Share Posted December 14, 2023 Extremely common for there to be both sting rays and lemon sharks.

Wheels Up Posted December 14, 2023 #12 Share Posted December 14, 2023 The first time I ever saw a stingray was in 2003 snorkeling at Coco Cay. There were bunches of them then. I used a whole waterproof disposable camera taking pictures of rays and eels. In the 20 years since then, I’ve moved close enough to the gulf coast that day trips to the beach are a common occurrence and we're used to seeing sharks and rays all the time. For those unfamiliar with saltwater predators, there’s a very easy way to tell if there are sharks in the water: 1) Wade out into the water until you’re about knee deep. 2) Bend at the waist and put your hands into the water. 3) Make a cup shape with your hands. 4) Bring the water up to your face and stick your tongue into the water in your hands. If it tastes salty, there are sharks in the water. 1
4bythebeach Posted December 14, 2023 #13 Share Posted December 14, 2023 Have also seen quite a few stingrays there. In October, we saw a manatee alongside the boat. That was a first for us at Coco Cay.
cruiseboy89130 Posted December 14, 2023 #14 Share Posted December 14, 2023 They are working on a stingray package - see one stingray $29 + 18% - see 3 stingray's $59 + 18% and there is a lemon shark + stingray combo for only $49 + 18%👍 1

smokeybandit Posted December 15, 2023 #17 Share Posted December 15, 2023 (edited) Small harmless lemon sharks, but it is a bit of a jolt for a second or two when you see one swim by your legs for the first time. Coralc Posted December 15, 2023 #18 Share Posted December 15, 2023 This kind of reminds me of coyote sightings on Nextdoor. One seems to pop up every other day. Stingrays live there. Coyotes live here. It is not uncommon to see them. ☺️
