Boarding day small bag check

Recommended Posts

There will be X-Ray machines you have to put your bags through, similar to airport security. You will have to pass through it in the terminal before you board the ship. It will be the same at each port if you get off the ship; when you get back, there are X-Ray machines you must put your bags through when you reboard.

I seem to remember someone mentioning that there’s a bag check on boarding day for carry on bags while rooms are being readied. I’m going on the prima. Is there one, where? Thx

I have read that it is available on Prima, but I can’t recall where. Just ask when you get on board.

That's not what is being asked.  He's looking for the bag drop off area so he doesn't have to carry his bag around while waiting for rooms to be ready.  🙂

We were just on the Viva and the carryon bag drop was in one of the main restaurants near the Belvedere Bar. We dropped off bags and went out to explore Old Sam Juan. I know this does not answer your question regarding Prima, but hopefully it is the same/similar

Depends on the ship.

Some are using the casino where you throw you stuff on the floor in a roped off section. They try to keep it separate from muster stations (I.e., main dining rooms)

They don’t just “throw your stuff on the floor.” An experienced cruiser who has used the bag drop before would know that bag drop is located in an area with one entrance and exit to keep it secure and it is not thrown in. Crew members will record your cabin number and tag your luggage. Some ships give you a luggage claim ticket. In the past year, I have used the bag drop on every cruise. It is has been in Bliss Lounge.

For Prima, I believe it was the Improv club across from Syd Norman's.   I saw a lot of backpacks and  small bags there as we boarded.  There was an employee checking them in.

On the Jewel class it tends to be in the Bliss lounge, they attach a cloakroom ticket to each bag and give you the other half of the ticket as a receipt. The bag is kept in a roped off area with a member of staff looking after them. We always use this service.

I had to ask 6 different crew members on the Joy last week before I found one that knew what I was talking about.  When we finally found the correct location, we were the first to drop any bags and we boarded in group 22.  They definitely don't advertise it and don't make it easy to find.

I just got off the Sky last week and did not see a crew member in the luggage holding area or anything other than a sign that indicated that this was the spot.

I'm on the Sky later this month.  So, there was just a place to dump your bag(s) without someone watching them?

It was the mojito bar. I'm not saying that no one was there. I just didn't see anyone when I walked by... twice. Maybe they were further inside the space?

Last year on the Prima it was in the comedy club.  A few months ago on the Getaway it was in the casino.  I did notice a number of bags being dropped off so people definitely take advantage of it.  I don’t see how leaving your bags in a designated area is any different from the crew leaving them in the hallways on embarkation day, or putting them in the hallway overnight if you don’t want to take them off yourself when you disembark.

As an experienced cruiser having done 7ish cruises on NCL since they restarted the bag drops (because of the delayed room availability) a few are well organized and a few are literally a pile of bags on the floor with little or no control or oversight. Some give you a ticket. Some just let you leave your bags. It is not the baggage valet at a hotel with shelves and lockers.

Last week, even when they announced “rooms ready”, the stateroom stewards were still cleaning some rooms. And some people were asked to “come back later”. Our steward had 24 rooms and said that it is impossible to do a proper turnover of that many rooms in the time allotted. People could drop their bags, but the rooms were open and not secured.

Off topic…but it’s unrealistic that a steward could be expected to service 24 cabins…especially during peak Spring break where cabins likely have 3+ occupants.  IMO that is just wrong in so many ways.

I believe it, the week we were getting off the Getaway in January 2023 our room steward was cleaning 16 cabins. She was very happy to be going home that month because right after that NCL was switching over to the once a day and adding cabins. She said if she was there she would be cleaning 22-24 cabins a day including 8? Haven Spa cabins

I really appreciate this info. I will check the small venues and restaurants on Prima when I board. I would want to leave it somewhere tagged and secured.

I'm on Prima.  The drop off area was the Improv.  There was a big sign in the Atrium.  I didn't use it so can't say how secure it was.  For both legs of my B2B, the rooms weren't ready before 2:30pm. At that time, they announced individual decks as they became ready.

Where did you find it on the Joy?  I’ll be on next month.

As an experienced NCL cruiser, I just checked and I have done 15 NCL cruises since the restart.
Bag drop/luggage check has been available on all cruises.  It is usually on deck 6 or 7 to make the process as easy as possible for passengers. Every bag drop I have used (which is many since I only do carry on luggage) has had an organized, secure system in place. All but one used a ticket system. Every single one had a document where name, cabin number and number of pieces of luggage was recorded. At no time did I witness luggage being thrown about or left unattended.

NCL may need more cookies on their ships but to their credit they do have a luggage drop.

You are missing a big distinction. These are bags you personally carry on the ship so you know they didn't get left behind. Not about theft, at least in my opinion. And you can access them at anytime if you need something before you get to your room.

Yes, that is how I saw them in the comedy club and the casino.  I always carry a bag on with medical supplies and the first cruise I just lugged it around because I didn’t know this service existed.  The second cruise, on the Prima, we saw the cabin stewards and asked if we could leave the bag in our cabin.  She said that was fine and we put them in the closet.  That was probably less secure than the baggage drop areas but I didn’t see that until later.  Now that I know this service exists I will use it going forward.

Also, an FYI to keep your meds with you.  Twice so far since embarkation, they've left a sheet in our cabins to check under our beds (huh?) for a misdelivered small piece of luggage.  They stated it contains medications.  My heart goes out to that person.
