Now even the captain is involved with increasing revenue!!

The best analogy that I heard was that Captain's of a cruise ship are like Mayor's of a small town. They oversea everything, have staff/officers that manage departments that report to him and of course go to openings and ribbon cuttings. They also go out in the community from time to time to meet the "residents" lol

When this happened (twice) on the Eclipse TA earlier this month, only 2 words came to mind:

Gauche.

Tacky.

The officers playing pool games is one thing, kinda fun. Same with dancing with the officers. Playing poker, though, to drag people into the casino falls under the tacky flag.

And I find it hilarious when X people bash NCL, Carnival and the like as being "less upscale" or "uncouth."

Nothing new here. About 5 years ago the Captain on Solstice was behind a stand signing ship's model. Looked like it boasted sales. Members of the staff, including the Captain have been doing ribbon cuttings for years. When the Captain greets guests, it's to create good feelings and boost future sales. Like it or not, it's business. Don't listen to the announcements if you don't want to hear them. Don't go to the events if you don't like them. Don't purchase if you don't need or want the products. Your cruise, your choices.

Did this somehow impact your cruise experience?

get a grip. ignore the Captain if you need to.
While you are not wrong , it does fly in the face of "Modern Luxury".

One of the best things about our first Celebrity experience was less hard sell after

experiencing this with Carnival and RC . It was a pleasure not having to ignore the unending ads

sent over the PA . By our 2nd Celebrity cruise the junk mail on our cabin door was annoying.

Is this the next step ? So yes it does "somehow impact your cruise" and it is annoying to have to

"ignore the Captain" . A huge deal ? Perhaps not but it does downgrade the experience.

It is simply amazing what some people get upset about.

I'd rather give thanks for the blessings I've received. At one time cruising was only a dream I never believe would come true. I have been fortunate to meet so many wonderful people along the way and have developed some very special friendships. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

2012 on Panama Canal there was a "big jewelry unveiling". Captain, Staff Captain, Hotel Director & one other officer each escorted a female passenger who was modeling the " new jewelry" down the stairway to the main foyer and the into the store. Drew a big crowd.

Same on our TA 2014 - what will be the next step? Maybe Captain and Officers taking care of the Art Auction and the Bingo?

PS. I didn't get upset about - but I classify that as tacky and not as modern luxury.

Nicely said, and I echo your sentiments!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, and to all of our American friends!

I couldn't agree with your sentiments more

I guess this isn't the time to bring up my own complaints that the ice in the drinks are too cold, I wish the Captain would do something about it, while he's wandering around generating cash flow ;)

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Hear, hear! :D It really is nice to have cruising on our list of things to be thankful for -- isn't it? Hope that you and your DW have a great holiday -- it was so nice to meet both of you, on Century this year!

Aboard the silhouette on the trans. not so bothered about the obvious increase of trying to increase revenue until tonight. Now the captain is at an Jewelry event! In my opinion, celebrity is really overreaching!! The captain also mentioned various activities the first sea day, all of which had additional costs. Sad really.

Please tell me why Celebrity is overreaching?

As I see it, if the Captain can generate more revenue, good for him. I doubt if it interfered with his Captain's duties.

I was on the same TA and I recall that when I saw the announcement of that "event" in the Celebrity Today, it was off-putting. It felt like an unseemly thing for the Captain to be doing. I'm sure it did not interfere with his duties, but it just felt unseemly. I'm sure that my reaction was also influenced by the fact that I find all of the hawking of jewelry, watches, and art on cruise ships to be over the top (not a day went by without our receiving an addressed invitation to a watch sale, for example, or the newsletter stuffed with ads), so having the Captain involved now seemed just too much.

Not sure why the controversy. In 1986 I took my first Caribbean cruise aboard Norwegian Starwood. The shop was selling large maps of the Caribbean suitable for framing. The captain came to the event and personally signed each and every sold map. He even plotted the course of the cruise on each map. This map is still on the wall in my den and is a subject of interest by visitors. ALL who bought the maps seemed very appreciative of his involvement.

Somehow this is the classic definition of apples and oranges, thus the "controversy".

Just got back from a long (2 month) trip and am catching-up on posts. This one made me smile as the Captain we recently had on a long HAL cruise we never do such as thing. But we do know one Celebrity Captain who would be great at selling jewelry and would have everyone laughing at his presentation (we are not going to mention names).

But the reality is that the current cruise business model relies on onboard revenue as the major contributor to profits. Even Captains need for their companies to have a healthy bottom line (it is their livelihood) so it is easy to imagine a Captain spending some of his time (especially during long sea days) helping out the shops. Given the way the cruise lines now subcontract out most onboard services (including the shops) one wonders if they could enhance a Captain's contract by giving them a percentage of any sales :).

I've never gotten the allure of "The Captain". Ok, he's got a very interesting and unique job, a responsibility and perhaps has nice stories to tell.

But still - "The Captain" ooooooh "the captain" I just don't get it.

Agree, think many still get the allure from the "Love Boat."
