But offensive to the staff "I know you won't give me good service without the $$$".

I've my own secret to good service which actually has nothing to do with tipping at all, we're just nice to the servers and show them respect. We do leave tips on the holidays we take when it's not automatically added but have to say in our experience you get just as good a service regardless in the vast majority of cases by just being nice.

Being friendly, showing respect and saying "Thank you" can go a long way in bring you great service and some unexpected extras.

Tipping $1 per drink is normal, even if you have a prepaid package. If that happened to me, I would just say "Sorry for the tip...I promise not to let it happen again." I would then just tip the other staff, but not the nasty one.

Oh, back to the subject at hand. It was my impression that the waiters (for drinks package) didn't receive 18% of the cost of the drink. Anyone else hear that? I thought it was a small portion of the gratuity that they receive for a normal paying customer.

Therefore, if I have the same bartender or barista who is nice to me, I tip $1 or $2 per drink. And always at social hour for Elite. Never once had one of them make fun of the extra $. I'm not sure how I would have handled it if it happened to me. I probably would have done the same as the OP.

I agree she may of been trying to be funny and complimentary of the tip and it just came out wrong.

 

We always get a stack of 50 1's and 50 in 5's just for tips before a cruise, usually when I settle into our chairs in the smoking area on the back of the boat and get my 1st beer I tip $5 right away and never have bad service on the cruise.

 

As a former waiter, way back when, I am glad I was not subjected to this "pool" system of tips, if you work hard and are good you get tips if you are a slacker and don't pay attention you don't get tipped, why should I pool my tips with the slackers ?

 

Totally, totally agree with you, my friend! I tip during the entire cruise. It has absolutely nothing to do with "bribery" or trying to "be rude to other passengers"!!!!???????? I do it because I want to and because of good service. And, I may add, it is always appreciated.

 

There will always be differing opinions on this board, but hey, life is all about choices, is it not? No right or wrong here. :)

I'll answer that question.

We DO tip people who are always in the same place (room steward, waiter, sommelier, Molecular bar tenders, etc.) the last day, but it's my experience that the outside bar tenders rotate bars and I can't find them on the last day.

So, as I said before, I usually just fold up a dollar or two and hand it with my sea pass card. I can't be the only one who does this because most of the bartenders are very skillful at unobtrusively sliding that bill into their pockets.

And it's NOT in advance, I do it because I've just received good service -

I've NEVER had a bar tender rudely do what was done to the OP>

 

But I was talking about those who were saying they tip big at the start and get great service for the rest of the cruise, a different thing altogether than what you do, tipping with each drink or each visit to the bar.

We are just back from the silhouette western caribbean. It was our first cruise and overall we had a great time. The ship is beautiful and food was great. The constant nickling and diming was so annoying and we joked that we wished there was a "do not disturb" add on we could purchase [emoji3].

 

Anyway, my only other complaint relates to the bar staff who were at times very rude. One comment has lingered on my mind over the past few days. At the sail away party, I ordered my first drink and tipped the bartender a single or two. She held the single up the rest of the bartenders and mockingly said "oh look guys you were worried they weren't tipping us? Here's a single - this will go far." and then proceeded to roll her eyes. [emoji53] I'm not easily offended and I know these people work very hard but I thought this was very uncalled for. I read that singles were a customary tip (We had already Prepaid gratuities), but maybe we should be tipping in 5 dollar increments now?

 

Anyway, just wanted to share and see if anyone else ever had a similar experience. Again, Great cruise and awesome new friends-but these kind of interactions are somewhat frustrating. But I'm sure there are employees like this everywhere.

You tipped in CASH? That would certainly draw a comment. I don't think I've ever seen cash used as a tip on Celebrity.

 

We tip in cash ALL OF THE TIME if the service meets our expectations. I for one would have asked for my dollar back is a bartender had made that comment. She doesn't deserve a tip at all. I also would have taken her name and reported her to the appropriate officer immediately.

Each night I give the hostess/host in BLU a 5 dollar bill and do the same if we happen to be eating in MDR. Husband always tips barteneder/waiter at Elite cocktail hour. I couldn't agree more. I pre tip as well. Most refer to it as a bribe. So be it. How one chooses to blow their cash is their own prerogative. Some do it in the casino and get a payback, most not. I blow my money in tipping. It pays off for me IMHO. If you disagree, that's fine. But the tipping must also include a sincere appreciation and thanks for the staff.

 

What the bartender did was uncalled for. I don't think this staff member realized the ramifications of their action. Likely not intention, but perceived is all that counts. Some people trend to talk out of their @$$ at times.

You did nothing wrong. A buck per drink is standard at any bar. Her behavior was absolutely ridiculous. I would have had words with her. lol

While I agree that comment is very unprofessional, I have a few thoughts. Pre-paid gratuities have nothing to do with bar staff unless you have a beverage package. Of course, the bartender would have no way of knowing whether you pre-paid your general gratuities or not, and either way, it does not excuse this kind of comment.

 

I wonder, though, if it is possible that you were preceded by a long line of non-tippers. If they just served a large number of customers without any tip, the bartender may have been saying something along the lines of, "Oh, look, we just poured ten drinks and made $1 between us." The "they" may have been your fellow cruisers in general, not you specifically. I think a dollar tip on a drink is reasonable, and I would be incredibly surprised if bartenders expected so more on a typical bar drink that they would scoff at $1.

 

Again, still unprofessional, but it may not have had anything to do with you. I have not had a similar experience, but it would sit ill with me as well if I had.

 

Even without a drink package, the 18% is tacked on to each drink. Also, one would think a bartender on Celebrity would know that the drink package includes the 18%. I don't know. My last cruise was great EXCEPT for the bar service. They have definitely cut back on staff and the waits were insane. MAybe she was stressed and/or overworked. But whatever the issue, she can take it up with management and not the cruiser.

The only place I tip extra for drinks is at the elite cocktail event because I'm not sure how they get compensated...drinks to us are free.

 

Had this happened to me, I would first ask for the $1 back....and I'd be heading for the nearest phone and asking for the food and beverage manager to stop by to chat....and I would have the name of the server who made the comment. It was not only out of line...it was probably grounds for being fired and let off at the next port.

 

Sorry you had this happen....based on lots of cruises on Celebrity your experience is a very rare exception to their excellent service.

 

A little bit of an over reaction don't you think? Why not just let it go move on enjoy the day but I guess getting all puffy about it calling people up yelling and screaming and getting people fired would be the fun way of going about it:eek:

Agree on all counts...and we do the same..... our casino $$ are less than $10 per cruise...no matter if it's 3 or 15 nights.... rather give those $$ away to someone who will appreciate them!!! But to each his own....just the way we do it...

We all pay a lot for these cruises and should have excellent service, not snide remarks.

We are usually people who 'let things go' but my jaw dropped when I read this. How rude ! I would have been really hurt / offended by the comment and then afterwards got very angry. I felt for you just reading it. We have done our homework like you (we don't do tipping in the UK) and as a result took loads of dollar bills with us for our Celebrity cruises to use as appropriate ----- alongside the pre paid gratuities, the extra part of the bill where you can give extra tips if appropriate and then 15% gratuities.

 

We have always been treated with the utmost respect by staff whatever tip we have given.... well to our faces at least !!!!!
