Any idea how RCCL handles unsold premium cabins?s

Recommended Posts

They usually do it first night.

We were in a GS next to RS on Brilliance for a 12 night Mediterranean. They played bingo for it around 10PM. Around midnight they moved in, very noisy.

Here is my issue, I paid pretty good money for my cabin, and had to put up with a lot of excessive noise for over an hour in the wee hours. I guess I could have raised a stink, but I didn't. This was 5 years ago

I do think I told the concierge that in the future, they might think about moving them in the next day, but it was just a comment

They usually do this the second day, not the first night...:D

Maybe they took my suggestion. ;)

I'm sure it varies by ship. My Brilliance story was first night and they did bingo on Oasis first night this past June.

Noticed this morning that the price of a "Suite Guarnetee" was actually lower than the price we paid for a D5 Blacony 15 months ago on our Anthem Cruise in 15 days time ...

Called and asked if any chance of an upgrade, was told "no" and "no chance of paid upgrade at the moment either" and "if any upgrades become available they will be offered to C&A members first of which you are one so keep and eye out for phone calls / emails"

did you book through the UK - if so we just upgraded ours with no problems at all (well except on line we now appear to have 3 rooms and our dates of birtha re wrong lol). In fact we also got it at a cheaper total price. (bit we are a few days away from finial payment)

Yes it was a UK booking. That's excellent news you you and I'm glad they let you upgrade :)

I suspect it's just becuase the sailing is only in 15 days time and they're trying to sell off these cabins now ... maybe I'll get lucky and a visit from the upgrade fairy but I doubt it though

True, but what if in spite of that, there are no takers?

It's harder to upsell JS to crown and anchor members as most of us know there will be no extra points for suites that is acquired via an upsell. Plus JS has no suite perks.

So will RCCL sail with many empty JS cabins? Just want to know if anyone knows what is their policy for this case.

Almost no suite perks. We were given the priority boarding area which helped me get on the ship a few minutes and 100 passengers earlier. That helped when I rushed to Explorations to get one of the available cabanas at Labadee.

BTW, we reserved a d1, had our upgrade preference set to automatic. We showed up at the pier last week and found we were in a Junior Suite. The week before there were none available, so I am making the assumption that two parties with connecting JS canceled at the last minute.

I have not seen any posts recently about the new 'upsell' policy that was supposed to take effect on March 16th. They were supposed to send emails with upsell offers at 45 days out to agents and passengers.

I think I'm 45 days out today, but I booked direct. Not sure how that fits in.

If you are upgraded to JS from D1, do you pay suite level gratuities of $14.25/day ? Or standard gratuities of $12/day?

I agree with both above and posted on one of those previous upgrade threads that the fairy was gone... she's now the "Upsell Fairy". However there's been different other threads recently of upgrades with no extra upsell.

I agree with both above... About 25 days out from my recent March Legend cruise, I was offered an upsell from my J interior to any balcony of my choice. She didn't even finish her sentence and I was asking which cabins were available :D She told me this was a C&A upgrade and they were going down the list. Two other D+'ers I met on board close C&A points to me also were called and took the offer, and another D+ couple I hung out all week with refused an upgrade to an aft because they valued their midship cabin (due to motion sickness). They were releasing less expensive interiors for the GGG Tuesday sales and I guess it was apparent they weren't selling the premium cabins... that's how I saw it. Plus I think there were only 2 NS on board, and other high C&A above me already had suites and balconies they already wanted, so it got down to me :D:D:D

If you're on a popular sailing selling out well, I think your upgrade/upsell chances are zero. If you're on a sailing that may attract many high level C&A cruisers, again I feel chances of upgrade/upsell close to zero depending on how many points you have compared to those sailing with you. If you already book a suite or balcony, again I feel your chances are minimal as there are only so many GS's etc to upsell to the many JS's and balconies.

the following is an explanation of an earlier comment made by me about 'quiet', 'secret' cruise deals.

(the types the cruise lines don't want everyone knowing about)

http://www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?ID=1129

'One-Off, Unpublishable Rates'(and what the article said)

'Look for agencies that advertise themselves as "preferred" sellers of various cruise lines -- that means, the agencies sell a high volume of those line's cruises and have good relationships with the lines, so the lines are more likely to offer them these deals, knowing they can sell them. And when you see a message to "call for low rates," definitely call. True, sometimes it's just a gimmick, but occasionally you may stumble upon a deal that's so good, it can't be advertised. And if you cruise a lot, establish a relationship with a travel agent. If you're loyal to them and they know your vacation preferences, they'll be more likely to come to you when they see a great deal.'

And yes we have received these types of last minute calls/emails because we live in Florida, and are able to go with a couple days notice if we wish.:)

The only last minute calls we've gotten from RCL directly(not counting upgrades) that we felt were good deals came from the Casino Club.

Happy Cruising:)

Do you recall how close to sail date you received the notification.

It was about three weeks if I remember correctly. It was a mass e-mail that C&A members got to upgrade from a balcony to a JS on many different ships. It was a great deal for me, as a solo it only cost me $200, some people paid even less. They advertised it as a half price JS upgrade.

So they're just calling the last minute price drop an upsell now...

RCL is still slashing prices. At least they did for the Navigator sailing out of Galveston this Sunday. Take a look a cruise fish dot net. Search any cruise, using a close date and then click on the price for the cabins and a price line graph will pop up showing the history. The Navigator for example, a JS started around $1200, hit about $2300, then drastically dropped back down to $1200 and for a few days, hit $1,000.

If you are not at final payment date yet then it is not last minute price drop:rolleyes: last minute pricing is normally cruises within a couple of weeks at most.

It is not unusual for TA's to have an earlier final payment date as they need to receive and clear funds and then get those funds to RC by their final payment date.

Actually, any decent TA just runs your credit card with payment to Royal Caribbean. No "clearing funds" time necessary.

If they are running your payment through themselves, they are sleazy.

If a TA wants payment before true final payment time, it's to be sure that you actually follow through with payment. Some people forget and/or are unavailable at actual payment date.

:)

True that. Many credit cards are declined for one reason or another. TAs that don't pad extra days onto final payment are doomed to grow more gray hairs....

I have a question, how come a lot of JS and GS got released one week before sailing date?

It's unlikely that a big group booked in suites cancelled? But it is already non refundable so near to the sailing date for them to cancel.

A TA is unlikely holding them, because they should released all the cabins to RCCL before the final date.

So where does this suites came from out of the blue?

That is exactly why ours sets it early, just in case there are any hiccups. :)
