Glad to see this. We're doing the Eclipse transatlantic, followed by the Fjords and as such will be taking hiking boots and poles to do some hiking at Geiranger and Flam. Thought we'd have to book another case for the transatlantic flight at a cost of $100. Now my husband doesn't need a tux or suit, we probably won't need the extra case. Does anyone know if the button down shirt quoted on X website needs to be long sleeved or will a short sleeve button down shirt do. My clothing won't change all that much. I've stopped wearing long dresses on cruises now and have noticed less and less tuxes on Celebrity over the last few years. My husband stood out as one of the few with a tux on our Summit cruise two years ago and on last years transatlantic there was quite a variety of clothing on formal nights all of which looked quite appropriate to me. As said on other posts, people who really want to dress up can and others without suit, tux or jacket won't feel out of place.

Web site just states that shirt must have sleeves - :)

How many of the folks who are vehemently opposed to this change are also those who complain of earsplitting music at the (fill in the bar/venue blank)?

Is it possible that the same demographic who complain about both are the most vocal complainers onboard and the least likely to be pleased with their cruise?

As a business owner, would that impact your marketing? As an employee who would you rather they market that product? The business I am in specifically targets the non-complainer group because they are the least adverse to our profitability.

I don't think there is the slightest correlation. I'm against this but have honestly never complained about one single thing on any cruise. I know people that complain about anything, I don't see anything in the way they dress that plays a part in that. I guess you have the traditionalists like me and my wife still only in our 40/50s who loved everything about cruising 20 years ago and are sick of one standard after another being watered down and others who are either newer to cruising or not really interested in the traditions. It's all about profits, packing more and more people into mega ships, and up selling. But hey I know that's how it's going and nothing will change that. Just think it's sad when even on here you have someone post something that's very fair and a reply is a snide " ta ta" sort of sums a lot up for me.

We were eagerly awaiting booking our next Celebrity cruise in the next month or so ---------- forget it now. Very disappointed. If I wanted jeans and a nice top I would eat at the local Brewers Fayre (not sure what that is in the US)

Celebrity - used to be special, now just average and expensive for the experience (or lack of).

Groan

Would be very angry if we had booked a while back to find that the dress code was different.

Looks like we will stick to P&O or Cunard ----

Or we could try Oceania. If we are going to have the semi formal experience we would want the best.

But why oh why would you change lines just because dress codes change? It is your vacation - wear the tux/formal - indulge yourself -

JUST DON'T LOOK DOWN YOUR NOSE THAT OTHERS DON'T dress like you

Celebrity is out of the price range of the 'people' that you are 'talking' about - those below you and your standards -

Chill enjoy life!

After scrolling through all these posts, and DH saying he is still taking his tux even though he owns a purple shirt, I think Celebrity & Celebrity Cruise official poster needs to step up and clarify a lot of issues involved, but not said, with this announcement.

I do not understand those people who claim they will stop cruising on Celebrity or other lines because formal night has changed.

Formal night takes up such a very little percentage of the typical waking time on a cruise vacation. Surely formal night is not the only attribute that draws someone to Celebrity. If formal evenings were that critical one would think that those cruisers would be stuck like glue to a cruise line like Cunard.

An excellent posting. This is just part of a bigger picture and everything you mention is part of that. You could add the constant up- selling and the dropping of food standards. It's all about attracting as many people as possible including some who don't care about a top notch product at a cheaper price. You then push everything when you have them on board to up the profits. Dressing up puts many people off so let's just not bother with it when we can make more money.

Celebrity could do away with all those changes you are unhappy about, but then the cost of booking a cruise would sky rocket, the ships would sail half empty as the passengers run in droves to other lines and Celebrity would cease to operate.

C'mon, we all know what "designer" jeans are, and if you don't know if yours are, they aren't.

If Kusadasi is on your itinerary, you can pick up a case load for $20 :p :D. You can't tell the difference unless you look real closely, and if you're that close, you'd better duck :D.

Kenevenpar,

The flirty dress was obviously too flirty, that's why it's been removed !

I sail on many lines that don't have formal nights. I love it. Vacation is about being comfortable. Love azamara, Oceania, Windstar, Viking... No formal nights. Now I can be more comfortable on Celebrity too. Leaving the "formal attire" home is truly modern luxury. Less clothes to pack is fantastic. Thank you Celebrity. Now that is true Modern Luxury. My spouse is very happy too.

See you get it! Everybody can dress NICELY however they want - I am sure thy will still have class - just their own class! :)

First, they have to make the move, then to enjoy the total Cunard experience, and then stick like glue to Cunard ;)

This is just the beginning :D

Flirty dress not removed, its only several pages back, right after the "skanky" dress...(I believe it's Kors, Bloomingdale's, but to our refined Celebrity crowd, "skanky").... SMH at the judgement mentality here.....

I am not pleased with these changes, but I am also a creature of habit and was perfectly happy the way things were. I still am of the belief that Celebrity is leaning towards the professional middle class, health conscious , active, intellectual, electronic savvy customer. This will maintain their "Luxury" status. Elegance and charm is gone, glass and brass seems to have regained popularity. Will get my turn to experience the changes in June 2016 when we will be on Summit again. Until then will read the reviews with bated breath!

Sorry that was too strong for you. It was meant to say goodbye to one who is going on a fabulous Seabourn 24 day cruise with his tux and we are stuck with Celebrity that is "morfing into Carnival".

He stated he was "moving on". I am impressed.

Evening chic nights will be offered twice on sailings of seven nights or longer. They will roll out to the fleet, except onboard Celebrity Xpedition, on all sailings beginning on or after December 4.

Cruising Saturday, November 28th out of San Juan. Formal or not????

This is a real laugh. Just drop all the pretense that there will be anything Chic about this. I can't wait to see what some ideas about being glamorous and sophisticated "in our own way" will be.

No matter what the dress code is, Joanie, you always look fantastic:)

Just do a quick GOOGLE search for 'designer jeans' and hit the images tag. Probably 75 to 80 percent of the "designer jeans" pictured may be termed "chic" by some but to me look pretty sloppy no matter what is embroidered on the back pockets.

If the new wiz kid Ms. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo and the rest of her think tank idea men and women behind this entire "Evening Chic Evolutions" baloney decided on this, using the same claimed "EXTENSIVE RESEARCH" that they did with the entire Royal Caribbean Dynamic Dining concept it might have been better to start it off on only a few ships or itineraries as a trial.

Ship travel was the main method of transportation until air travel grew and took its place. Cruising then became something else, maybe an acquired taste for some but for sure not just a way to get from point A to point B. It was special. A type of holiday in itself and in some cases a restorative or treatment for those in need of relaxation.

We live in an amazing world today, a world filled with so many choices so different than even a few scant years ago. Just think back to when a tomato in January came only in a can or a cell phone was the size of a now almost extinct telephone book. When we want to enjoy our time off from work (or with computers work while on vacation) we can fly to Vegas, New York, Paris any number of exotic places. We can choose to stay at all inclusive venues ranging from secluded to outrageously uninhibited, from Michelin rated places to some that enjoy the fact they don't rate at all. We can choose between Disney-Dolly-Universal-Busch or any number of fabulous amusement theme parks. We can zip line trough any number of jungles or rain forests, dangle from Vegas skyscrapers or on see through decks over the Grand Canyon.

Although I have only been cruising for the last 15-16 years I feel like I may be a dying breed in that I enjoy the occasional jacket and tie evening and if I don't I am willing to enjoy an evening in the buffet or one of the other venues available. I enjoy eating quality meals in the MDR and still enjoy an evening or two at a specialty restaurant.

Amazing but I remember when the distance between tables on the smaller ships compared the new BIGGER ships was more than 4 inches from each other if that. I enjoy an evening stroll on an old fashioned promenade deck where you can spend an hour or two in peaceful conversation or simple relaxation watching the sea roll by. It was nice to visit a port when the number of visitors didn't outnumber the port's actual population. Why are all the staterooms the same size other than the actual suites? After six cruises with butlers (not knocking them they have been great for the most part) I would love to have the opportunity to pay more for the extra room of a larger cabin and veranda but do not need the services of a butler or the much higher prices the suites now demand.

I can't help but feel there is still room for traditionalists like me who were satisfied with what Celebrity provided in the past and want the same for the future without bowling alleys, rock walls, zip lines, pink bears, Giraffes, bumper cars or any of the other things the MEGA ships are competing with each other to provide. Like those who argue they do not want alcohol beverage packages made part of the standard fare because they do not want to pay for others who drink when they don't, I do not want to pay for anything other than a well kept ship, excellent service, excellent food, some variety in cabin size, decent entertainment and a comfortable casino.

Moneywise I am still sticking with Celebrity but if this new trend in becoming more and more "CHIC" starts to erode the Celebrity experience I will have to look for alternatives which I am sure will cost more in the end. I hope I do not have to make that decision.

I agree on a 10 day cruise formal night is only may 8 hours out of the entire cruise? Dress up every night - wear that tux/formal whenever you want - just don't look down on those that choose not to conform to your standards!

And people think an extra checked bag is too costly, wait until they go to buy their designer jeans :D;)

Not going to bother. just going to cut holes in the knees of the ones I've got. I'll just wear a longer top so jeans label won't be seen. Me being a canny scot.
