First time to Hawaii. Want to experience Pearl Harbor without high cost of ship excursion. Sailing on carnival miracle JAN 16 2016. In Honolulu JAN 22 and was thinking of a taxi from ship to Pearl Harbor. Any advice on use of taxi and Arizona and/or Missouri tickets. Thanks

If you come over to the Hawaii portion of Cruise Critic, here:

You will see lots of info on Pearl Harbor, how to get there, booking your Arizona tickets in advance, things to do at the Missouri, etc. Tons of info there.

Things may have changed however did a ship's excursion several years ago and thought it was well worth it. This was with RC. When our bus arrived we had tickets for the group at a set time - well organized. People arriving individually were upset to find how long the wait for tickets to the memorial was - over 4 hours. This was a regular day, not a holiday, and in November. Not sure if it still works the same. We were able to do the Arizona and Missouri and a tour of the island and were very happy.

you absolutely need to set up ahead of time. especially for the Arizona and Mighty Mo.

we used a company called 'home of the brave' as they offered access to the Pineapple Pentagon on base. and yes the bullet holes were left intact.

we saw the Arizona, Punchbowl, The base( limited access there of course) and finished off at their own museum.

MISSOURI and the Sub were doable on your own if you wanted.

You can reserve tickets 6 months in advance and they go very quickly. For January 2016 I'm sure they are long gone. There are a certain number of walk up tickets available. They are on a first come, first served basis, and you could have a long wait for the boat to the memorial. Go to the National Park Service website to see if there are any advanced tickets still available. If you have time you should also visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the Punchbowl, very beautiful, very peaceful.

Home of the Brave is exceptional.

I highly recommend them.

Since OP has not reserved tickets this close to the date , best bet may still be booking this tour with the cruise line , if the even have any tour available .

Would assure you of getting back to the ship if delays are encountered in line or enroute .

We visited Hawaii prior to a cruise. We had booked a private excursion for Pearl Harbour months in advance. There were people in our hotel on 'wait lists' with the conceirge desk for cancellations. Another couple had queued for four hours...

If you cannot book anything yourself on line now I suggest you pre book with your cruise ship or you could find when you board that the ship excursion is fully booked.

Advance purchase is the only way to go...and correct, today is the anniversary. We were there on a land vacation several years ago (summer). There were several survivors there speaking to anyone who would listen. It was very nice to see kids...all ages...listening intently to the stories they were telling and what they remembered from that day.

When on the Arizona there was one survivor of it that rode out with us. It was a struggle to not join him as he stared at the list of names with tears rolling down his cheeks.

On our trip to Pearl Harbor almost 10 years ago, survivors greeted every single person who entered! I was so touched by these old (in their 80s) gentlemen shaking hands and thanking everyone who passed by when we should have been thanking them, which everyone did. There were few dry eyes among the thousands of tourists even before getting to the Arizona Memorial.

I used this Company in 2012 and agree; they provide a great tour experience.

One really needs 2 days to truly appreciate all that the National Park Service provides at Pearl Harbor. The Bowfin and its Museum is worth the time and certainly a visit, not rushed, at USS Missouri is worth the effort.

(Hint if visiting the Missouri: Prices at the gift shop where the Missouri is docked are higher than the same items cost at the gift shop at Pearl Harbor.)
