No more cash from Casino Teller

Recommended Posts

Just throwing in something new. Im going on my first cruise on Explorer and we are in Australia. My husband is an avid gambler and will be in the casino a bit. Do I need USA dollars for him to use or can we use our sea pass card. OR is there an ATM on board to get more USA dollars. I just don't want to take too much cash and it not used or the other side run out of cash and have a sad husband..

You cannot use the SeaPass card directly. To play machines, you must have USD. You can get cash from the casino cashier, charged to your SeaPass card for a 5% fee. You can also use an ATM onboard.

Have no idea why they are changing their OBC policy in the casino.

Oh that's an easy one to figure out. I can see a day when the policy will be you only get back cash on your OBC when you close your account out. That way they ensure that whatever OBC you put on your account will be 100% spent on the ship. I will be the first to say, when that day happens, my cruising days with RCI will be over. There's plenty that they do right now that I don't agree with but I can live with most of it. But telling me how I spend my money is crossing the line and I won't be tricked into spending my money on something I don't want to spend it on.

I think they are also working on trying to figure out a way to really make the non-refundable OBC non-refundable (As in it won't even be available for taking out at the casino)

Earlier this year there were posts from people that had written on their cruise docs that there OBC could NOT be used in the casino. That turned out not to be true. I don't know if the cruise docs still have that on them.

What if you have no onboard credit? You still cannot take money from the casino?

Often we are walking around the ship (without carrying cash) and stop in the casino and decide to play. We would just get cash from the teller, which is billed to our sea pass. Sounds like we can no longer do that.

That could hurt the casino, since I don't feel like going back to the cabin, go in the safe, get money and come back. I would just not play. So they are discouraging playing, in a way.

Since it hasn't happened, I don't see an issue. If and when it happens, that would be the time to reconsider.

You can still charge it back to your on board account. Don't worry, they will take your money and smile while they do it.

OBC isn't your money. It's a credit to spend on board. On. Board. Credit.

It's your credit, not your money.

That may be the case for non-refundable OBC that the cruiseline provides but if you or your TA have paid for refundable OBC, it is your money not the cruiseline's that has gotten it. :D

Today I got refundable OBC from guest services on Liberty. They were quite happy to do so, thus no need to pay 5% at the casino.

Good one. I think it all may depend on the type of OBC (refundable), the amount of OBC, the timing of when asked (at the end of the cruise) and also on the particular staff member.:D

Currently on board Majesty. Had no issue at all last night going to casino cashier and withdrawing $400 cash from the obc we had purchased. We had set up a cash account with the obc so no service charge. Have a few hundred more to withdraw today.

On the Vision now. Had no problems withdrawing the non-refundable OBC from the Casino without paying the 5% since we had a cash account instead of a credit card account. The TA's OBC is refundable but can not be withdrawn from GS until the last day. Of course, I could pull it out today from the Casino.

I believe the ticket thing on the Jewel is specific to that ship only and was done by the Revenue and Marketing Manager, who is responsible for the Casino revenue.

Interesting, do you think it is a pilot programme to see if it would work fleet wide?

I am just off the Anthem 12 day sailing, and you received ticket vouchers there as well. The cashier stated that it was a new program (about 2 weeks).

I believe it will be moving fleet wide eventually.

Does anyone know if non-refundable OBC can be used for the deposit on a new booking while on board?

I don't know, but they have always charged a credit card when we make a new booking. They have access to the one that's linked to your onboard account, but it's always a separate charge. I asked a few years ago about putting on our account and the LA said they couldn't do it that way. My guess is that it's a separate accounting system from the ship's. But it's only a guess.:)

So, if you are given a voucher by the cashier, can't you just go to the cash out machines that take vouchers and turn them into cash?? Seems like that would be the best route to go. We were just on Oasis, and they had these machines near the steps to the elevators, near one of the ATMs. We cashed out our slot vouchers there whenever the lines were long at the cashier.

Yes that's what people have been doing. I guess RCL is hoping that most will not think of that

I suppose you could also put the voucher in a slot machine and immediately cash out and bring the new voucher to the cashier and redeem it for cash. There is almost always more than one way to skin a cat.:)

  • 2 weeks later...

I received an email today, with many details about my reservation on The Oasis, February 6-13, 2016. Under Onboard Guest Credit, it lists the $300 in OBC that I was awarded when I made the reservation onboard last February, as well as another $100 OBC that I "bought" with Royal Caribbean VISA bonus points.

Above the accounting, it states:

Royal Caribbean will post the credit(s) to your onboard account on the 2nd day of your cruise.

Below the accounting, it states:

Please note, this onboard credit is subject to ship staff validation, and cannot be used in the casino, nor can it be converted to cash. It must be used by the end of the cruise or surrendered.

I can understand that RC would much rather I spend it in the shops, or up-sell restaurants, or excursions. Are they really sticking to the above restriction? If so, that would eliminate being able to get a voucher (or whatever it is called) to be used in the casino, and then cashing it in at some sort of machine as you leave the casino.

If they enforce this, I will be very disappointed. :( I had counted on cashing in the OBC to cover part of the cost of our airfare and pre-cruise hotel, as well as having cash to hand out to some staff members on the last day.
