Cleaning your cabin when boarding.

My husband and I do wipe down doors, remotes, bathrooms, and closets etc. I also have a small UV sanitizing wand that my daughter gave me one Christmas, kills any bugs hiding on the mattress or pillows. I know I'm OCD, but I've never been sick on a cruise either. Just want to be safe, besides it only takes a few minutes to do.:)

I don't do it for cold and flu germs, but because I don't want someone's pee or poop on my hands, or their private parts that they touch to use the restroom (men) ending up being on my hands when I go brush my teeth. The thought of that to me, is super gross. People touch all sorts of things that are gross on themselves (or other people) behind closed doors and I just don't want to be touching them. I do agree though that we probably overuse the anti microbial stuff, but I don't want someone else's private part germs on my hands, so in a hotel, I am fine with overusing the cleaners.

For those that do all these things in their cabin, I'm curious what you do about all of the things OUTSIDE of your cabin that you touch. Things like elevator buttons, tongs, menus, chair armrests, the pen that the drink waiter hands you to sign your receipt, your sea pass card after the drink waiter has touched it, the receipt itself, bathroom door handles, plates and eating utensils handed to you by your waiter or placed out by workers in the Windjammer, casino chips, slot machine buttons, stair railings, etc.

I would strongly suggest that you never eat food that you did not cook personally every again. Remember you have germs, I do not!

Yeah I know. Kitchens are disgusting, but there's no way around that on the ship. So I clean what I can in my room because I have access to that. I'm not a germaphobe, I know there are gross things elsewhere, and that isn't gonna kill me, but why leave them there if I can clean them? Do you want someone's bodily fluids all over your hands when you reach for the remote? I don't.

I don't care about those things. I can wash my hands before I eat or put my hands near my eyes or mouth, knowing that those things are dirty, but if it's in the room, I clean it because that reduces the amount of time I have to wash my hands when I want to relax or get ready for the day, and because I do things in my room to clean myself up where I put my hands on my face (to wash, to put on makeup), in my mouth (to brush and floss) etc, and I'd rather not have to set my toothbrush or my eyelash curler on someone's pee germs, or have some random man's private parts (or the stuff that comes out of that) all over my stuff. Sorry to be gross but I don't know why that doesn't cross some people's minds, or have you not seen what couples do in rooms on vacation? Lol.

That is the problem with Boardwalk, Central Park, and Promenade cabins. Too many people are watching what is going on in the cabins across the way!:eek::D:D

I just don't worry about all of that. If I did, I wouldn't ever stay in a hotel room, where I share mattresses and pillows with hundreds of other people.

Well....at least those are covered up. You're right though, there are plenty more gross things in there that can't be cleaned.

I bring Clorox wipes & wipe down things in the room I think someone might have gotten gross or that I might touch & then touch my face like the remote, phone, door handles, light switches. I might be paranoid but I'm convinced that if I don't that I'll be touching someone's boogers or ️ sweat & I just can't deal with that!!! [emoji40] And yes I sanitize my hands before eating in the Windjammer, MDR & everywhere else. And no I'm hardly ever sick [emoji16]

I bring large can of Lysol & everything is sprayed the toilet seat & handle -the shower -all door knobs -light switches -drawers are open & interiors are sprayed --all handles --tables --mattress (sides) --sofa -tables -chairs/tables on balcony -& especially the remote -that gets cleaned & placed in a sandwich bag ---reports have indicated remotes are the filthiest things in hotels -little anal I know -but flu viruses -probably noro & who knows what else [emoji41]

Never cleaned any cabin (or hotel room) and have never gotten sick on a cruise. DH has caught a couple of colds (from cruisers who later admitted after shaking hands that they had a cold). We just wash our hands.

I bring antiseptic wipes and go over the obvious...phone, remote, door handles, faucets, tables and the inside of the drawers. It takes less than two minutes.I use a tip I found on here YEARS ago and it works great. I put most of my clothes in zip lock bags of various sizes (some the 3 gal size) and then I can just toss them in the clean drawers. The rest are in dry cleaning bags that hang up. This means unpacking is a breeze and also takes about two minutes. I even put my shoes in the 3 gal bags. I put my passport, extra meds, electronics in a zip-lock in the safe. Easy to grab it at the end of the cruise and not leave something in the dark safe. I've spent about 15 minutes to get the cabin clean, clothes unpacked and I'm ready to head up to the pool deck for a drink and I don't have to worry about anything else for the rest of my cruise. As I accumulate dirty clothes, I put them in the zip locks, mark the outside with a big X with a sharpie and toss them in the suitcase under the bed. On the last day/night of the cruise, while everyone is scurrying around to pack and lay everything out, my bag practically packed. I put the things I didn't wear, along with a swimsuit that might still be damp in the zip locks or dry cleaning bag and I'm ready to enjoy my last night on the ship with no rush. We always leave the cabin tidy and nothing really has to be done other than replacing the towels and washcloths and emptying the trash can. No worries for me or the steward.

Some of us use packing cubes for packing and for use in drawers. We spend maybe 15 minutes hanging up what needs to be hung up and putting cubes in drawers, but we still don't wipe down everything.

funny

The US Public Health Service finally realized that pepper grinders sit on dining tables for many months, and are handled by hundreds of healthy and sick passengers without being properly sanitized.

Then they realized that it is basically impossible to properly sanitize a pepper grinder.

So instead they have instructed the cruise lines to remove them in order to risk cross contamination.

USPH still has not noticed that salt and pepper shakers usually sit on the tables for many months without being properly cleaned.

Every day or so, the waiters top them off, leaving the same very old contents in the bottom.

Do the waiter wear gloves when handling the shakers and contents?

No.

How many people have sneezed, coughed, or vomited on or near those things?

How many children played with them and put them in their mouths?

How many times were they dropped onto the floor and then placed back on the table?

You can spray your cabin with bleach and wear a hazmat suit to dinner - but using these salt and pepper dispensers will dramatically increase your chances of getting sick.
