ID/Key Card demagnetized?

I did a search and found a couple mentions of the card not working after being demagnetized.

Any firsthand experiences with this, or any warnings at check-in about keeping it away from your cell phone?

I've had problems with this at hotels but only receive information after the fact.

Yep- happened to me. I have a magnet on my phone case. PSD will give you a new one, no problem. After that, I carried my phone in my right front pocket (so i didn't sit on it:eek:) and my card on a long lanyard in my left rear, as far apart from each other as possible. After that, no problem.

Has happened to us a few times. Never with our iPhones. But always with our iPad cases. We have the smart case things with the magnet. Not paying attention, I would hold my iPad and cruise card in the same hand. Low and behold it would deactivate.

The pursers desk will replace very easily. One cruise a few years ago it happened to me 3 times. After the third time, I made a point to keep my iPad in one hand and my cruise card very very far away. Hasn't happened again.

Get a small rfid card holder for your cruise card. I used to have the problem several times per cruise but not since I got the small card holder.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Thanks for this suggestion it will come in handy.

My card goes on me a couple of times each cruise and I have better things to do then to line up at passenger services.

My kindle I think is the cause and maybe my camera on shore days.

The slot machines can kill room access. Last cruise had to have the card remade five times, some of these multiple visits to the front desk. Last time they sent a staff member back to the cabin with us. Of course it worked that time.

Happened to me when I was in my Pj's and barefoot, around midnight, my DD and her best friend in the room a couple of cabins down from me wanted to chit chat in their cabin and when I finally went back to my cabin, the card would not work, luckily, they went to Guest services for me to get a new card.

I have not seen any warnings at check in or other times. My story was that I had gone down to the retail shops to buy a ship magnet for our cabin wall and later the refrigerator at home. Not thinking I put it in my pocket which also held my cruise card. I realized it quickly afterward and took the card out of the pocket but of course it only takes a fraction of a second to de-magnetize the card. Went to my stateroom and it would not work so back down to PSD and get a new one. Having worked in IT I knew better but still messed up.

Partner has to have her cruise card replaced at least once per cruise. I have never figured out how she does it.

Back in years past we had to back up our computers daily (sometimes more) onto large reels of tape and store the tape in a special room. Disgruntled employees about to be fired would sneak into the room with a strong magnet and demagnetize the tapes before being caught. They finally got smart and had a security officer watching the employee as they cleaned out their desks and left the building.

Hey, after the second fail, my wife figure her problem out. Seems that she was hanging her magnetic clip-on sunglasses on the lanyard around her neck - right near the card. Those magnets on the sunglasses are so tiny you don't even think about them. After that, no problems.

I had my card demagnetized at least 7 times on my 15 day cruise. My card didn't work when I got on the ship. After the 5 time my husband carried my card and it still happened 2 times. The only difference between our cards was that I used mine in the casino.

After we put our belongings away in our cabin we head to the passenger desk to get our cards punched.

On our last cruise, we were told to keep our cards away from our cell phones as they will demagnetize them.

Thanks for the reminder!! No problems and even went to the casino several times.

My Kindle or it's case killed my card. PSD messed up the programming on the replacement card somehow such that the card worked in the cabin door but the barcode on the back for embarkation/disembarkation wasn't programmed. Luckily I still had the original card with me so I could get off/on the ship. Back to PSD for another card.

Whenever we have seen people who's card doesn't work I have assumed they must have had it near a magnet to cause the problem. But on our last cruise 48 nights), both my husband's and my cards became inoperable several times and both at the same time. He carries his in his wallet, not near anything with a magnet and I have mine in a folder in my pants pocket - nothing else in the pocket. The fact that every time they both became inoperable at the same time demonstrates that it was not something we were doing. A couple of times a Security officer came and either changed the batteries in the door lock or re-set the lock. This took around a half hour wait then ten minutes' work. Another couple of times, the reception staff re-set the door code and gave us new cards. That was much faster.

Of course, Murphy's Law being what it is, every time this happened either I needed to go to the bathroom, or we needed to go somewhere (meet for a tour etc.)
