RCCL Ships for sale

Recommended Posts

Looks like Rhapsody is for sale. Yachtworld dot com has another (looks like RCCL) ship for sale,1996,but 900 feet long. Anyone have any idea which RCCL ship this might be? Hope it is not the Grandeur,I was on the ship in March, and really liked the ship. Thanks for any answers. Kendra

Recent reports say Maryland law now prohibits the casino and shopping to be open in the Chesapeake Bay, both going down the bay and coming back up to Baltimore. Some also report that the new MGM casino in National Harbor is the cause of this. That's a lot of $$$ for RCCL. Could this be the start of RCCL leaving Baltimore?

Makes sense Rick.

There's been a bit of inflation over the last 20 some odd years so it seems at least that much depreciation has occurred. Also you need to factor in the capital Investments that have occurred during dry docks, which would thereby account for even more depreciation.

It seems that if it cost 300M to build it, and they are selling it for 300M, that beyond the dry dock improvements - not too much depreciation has been taken! I probably would have expected a bit more of a discount but maybe these things have really held their value?

In the context within which we were talking, depreciation "occurs", it is not "taken". And I'm not sure what was unclear about the two considerations I mentioned in the message to which you replied: 20 years of inflation, plus 20 years of capital investment. That's not necessarily trivial. Or are you trying to say something about this ship in particular, that you feel that this ship has not received significant capital Investments over the last 20 years? Or are you implying that the ship has been allowed to degrade and is in ill repair?

I don't know if the ship in the "blurred out" picture is of the ship for sale, but the ship looks like BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS. The central portion looks like the "bridge" that was added when the ship was lengthened (directly under "to" in "details to qualified buyers"), plus it was launched in 1996.

The blurred out picture is Enchantment.

I don't think they make that many capital investments on these ships to warrant the asking price being the same as the original build price. I think they spend most of their funds on operating costs associated with maintaining a capital asset.

Maybe I am wrong and they are doing lots of capital improvements/additions....How many new features does this ship have since it launched? I am thinking there is maybe a restaurant and a scrubber?

Without knowing which ship it is makes that a bit difficult to tell. Assuming it is Grandeur, they just spent $48M on the ship in 2012. They added five new restaurants, a Diamond lounge, a concierge lounge, and a nursery. They wired the ship for wifi throughout and for other interactive services throughout the ship, and I think that was when they added a big screen television over the main pool. Add to that whatever they did a previous dry docks, and we could be talking some serious capital investment.

The reason is that costs for building a ship that size went up from about 200 MUSD to 600 MUSD during the past 20 years. Buying a used one for that amount is a good deal if you compare it to order a new one. Also there is no yard capacity available so you have to wait about 5-10 years until delivery. Queen Elizabeth 2 was built for under 50 MUSD in 1967 and sold for 100 MUSD after over 40 years of service as a (not realized) hotel ship.

Hi all, Thanks for all the responses. I now think it is Grandeur that is up for sale. Year built, and length of ship is about right. Note Brilliance was built in 2002 and is about 962 feet long, and the Enchantment of the Seas was built in 1995 and her length-989 feet( she was extended a while back). Especially the length rules out these two ships. Any other suggestions, let me know, but I am sad to learn the Grandeur of the Seas is probably up for sale. Kendra

For less than $125,000 per person we could chip-in and buy the ship?? I wonder what the on-going maintenance cost would be....

I like this idea! Maybe we could get about 1,000 folks to chip in, and we'd make it like "The World" where we could live on her. Only problem I'd see is I'd hate to think of having to take my turn in the kitchen to cook for everyone! ;)
