iPad stolen from stateroom on Crown Princess

On a recent cruise, we only consumed half a bottle of wine at supper and requested the bottle be delivered to our stateroom to be finished later. When we returned to our stateroom, the bottle was there but our iPad that was being charged had disappeared.

We filed a report with the ship's security but got no further feedback on their investigation.

This spoiled what would otherwise had been an enjoyable cruise.

I guess the lesson learned is never to leave electronic equipment out although some items like laptops don't fit in the safe. I guess the other lesson is never let room service enter your stateroom unless you are there. Still, it is very disheartening not to be able to trust the crew.

Sorry you had this happen.....

How do you know it was a crewmember? What if your steward left the door open while cleaning and a passenger walked in and took it?

We have taken more the 70 cruises in our lifetime. (57 on Princess)

We leave electronics out all the time.

We put cash/wallets/jewelry etc in the safe. Many times we have left the cabin and left the safe wide open.

We have not had any issues.

We have seen a few reports of missing items here on CC over the years.

We still leave cameras/phones etc out.

Guess we will continue to take the chance.

There are quite a few threads here on CC on this topic.

Here is one,

I wouldn't be quick to blame the crew for having taken your ipad. On my most recent cruise I noticed how often the steward will prop open the cabin door while he/she is inside. In this one case, the steward was in the bathroom, with its door open, while the door to the cabin was open and the first thing I thought was how easy it would be for someone walking through the hallway to just simply dart in and out and grab anything that was an easy target. I had been nagging my husband for many a cruise to not leave anything out while we were not there and when he saw what I was talking about, he no longer left anything out to be charged other than when we were already in our cabin for the day/night. The closet for the safe is just within a short arm reach to the cabin door. So many people forget to lock their safes, too. Your bottle of wine might have been delivered during the night turn down for your cabin and he/she had the door propped open?

I am not saying your ipad wasn't taken by the crew, but perhaps there are other possibilities. I also want to say it's truly unfortunate to have this happen during your cruise. I am hopeful you will find an answer.

I've seen that many times as well (I'm sure we all have). Quite often, I've seen a door propped open and no sign of the steward anywhere - bathroom or otherwise - except for the steward's cart in the hallway.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. Thank you for sharing. Regardless of who took it, you were robbed, and your post is a reminder to all of us that it can happen, and we should not let are guard down when it comes to securing our enticing valuables.

I left a small billfold in the lounge. No money. Just 2 coffee cards and a business card. Since the crew probably didn't need the coffee, I assume it was a passenger. Another time I left my I Pad in the casino. They were holding it for me. If you configure the I Pad so that it needs your code if not used within say 10 minutes, its pretty useless for who ever takes it.

Sorry this happened to you. We have often left our iPads and iPhones out on the desk for charging when we leave our cabin. My DH also leaves his camera. Thanks for bringing this to our attention as to what could happen. I too have seen cabin doors propped open while the Steward is cleaning. I like having the feeling of trust but now may be more careful with our electronics when we leave the room. Will you uodate us as to what the resolution is?

We always put iPhones and pads in the safe. Wondering if OP has the find my iPad feature activated. We've caught a lot of culprits in my jurisdiction when that feature was activated. It acts as a GPS tracking device

Do you have the app "find my device" loaded & turned on? If so did that help in locating your device?

I've also been on many cruises & have never left any devices out when I'm not the stateroom.

Really sorry to hear this. I would still follow up with a letter to Princess asking for the status of your claim. I wonder if insurance would cover this? I always tell my DH who loves to leave electronics sitting out in plain sight, "Out of sight, out of mind." It takes 2 seconds to a laptop in a drawer or under the bed.

I'm very sorry this happened to you too. Travel insurance will almost certainly cover your loss, provided you have your original receipt. They may deduct a bit for depreciation though. I've had a couple of lost items reimbursed through Princess Vacatiom Protectiin.

When security took your report, they should have at least have searched the cabins of any crew members who had used their key to enter your room. They should also have followed up with you after that search was completed. I'm surprised you heard nothing back and believe Princess dropped the ball on that.

I usually do lock up my iPad. A few times I have forgotten, and happily my iPad has been OK.

Never had a problem with my binoculars or camera. I try not to leave them out and visible.

I know from work that sometimes visible temptation is too much for some, staff or public. Best wishes, all.

We were certain my husband's iPad had been taken. Were certain where we left it. Called security...........and all that implies. Upon packing to leave, by random chance alone DH found it standing on its edge in the safe (white iPad on a white wall=invisible).

Just saying...............

I hope your trip was otherwise enjoyable.

We charge our devices at night while we are in the cabin. I'm not at all worried about crew but I do worry about passengers and an open door while the steward is trying to do several cabins. When we are gone during the day anything of value is either in the safe or in a drawer where it is out of sight.

There is only so much the steward can do and he/she has too many cabins to take care of so doors do get left open while working. Like I said, I don't worry about crew but do worry about passengers. Sad. The crew has so very little and anybody who can afford to cruise has so much more but those are the ones we have to worry about.

Further information on what Princess Security did. They conducted a full search of our stateroom to make sure we hadn't misplaced it. We were fine with them doing that. If they found it we would have been happy but they didn't. They did search the room of our room steward even though we didn't suspect him and felt bad about that. He didn't have it. They did something to the door lock that I think downloaded all card entries. But then we never heard anything further from Princess about their investigation and we were disappointed with that. We wanted to have some resolution even if they told us they didn't have enough information to resolve the case. We really didn't care that much about the cost of the iPad but we reported it because we thought Princess should know they may have a problem.

Most of the replies to this thread say this doesn't happen.

I think people need to be a little more realistic.

Having cruised fifty times and taken cameras, laptops, netbooks, and iPhones/iPads along and never having had this happened to me, had this happened to me I would be very upset. So the lack of empathy from some despite, or because of, the way blame may or may not have been placed in the original post is concerning.

Princess Cruises should be required to respond one way or another even if, as you have said, there is not enough evidence to resolve the case. If they at least don't come forth with that much to your satisfaction, give them a few more days and call them. Or call them out on Facebook. Nothing gets their attention faster than being called out on Facebook.

Like I said, if this had happen to me I'd be very upset. I'd also have had insurance to cover the loss, either through them or some other way. But at some point this needs to be closed by the cruise line.

I'm sorry his happened to you. Don't let this keep you from trusting the crew. Whether it was one of them or a fellow passenger, trust is not always a factor that is earned. We have to trust those who take care of us, are in charge of aspects of our lives beyond our control, and those who make decisions that affect our lives in more ways than we can count.

This seems reasonable. They should have followed up with you (and still should)

As to the broader topic, Stewards are required to keep the doors open in the room they are working in for safety and security. All other doors are supposed to be closed.

Now, given the number of cabins they have to clean, many Stewards keep multiple doors open and service sections of several cabins at a time (like hitting 3 bathrooms, then 3 beds, etc...) I understand that, but its worth noting that it IS against policy and if it results in thefts (including by opportunistic passngers) that makes Princess liable, should someone choose to pursue it (knowing it will cost the Steward their job most likely)

Yes they will download the lock info.

They will search your cabin and all crew cabins that entered your room. SOP.

However obviously if the door was open and someone walked in then that would not be registered on the lock history.
