November 1 Begins Non-Refundable Deposits in US

We too have used this in the past; we had more difficulty trying to point out the free onboard booking transfer as X did say it wasn’t possible, until I forwarded our TA a copy of the T&Cs I’d asked for when reserving onboard (something I’d definitely advise getting ;)).

It looks like my recent price drop without loss of deposit, was not as lucky as I thought, as I'm elite I did not realise I could change for free, and the uk agent certainly did not inform me of it. He wanted to rebook me , whilst losing my deposit,

If it was an on board booking, you could have moved that FOC to another sailing and then rebooked - remember then you would have had 2 bookings open. You can move and pay the transfer fee (1 free if Elite), but you would lose any perks you got with the initial reservation if you rebooked. You couldn’t stay on the same sailing though using the transfer option and the same booking number.

Andy clarified with the Captains Club. It will be an option applicable to their next promotion, not a policy change. Yet ;)

I also called Captain's Club this afternoon and the rep and her supervisor both said they knew nothing about a change on 11/1 to non-refundable deposits. "Fake News"? :) LuAnn

I got it from my TA, a large online high volume and very reliable agent well known to Celebrity.

The fact that Celebrity reps know nothing about this certainly is not evidence is isn't true.

Sad but true. There have been many times I've explained things to a rep and after they checked they found out I was correct. For example when they reinstated Luggage Valet aboard Eclipse last January the rep told me it wasn't true until I emailed her a copy of the form my friend had emailed me with the date.

A friend reports:

I am on the Silhouette at the moment and asked about this and nobody I repeat nobody in Future Sales knew what I was talking about. I do know that the big shots from Future Sales are at a meeting at the moment and are due back in a few days and then we may know what the true story is. We will keep you updated on what we hear.

If you can live with a variety of cabin types and locations, later booking is the way to go. I can't fault cruise lines for looking tighten up extra/multiple bookings that will be canceled prior to final payment

I am surprised that many do not purchase travel insurance as a possible hedge against having to cancel a cruise. I have never used it, but know of one couple that did and after close to $20k in expenses, I think I will continue to purchase the insurance. I do not buy it for lost luggage, travel delays, etc although if needed I could file a claim, but for medical evacuation.

Now on medicare in US, I need travel health coverage too and looking into that. Any thoughts?

This is an interesting concept for the US.

I am already at the point of booking late, or not going at all. I have a cruise booked with X for Jan 2019, that’s 2 years from the original booking. I won’t be booking in advanced anymore either unless I am 95 % certain I will go. Crap happens, and since I go solo and pay double, a non refundable deposit would be a deal breaker for me.

For those of us in the UK where a deposit is never refundable this is a non story. Our deposits on Celebrity have never been refundable. I suppose it is a cultural thing - in the UK if you put a deposit down it is more or less saying that you ARE going on the holiday. I can't see the point in having one if you aren't planning on the holiday or are likely to cancel ...... makes no sense to me.

BUT that is a cultural thing ... but ... am glad that Celebrity is making it fair for all customers.

Does anyone know if this new rule applies only to bookings made after Nov 1, or does it apply to all bookings, even those made 12 months ago or more, under the old system?

Only applies to new bookings made on or after November 1. I'm sure no one is going to tell you the answer you wish to hear about price drops and re-booking. Cruise lines want to lessen the possibility of those changes for their travel partners. There will be NR non-refundable and RF Refundable rates for those who don't want to take chances with a possible cancellation. Pricing will be increasing as well. Time will tell if it is successful or not.

Totally off topic; go to insuremytrip.com. Compare. I'd be sure to have some Lost Luggage coverage for such things as lost eye glasses, electronics/camera, watch or jewelry, etc. Don't sail without it. Insure your non-refundable portion of your travel expenses. May insurance charge by total per person dollar amount, length of trip on which cruise line/ airline, and your age. We seniors are penalized for our golden years. Make sure to include the dates of any pre-cruise and post cruise arrangements. Ship insurance does not cover that unless you book hotels & air through them and get it included.

"Medicare Advantage Plans" will cover you outside the US. We use "Scan Healthcare" and they offer unlimited coverage anywhere in the world. This is an HMO product which not everyone feels comfortable with as it requires referrals to specialists and a set medical group and hospital. "Geo Blue" is a good medical policy and they offer a 1 year policy if you travel quite a bit. LuAnn
