Grandeur unscheduled stop

Recommended Posts

That kind of detail will be totally lost on someone wanting to get home early and be told they will face a $300 fine if they leave the ship in PC.

No one paid a fine when Liberty had to go to Miami in August on Day 10 of a seven night cruise. , and half the ship disembarked there instead of in Galveston three days later. Was that a different scenario?

If you have trip insurance it will likely pay for the extra nights in Baltimore.

Already checked, will not cover it with the change of departure. We are cancelling the trip and cutting the losses. The $40 airfare is a loss, but figure we would be spending more money to stay for the 3 days and then take a cruise that we are not excited about. We were meeting friends in Charleston and now that won't happen. I would rather put the money into another cruise with an itinerary that would be more enjoyable. I am surprised in all of my years of cruising we have never had this happen! Lucky!

No idea what the scenario was with Liberty, vis a vis whether she could continue on to Galveston or not.

Yes, she could. Nothing wrong with the ship We were just stuck at sea during Harvey, and were running short on provisions and they did let people disembark and leave the cruise in Miami that had a passport, to fly home instead of staying onboard to return to Galveston. Our car was in Galveston so we stayed onboard.

So, yes, as biker said, it was weather related.

We simply cancelled . We will have our money back in 7 to 10 days for our cruise, specialty dining, drink package and shore excursions. No offer of any future cruise credit or discount. Kind of sucks but without any future incentive we will not likely book again with RCCL. There is no shortage of competition out there.

They sort of made their problem ours....

Loss of the use of one rudder would require a one or two tug escort all the way from the mouth of the Chesapeake to the dock. The harbor transit in PC is much less, so the tug charge will be much less.

We were aboard GOS in September of 2006 when a similar rudder issue occurred. We had to stop at the mouth of the bay for divers to check/weld the rudder in place and then we could proceed up the bay with a two tug escort - one on each side. We didn't arrive back in Baltimore until almost 2pm (if memory serves me). While GOS was more than capable of her normal speed up the bay, she had to pace with the tugs:o

As a note regarding PVSA (which I know is not the main topic of the thread) that I just thought of, if the USCG does not allow the Grandeur to sail from PC until further repairs are made, then I think they could terminate the cruise and disembark everyone without a fine.

And crookedhalo, yes, tugs are built for power (pushing/pulling) and are not speed demons.

Our independent insurance didn't cover a similar circumstance either (Summit w/mechanical issues, 1/2 the cruise cancelled). They said as long as the cruise is still going to happen, you do not get compensation for the days you're stuck in a hotel instead of the cruise ship. I was surprised too.

No compensation for the upcoming cruise? Half your cruise fare back is pretty good. At least you could cancel.

I have to agree. Half price on this cruise for the loss of 2 out of 9 days is more than I expected. I had upgraded us to a balcony (still a surprise for my wife) so this is a substantial refund for me. We won't spend more than half of that onboard credit, maybe not even that much, so I expect a few hundred back as a refund post-cruise. Our vacation isn't going to be as long as we thought, but it will be a lot less expensive.

Not to hijack, but I did that, and there is only one official document out there (I don't look at news outlets or Walker's slime for facts), and that is the ATSB preliminary report that I'm already familiar with. That report, to date, has made no conclusions, and nothing in it points to improper management or maintenance as you purport.

Back to RCI issues.

What happens if you miss your flight home because you don't get back to Baltimore when you are supposed to?

We will have to wait and see what considerations the cruise line offers. Usually there is some amount offered for airline change fees, but usually not for the change in airfare.

On our trip GS opened up phones and computers at no charge so that people could call and change flights etc.Only real problem is that the arrival time kept changing... We were kicked out of our cabins at 8:30am and had to find someplace to hang. Food and beverage service was cut off around 10am because our original delayed arrival time was 11am - I know it was between 2 and 3 before we actually arrived. We were lucky that we live in So. Maryland so no travel issues for us BUT I know there were a lot of unhappy people on the ship.

I was already on my way to the Port for a couple of days of sightseeing before our cruise when I got the text message about the delayed boarding. I called Royal and the supervisor said they are paying for the cost of motel rooms for Thursday and Friday and meals for guest who have already left home for the cruise. You have to submit your receipts to royalguestrelations@rccl.com for a full refund. I thought this was really nice of Royal to do this for the guest who were already on their way.

They are reimbursing up to a certain amount?

The supervisor didn't say there was a certain amount they were reimbursing for, all she said was to submit my receipts for my extra cost for the motel and food. The receipts can be faxed or emailed.

Hi everyone! Nearly-new cruiser here (I went on one Carnival cruise out of PC back in 2011 but it was only three nights). I'm going to the GOS cruise that's now scheduled to leave on the 13th. The first email we got from RC was on the 8th and said they were "conducting enhanced sanitation and maintenance as part of our illness prevention efforts," so we were worried about Norovirus. Has there been any illness on the ship? Not trying to spread rumors at all, just want to be prepared!

Also, I read another thread here where people were saying they don't bring their passport off of the ship. When I went on Carnival, we had to show our passports to get back on the ship in Nassau. Is that no longer how it works?

From what has been reported here, "maintenance" seems to be the correct word, not "sanitation". I wouldn't worry.

No passports needed in ports. Just your seapass card plus a photo ID such as a drivers license.
