I need my wifi!!

Recommended Posts

Really?

I guess you don't remember the Duck and Cover drills at school.

Don't remember the Cuban Missile Crisis

Viet Nam war

War protests

1968 National Convention in Chicago

KKK marches

Civil Rights Marches

World leader assassinations

Polio

Only 3 TV channels

Yep, a much simpler time

I could walk anywhere in NYC at any hour of the day or night without fear of being mugged.

Everything you mention above did not effect me personally.

One of the major selling points of a cruise to me is colleagues, clients, solicitors, etc. can not reach me. I use my one free day of internet to catch up on news and check in with family.

I realize many are self-employed and without internet they could not as easily take a vacation and so having internet access to manage their business is an absolute must and the difference between going or not going.

But some are just completely absorbed and can't pick their head up from Facebook on vacation, they live for social media credibility and their entire world exists around it, which I find pathetic.

Pathetic? Wow, this takes rudeness to another level.

It would be more stressful for some of us to not be connected!

Very much this lol, I have elderly parents, very elderly grandparents and pets going into kennels while I’m away. A quick txt or message to tell me everything’s ok allows me to relax.

That said I certainly won’t be on Facebook or other social media as I am when I’m at home.

Though you're likely to see my head buried in my phone while I'm sitting on the sundeck, I'm not using wifi. I preload a bunch of books on my Kindle app before a cruise. A lot more space efficient than stuffing physical books in my suitcase.

I agree, the odds are very high that I am actually reading a book, although I might also might be reading articles from several newspapers I subscribe to or really wasting my time reading Reddit or big smile, the cruise boards :) I can do it all with my phone :)

The only reason we’ll be getting the internet package on our upcoming cruise will be to take advantage of WiFi calling. My grandparents health is starting to decline unfortunately, so keeping in touch is important.

However, checking email (personal & work) as well as social media will not be opened up whatsoever. Sometimes it’s good to disconnect from those for a while.

Some people seem to be taking offence at other people using internet while away, as long as it’s not bothering the people they are with, what does it matter? My mother loves scrolling through Facebook. She has memory problems so no point in her reading a book as she forgets what happens in the last chapter. Scrolling through and seeing photos and chatting to her friends and family (some who live in other countries) relaxes her and make sure her happy. Don’t get me wrong she’s not on it 24/7 but if we had some downtime she would be and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

You go on holiday to do things you enjoy, she enjoys Facebook.

Because the old curmudgeons on this forum love to concern themselves with other people's affairs even though it has no affect on them, whatsoever. You know, typical stuff that old people do. :)

It's a shame that you look at "old people" that way but typical of "some" young people. You may not realize it yet, but you will be there someday yourself. I look back at the way I acted as a no it all when I was young and shake my head.

It's actually kind of a running joke (in my head) regarding these threads. They always, always have the same result. SOME "old people" just cannot fathom why SOME "young people" have to stay connected.

Just do a search, it's the same thing, every time. Eventually you have to get to the point where you just laugh at how ridiculous it all is. :)

Wait a minute I am old as heck and I stay connected. Not all old people fit into your stereo type. I have had a computer since the very first Tandy color computers came out that were 4 K machines and had no hard drive.

Not at all, what happens if that employee is ill, hospitalized or dead? That employee is a single point of failure, and a robust company reduces single points of failure to as few as is possible.

Obviously, there are exceptions primarily medical specialists and people who are self-employed. But in general no person should be so vital to a workplace that they can't drop out of contact for a week.

I am the owner, the buck stops here... I hope that my staff is able to handle everything, I have trained them well but occasionally they have a question that they need direction for. Yes I could say handle it and I will deal with it when I get home but what if it was something that would cost us many thousands of dollars?

It is just easier for them to be able to message me if they need me. They try to not bother me. I probably bother them more checking in with them than them contacting me.

I think this quote could have been used during a discussion about the first telephone ever invented, and why on earth would you want that thing ringing and to be bothering you while at HOME, of all places. Oh, the humanity! :)

Exactly. Just this week my wife complained about my checking traffic on our route with Google Maps. I just looked at her and laughed.

We get the Voom package and AT&T phone package. My husband has an elderly mother and it makes her day to hear from him. I want our house/pet sitter to be able to contact us. We have had the air conditioner go out while we were away and could take care of it with a couple of quick phone calls. When were on Anthem I used my phone to make/change reservations.

I like to use my Kindle to read books, check my email, etc. It is also handy for when your plans change and you need to make last minute changes. The last cruise I was on was a knitting cruise and it was great to look up patterns, yarns and stitches that were mentioned or used.

P.S. I am old as dirt and enjoy using my phone and my tablet. The internet is such a wonderful resource for knitting, spinning and weaving that I would hate to be without it.

How do you do WiFi Calling on Voom. On an I-phone, do you just enable WiFi calling?

Yes, but the first time you enable it, you must be connected to the cell network. So enable it at home first.

It is enabled at home. It's the only way I get decent cell reception at home as we have these Tech-sheild Radiant Barriers in our attic to cut down on the heat. This blocks cell reception but with WiFi enabled, I get great reception.

Then you are all set for WiFI calling over VOOM.

But what if cell phones or the internet didn't exist? You would still be a small business owner, correct? You would give someone back home an emergency number of the cruise line to call if something were to arise, wouldn't you?

small business owner here too. If cell phones and internet didn't exist, would literally shut everything down for a week. Not worth the stress and worry. (Construction company) Now everyone keeps working, getting their hours and work is getting done so deadlines are being met. Fires can be put out from anywhere now while work can continue and customers questions can be answered.

I know a lot of people love to post to Facebook while on a cruise....aren't you worried that it sends a HUGE notice telling everyone you know, "I am not home and won't be all week"? I like posting a few pictures from vacation, but my rule is I do it when I get back home. I don't let my kids post, either.

OK, this is a question I think a lot of people would like to discuss! People now are connected 24x7 to the world. Be it social media or work. It's now too easy to be contacted but in some cases, that's a good thing. I see more and more people on cruises with their face buried in a smart phone or a tablet posting to Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat. To me (maybe I'm getting old.. ugh) a cruise is a time to cut off contact from the world and enjoy a relaxing time in a lounge chair with a drink and letting the stress of your real life melt away for a precious few day.

My question is why do you get the WIFI package and what do you do with it?

Two years ago, we were hooked on Game of Thrones so we felt the NEED to get the voom package on Anthem, and it was fantastic, no issues. But then we got voom on Brilliance - turns out that the European Wifi still is not nearly as effective aas in our part of the world. On Brilliance, it's win or die, and for me, the long waiting line to see the IT guy was a lot of time wasted. Eventually we received a full refund - but that experience on its own has steered us away from anymore wifi needs while away on a cruise. But I agree, the benefit of having a break from all of it is awesome.
