I need my wifi!!

Recommended Posts

For those who have to have access for work; that's not a robust system. If somebody can't go out of contact for a week then there are some serious problems with delegation and authority.

That is an assumption on your part. In my case, as a physician who is highly specialized and one of only 6 in the state (and the only one at my hospital) no one knows my patients as well as me and there is no way for me to delegate that. If a quick text or email can save someone from being unnecessarily hospitalized by the person covering me who probably has never seen that patient before then I'm willing to take 5 minutes out of my vacation to respond. Technically I am not required to be reachable when I'm off but I would be sad if something bad happened to someone because I could not be reached.

Also, the regulatory requirements for the type of program I'm involved with specify that someone with my role must always be available by phone, and right now I'm the only one with that role, so I have to be reachable or the program closes. We have been trying to recruit a second for a year now but it's not easy.

Ironically, many of the folks on this board who are aghast at those of us who get wifi on a cruise are the same people who will freak out if they are told their regular doc that knows their complex case is not reachable. Of course that's another assumption but pretty safe I think.

This seems to be a topic that brings out the "Holier then thou" attitudes. What possible difference does it make if some people want internet and connection and others want to disconnect? No one is forcing people to check their Facebook page!

Personally, I like have access to internet. We usually use our four free days up front, then buy a package for the time left. We have an elderly parent to think about. I normally talk to her every single day at home. Since our cell plan now has wifi calling, the past few cruises I have been able to call her each day. Believe me, it meant the world to her to hear from us each day. We also have kids and grandkids and pets at the sitters. Since I am the type of person who worries about those I love, it gives me peace of mind to be able to check in with them.

If you stop by the Diamond Lounge early in the morning, you will probably see my husband in a corner with his laptop, on a conference call. He get up early anyways, so he grabs his computer and gets in a couple of hours of important meetings before I am even awake. During the day you will see him working on his computer as he writes papers and presentations. It used to bother me that he was working on vacation, but I have come to realize that he enjoys putting together his papers/presentations while looking out at the ocean and the waves. To each his own.

P.S. Funny thing that more people don't get all 'judgey' about those who purchase the alcohol packages! Personally I see those as a huge waste of money. I want to remember my cruise - not muddle through in a drunk haze. Again though - to each his own!

:eek:Hey! I'm over 65 and I've been using electronic devices since the days of the Palm Pilot with its white letters on the dark background. (I'm laughing - not at all insulted ;). I do know people who are proud of their inability to use technology.) The obsession with tech stuff has been around for awhile. I can remember doing WDW when video cameras came out. SO many of the dads missed their entire vacation while looking through the lenses of those things. I can't imagine what their shoulders felt like afterwards - those things were huge!

I take both my phone since I always want to be reachable in an emergency or a need (and before my Dad passed that did happen) and my iPad. Both are loaded with games, books and my very important crochet pattern library. I do get an small internet package and will occasionally post on FB since it's faster than postcards and check email. Mostly I cruise to relax and stare at the water. But my cruisin' companion, my DD, would be lost without it.

I did find it quite useful when I was cruising back to the NY port in a major snowstorm. We found out on our sea day that our flight home was delayed for two days. Thanks to the internet, I was able to snag an excellent deal on a Times Square hotel and DD and I had a great 2 day extension to our vacation. (Note to anyone doing this - try to remember that you have trip insurance and they will reimburse you! Whoops!)

This is a ridiculous assumption.:o

Not at all, what happens if that employee is ill, hospitalized or dead? That employee is a single point of failure, and a robust company reduces single points of failure to as few as is possible.

Obviously, there are exceptions primarily medical specialists and people who are self-employed. But in general no person should be so vital to a workplace that they can't drop out of contact for a week.

It would be more stressful for some of us to not be connected!

True this. I have elderly parents and need to check on them, not to mention my 4 (married) kids & grandkids. Knowing everything is ok with them helps me relax. PLUS if you get wifi when it's on sale, it cheaper than a package from our cell carrier.

You know no one's situation except your own. I'll leave it at that.

I like to be able to check my home security and turn the lights off and on at random times so the house does not appear empty. I also preorder lots of items. If they happen to ship while I am out I can schedule a hold or reroute the package accordingly.

OK, this is a question I think a lot of people would like to discuss! People now are connected 24x7 to the world. Be it social media or work. It's now too easy to be contacted but in some cases, that's a good thing. I see more and more people on cruises with their face buried in a smart phone or a tablet posting to Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat. To me (maybe I'm getting old.. ugh) a cruise is a time to cut off contact from the world and enjoy a relaxing time in a lounge chair with a drink and letting the stress of your real life melt away for a precious few day.

My question is why do you get the WIFI package and what do you do with it?

I do not understand the necessity for wifi or anything else in that realm .I have a flip phone .

I am not on facebook nor do i participate in any other thing like that .I have never used a computer on a cruise .

It seems that retired people on CC don't realize that some of us folks who have to work for a living in 2018 are required to stay connected due to business needs. Maybe one day I can be my own boss, but for now, I need to have internet access in order to travel. So much so that my employer pays for it.

Welcome to the 21st century.

Reading all these posts I guess the most virtuous person in the room has a rotary phone at home as their only means of communication.

I wish I could still have a rotary phone .Life was so much simpler and safer when i was growing up.

Really?

I guess you don't remember the Duck and Cover drills at school.

Don't remember the Cuban Missile Crisis

Viet Nam war

War protests

1968 National Convention in Chicago

KKK marches

Civil Rights Marches

World leader assassinations

Polio

Only 3 TV channels

Yep, a much simpler time

Why does the poster have to "back it up" and why to you?
Why? Why not? This is a thread about why would you get the wifi package and what do you use it for not a thread to tell people they're comments are "ridiculous". That (like your comment) contributes noting to the discussion.

I'm in charge of my mom who has dementia and lives in assisted living. We get 4 days of free WiFi and buy more days if needed. I use it so I can have WiFi calling on my phone. I check 2-3 times a day to see of there are any messages and use it to call Mom a couple times a week. I don't use it other than that but my SO sometimes uses it to stream music. Most of the time we book cruises with friends and will have cabins together on the aft. Jim is in charge of the tunes then.

I am self employed. I must be connected 24/7. When i take a vacation, my clients world cant stop. If I’m not accessible, i would not have business to return to. My clients would simply go elsewhere. Thats what i do with the WiFi pkg.

As far as SM, not my thing. However, people find it relaxing to be connected to a larger world. I for one dont need FB, SC, Instagram. I really don’t care what the Kardashians are doing. I follow nobody and luckily nobody wants to follow me. They would die of boredom.

You might want to read the original post to see what this thread is about before you post your childish tantrums. You make your self look ridiculous and uninformed. Edited by 95south

I don't go on a cruise ship to be bothered by those who do or do not use electronic devices as it does bother you. Again...get a life.

One of the reasons I switched us from Enchantment of the Seas to Oasis as the WIFI is so much better and I need to be in contact. I can even get it on my balcony.

I don't stay on WiFi all the time but I need to be able to send emails etc.
