la_croisiere_s'amuse Posted July 11, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2019 I have a portable box fan that I have taken on multiple cruises on at least three cruise lines. Now a friend of a friend is saying that she had a similar fan confiscated and she's "pretty sure" it was a RCI cruise. That doesn't sound right to me, and according to the FAQ on prohibited items I should be fine, but I thought I'd just check in with the experts. 🙂 Has anyone experienced or heard of this? Clarea Posted July 11, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 11, 2019 Yes, I have seen fans confiscated. Some make it through, I don't know the chances. Your best bet would be to take a battery operated fan.
lovelife Posted July 11, 2019 #3 Share Posted July 11, 2019 I sometimes ask the cabin attendant for a fan for the room and have always been accommodated - with an electric one.
tserface Posted July 12, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2019 You might already know about this one, but we have used on on many cruises and my wife loves it. It's easy to care around. https://www.amazon.com/O2COOL-FD0500400O006AMB-5-Inch-Portable-Black/dp/B001AVMSEY/ref=asc_df_B001AVMSEY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=216585812545&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5412140190718800848&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033125&hvtargid=pla-348570932787&psc=1 Tom
Steven_&_Daniel Posted July 12, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 12, 2019 This may be a stupid question, but how is an electric fan a hazard? I would think every cell phone, laptop, tablet, and maybe even battery operated fan on board would be a greater hazard than an electric fan. Are all electric devices prohibited? Rare Thisguylikestocruise Posted July 13, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 13, 2019 We brought a large box fan on Oasis, and never had any issues. They’re only $20, not a huge loss, if they’re confiscated. I’ll take the risk. Can’t sleep without a fan.
ownedbypets Posted July 13, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 13, 2019 I take two fans. One is electric and the other is battery powered. If they take my electric one I have a back up but they have never confiscated any fan from me.

I personally know of multiple Electric Fan fires, one killed my Father-In-Law. Royal is following threw with banning/confiscating more electronics then in past including all extension cords/power strips. They'd probably ban Computers and such if could but that's never going happen. Edited July 13, 2019 by ONECRUISER

Probably because people bring old, beat up fans with frayed cords. Can’t guarantee that it is UL listed and in good working condition.

PinkLemonade Posted July 13, 2019 #15 Share Posted July 13, 2019 I brought a fan on my last cruise because I heard that the A/C broke on the cruise before mine. It was a small tower fan that could sit on a table and I never had any problems getting it on the ship (Anthem). I kept it in my carry on and it went through the scanners and they said nothing at all.

Rare brillohead Posted July 14, 2019 #18 Share Posted July 14, 2019 I always take a small tabletop fan. Never a problem. I can see why they would prohibit an old fan or one with a frayed cord, but I would challenge them taking a fan in good working order, as they're not prohibited. Even if they confiscate it, you get a claim ticket and can pick it up on your way off the ship at the end of the cruise.
