Am I Crazy? Cheers for 2 only one drinker!

The wife and I drink ALOT on a cruise. I'm never inebriated but I can do a drink an hour from breakfast to when we go to bed. Any more than 15 drinks and I would be a mess.

I guess if you were drinking smaller, but top shelf liquors and shots, perhaps then. Meh, just buy shots for everyone!

I think its asking for trouble. If it were me, I would make it a mission to get to 30 per day and I would end up probably with a big medical bill

The problem with that thinking is that you don't need 15 a day to break even. About 6 per day would do it so 12 a day for 2 packages (which I might be able to do on a sea day but probably not on a port day).

so I have come to the conclusion that I was crazy for considering the cheers package in my situation.

After taking pen to paper I will be purchasing $300 in bar cash (already have 500 in cruise cash for steak house, chef's table and casino) and make sure we have an extra 300 available on a. Card if needed.

Thank you everyone for your response.  I did consider the suggestion to  start each day with 3 Bellinis and go from there.

I would think you can understand there point of view. Not wanting to get ripped off. Must be the same for everyone. My wife does not drink, so we are in the same boat. I get the soda package. If I want a special drink, I buy it. If I want a rum and code. I buy the rum, no need to purchase the rum and coke or whatever. usually you can get buy BOGO for a shot. They give you a big glass for the soda so that is what I buy. A lot less expensive than the rum and coke and twice the size.

I would totally agree with everything you just said and I'm a huge diet coke/rum and diet coke drinker. Now that they have switched to Pepsi would you change your strategy?

BF is a big beer drinker and I don't drink so I've been wondering the same thing.  I do like my Pepsi though... and coffees.  If I had a magic wand, I would get him Cheers and me Bottomless Bubbles.  But it occurs to me - if I *have* to get Cheers, because BF does, can I get Pepsi?  We're going to Alaska on our cruise so me drinking a number of specialty coffees.  (Cruising Tracy Arm Fjord on my balcony with a hot coffee sounds amazing).  It might work.

I have no doubt it would work.

Let's do the math...

Beers are $6.50 + 18% TIP =  $7.67

Drinks are $9.95 + 18% TIP = $11.74

CHEERS price per person is $61.30, per day.

Break-even:   8 beers, or 5 drinks.

Of course beer and drinks can cost more and less than the prices I used, but after perusing all the beer and cocktail menus, most are priced at, or close to, $6.50 and $9.95, respectively.

If you want to pay $800 plus for beer and coffee and Pepsi, go right ahead.

Figuring the cost-effectiveness based on one person drinking 10+ alcoholic drinks per day is a good rule of thumb, but may not be accurate based on your particular situation. Will you be drinking specialty drinks that are higher-priced than usual (The price for the specialty drinks was $12.99 on our cruise earlier this year)? Will either of you be drinking virgin drinks? Figure in the cost of those as well? Same with any other drinks you would have to pay for -  coffees and coffee drinks (Two lattes cost as much as or more than one alcoholic drink) , milkshakes, juices, sodas, bottled water, sports drinks . . . You may actually find that the cost of two cheers packages is warranted.

That's also a lot of calories to ingest just to make it "worth it". If one would drink all of that normally that's one thing, but to drink all of that just to make it "worth it" doesn't make a lot of sense. I think OP's approach in post 31 is the best way to approach it.

Is cheers 61 + 18% or is it 61 including the 18%

The cost for the "Cheers" Beverage Program if purchased PRIOR to the the cruise is $51.95 per person / day, plus a 18% gratuity added on at the time of purchase (total of $61.30 per person / day).

Purchased aboard: $56.95 + 18% -- total price of $67.20

If there is an itinerary where Cheers wouldn't be worth it for most people it's Alaska.

Alaska is very port intensive and people don't stay up late since they are tired from getting up so early and going all day long, and having to get up early the next day.

You'd have to pound them down in a short amount of time to get your moneys worth.

We're doing a 10 Day Alaska.  We will have 6 & 1/2 sea days, so will easily average 5 or more drinks daily without pounding... plus specialty coffee and water.  The CHEERS package is an easy choice for us.

Just buy gift cards and put them on your account ahead of time if you are worrying about a little extra budgeting.  Don't feel like you have to waste money.  Just set money aside.    We won't spend that much because we just don't drink THAT much.  At least we usually don't.

No matter what happens, in your situation you are looking at saving a minuscule amount even if it IS worth it.

If you don't feel well for just one day and aren't drinking, that's shoots the whole deal out the window.

My advice is just forget you ever even heard the word "Cheers" and pay as you go.
