This is an NCL thing or a government thing?  I'm confused as to what you are referring to.

Appreciate more info.  Thanks.

Essentially they have these tablets on tripods with a camera above it set up right after you scan your freestyle card for the last time to get off the ship. It takes a photo of your face and then matches it to your passport. (I'm guessing it might match to your DL if you didn't use a passport, but I used a passport so I have no idea). If it matches you get a green light and then you finish walking off the ship and that was your only interaction with customs.

I know Royal has deployed it in Miami and Port Canaveral as well. I think my friend said MSC has it. It was in Miami for NCL in October, but it wasn't in Port Canaveral in August so I guess it recently got there.

This is a new process used by Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection.  Essentially it only applies to passport holders.  If you used other documents to board, this will not work for you and you will have to go through customs the traditional way.

What happens is this:  People with passports will be in a different line from other document holders.  As you prepare to leave the ship there will be a station you will pass with a special tablet on a pole that will scan your face and if the green light comes on you will have matched to the photo on your passport and therefore you do not have to visit a customs agent and the process is expedited.  For US Citizens, the photo used is then discarded, but for foreign nationals the picture is retained.

Problem in Canaveral aboard the Breakway was not with facial recognition, but the winding pathway up and back down deck 7 just to get to the facial recognition and sign out.   I swear we had had to traverse the length of the ship twice to get to that point.

It is an immigrations and CBP initiative. They compare you image with a stored passport photo. If you don’t travel with a passport, you need to stop and talk with a CBP officer. If you have anything to declare (more than 1 bottle of booze) you  need to stop and talk with a CBP officer.

Canaveral only has one ramp. Not as good for a larger ship. When I was on Breakaway in Miami in October we were down at a smaller terminal and only had one ramp off any had the same issues. I think they normally have 2 for -Away class, only 1 slows the whole thing down.

It is. I experienced this when I sailed the Escape to Canada in September. So much faster!

oh cool its been 3 years since i been to the MCT but i recall walking along the long walkway once i got off the ship. is there some kind of separation for people that have passports so they know who skips customs and doesnt once you get in the building? also im in haven so unsure how this all ties in.

we do carry off so would be great to pass customs as well. super fast to the car

On the Breakaway in October that used facial recognition.  You did have the option to opt out if you didn't wish to use it.  They did have separate lines for US Passport holders and "Other".  Plus there something about Canadians meeting in the MDR for stickers.

I was traveling with a petite person (maybe 5 ft?) and the facial recognition did not work for her - they thought perhaps it was because of the angle they needed to tilt the camera since the tripod itself didn't go up and down.  But she just stopped at the desk that was right between the cameras and was finished almost as quickly as me.

OMG, got off NCL Escape this morning and it was a nightmare.  Our daughter missed her flight it took us literally over 2hrs to get off the ship and we decided to not wait for our color to be called.  The customs cameras were not working and we winded around at least half of deck 7 and went thru the theater then went from the front to the aft again.  It was a NIGHTMARE.  First time on NCL and probably the last.

Curious what time you actually got off the ship? Was it still by 10?

This doesn't appear to be an NCL issue since you clearly indicated the "customs cameras" were not working which meant every passenger had to go through customs.

And you contributed to the crowds by not following the color system....... everyone ignoring the color will undoubtedly cause a bottleneck.

You could've sailed Disney or RCCL and if the custom cameras weren't working....... you'd be declaring you'd never sale them too.

The problem on the Breakaway was they called another color every 5 minutes instead of spacing it out.  We did snake the length of the ship twice to get onto land, was crazy

I wish fellow passengers would just follow the color system and not think it's optional for them. There's plenty of notice of where / when to pick up tags and if there's none left then respect that window and wait for your color.  The poor crew have to deal with people yelling about the lines and they have a system on place that would work if followed. NCL will call all colors because it really doesn't matter since passengers act entitled and do what they want. If your color isn't until later then don't go to the Atrium and wait because that bottlenecks the areas and ties up elevators. NCL cannot win when passengers do what they want.

While I'm at it....... please for the love of sanity..... if you have 2 adults, 4 children under 5, 3 strollers, 7 luggage pieces, 8 pack backs, sippy cups, a bagel and a hot coffee, and your ship cards / IDs in ONE of the back packs but not sure which .... PLEASE UNDERSTAND YOU'RE NOT A CANDIDATE FOR SELF ASSIST!!!

Ugh

We had Gray luggage tags, and they were called at about 9:10 AM (originally scheduled for 9:45 since we had a late flight out).  The entrance to the line was Forward on deck 7, and we passed through the casino area twice before we actually got to the gangway.  By this time all self assist were gone, but the line was still huge.  There should be two gangways into the terminal for 4000 passengers...  not one.  One on each side would have made a big difference. It really wasn't caused by people not obeying their color, but by the lack of gangways in Canaveral at terminal 10.

I posted this last wee but will repost again.

Boarding the Bliss on 11/24 they scanned our passports and used that picture for the key card as well. When I was disembarking I went through the facial recognition but was stopped.  I passed with the green light but the official in charge asked me for a retake. When I did he asked me to remove my eye glasses, which I did. He then allowed me to pass. I did not wear glasses in my passport photo.

Otherwise,  it's a very simple system.

That is not an NCL problem...it is a Customs problem at the port.
