How safe is the safe? Summit specific.

One thing I read awhile back about storing cash in the safe was to store amounts in sealed envelopes with the amount noted.  That wouldn't deter someone from taking the whole thing but would deter someone from just taking a bit thinking nobody would notice.   All that said I don't worry about things in the safe but I'm not storing lots of cash either.

...The only problem we have had, [don't recall which ship], was the location of the safe in the closet; down low or poor lighting of the safe where I had to use a flashlight to see the numbers...

That won't be an issue for the OP on the Summit. The safe is located in the cabinet with glass doors on it above the mini bar.

......  Usually leave a phone sitting out charging, have never traveled with a laptop.  That sounds like work...

LOL!  Or in some cases, it is simply for convenience.

I bring one along on longer cruises because I really dislike having  to use a small screen or keyboard for an extended period of time.

Even bought an iPad with external keyboard (intending for that to be the replacement), but I still prefer to use the laptop.

It is a trade-off each trip.  Is the nuisance of schlepping the laptop around in my carry-on bag worth the convenience of having it along to use on the ship throughout my entire cruise?

If it is going to be a long cruise, for me the answer is YES.

My son just laughs at me.

Most laptops are not that heavy.

Just a tip about the safe in your cabin, we always unlock our safe at night when we are retireing for bed. I case of emergency & lose of light you can grab your valuables & leave the room.

Good idea.  Thanks.

I'm with you.  Small screen/keyboard is a pain.

We've left money, wallets, jewelry, passports and our tablet in the safes and never had a problem (any cruise/cruise line and hotel) except when I screwed up the code.  In which case we had to be there when they came to reset the code.

We have had the safe battery die and couldn't get in the safe.   We learned to remove what we needed at the next port either the night before or early enough, since if you have a tour meeting at 8:30am and try to open the safe at 8:15, there probably won't be enough time for the desk to send someone to your cabin in time.

That's a neat tip, thanks!  My aunt had some money lifted by the movers and had she done this I think it might have helped curb their sticky fingers.

I haven't seen this mentioned in the thread, but another benefit of leaving passports in the safe is that they're easy to find by someone other than you in an emergency.  For example, if security wants to leave your passports with the shore agent in the unlikely event the ship is departing without you.

Always advisable to put valuables in the safe, or at least out of sight - general travel advice!  We just got off HAL Nieuw Statendam and our door was just ever so slightly out of alignment with the door frame - if we didn't close the door with a little extra umphhh the latch didn't click.  We didn't realize it the first day until we opened the balcony door and the door swung open from the pressure change.  Had we not noticed, we'd have been at risk of a common thieving tactic where someone just walks down the hall and gently presses on each door in a hotel looking for doors that aren't latched properly or were left ajar (https://www.cntraveler.com/story/the-secret-world-of-hotel-theft) while someone just ducked down the corner to grab ice/coffee/vending machine run.  If you catch a stranger in your room they just apologize and pretend they went to the wrong room.  I'd rank cruise ships as lower risk than your average hotel, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!

What's your other option if you didn't use the safe?

Have stored several thousand dollars (casino wins) in the safe and never had a problem. My biggest issue is that I always worry that I forgot to actually lock the safe after I go into port. So far, after 25 cruises, I've never come back and found I left it open.

Use the safe all the time with no problem regarding safety.   They are small and most IPads would be difficult to fit inside.

We were on Summit right after dry dock and initially it was difficult to open safe as there is no handle.   You had to get your finger nails under the edge to open.    I wrapped a couple times with my fist and Bingo -   would open nicely after unlocking.   Maybe just a stiff spring.
