Interesting question at Captains Talk on Symphony of the Seas -12/19/2019

Today on Symphony the question came up regarding the retracting if the funnels on Oasis Class ships. 
 

Captain Rob said that yes the funnels do retract and can do so as needed on this class. After the talk I asked him again about it because of the rumors of they being disabled do to the scrubbers. He said that is not the case and in fact on this sailing that had to retract one of the funnels to do some minor repairs. 

I thought some might find this of interest.

I read that there were modifications during the last drydock to enable them to work again. 

 

And I think they retract by tilting

No, they telescope, and from what I'm told, and from what I know of these types of systems, they are a major pain and a constant maintenance black hole, which is why they were left to seize in place after the first year or so, when they weren't going into NYC anymore.

 

As for the scrubbers, it would only be a question of space available for the machinery, not any conflict with the scrubbers, and the retracting mechanism wouldn't be all that much outside the footprint of a "normal" exhaust.  Remember, it's not the "funnel" that retracts, it is just the exhaust pipes that stick up above the funnel.

You're the expert, but I thought I saw a picture of it tilted. It was the fix to accomodate the scrubber. It was in Lloyds Oasis thread

Perhaps they changed it, the originals were telescoping, but a hinged version would be even more of a maintenance nightmare.

You did not appreciate my 8 page thread on "Mating patterns of monarch butterflies in Central Park on Oasis class ships and the direct corellation to tipping habits of guests"?  A lot of research went into that.

I know you have cruised way more than I have and I want to get the cruising time in so I can read and understand your paper on butterflies and tipping.  Tipping is always such a hard thing to understand and all the help I can get on butterflies and tipping is greatly appreciated.  Then again, maybe I just need more time on an O class.

I would be interested in the link to this thread, too.  I've always figured that tipping habits of guests directly correlates to how much they have imbibed hence their walking at a funny angle like those funnels.

Ugg...unfortunately, you are very close to the truth in the case of my first cruise.  The more I drank on the last night, the more the bills flowed.  As for walking at funny angles, I'm not sure I remember anything after leaving Schooners that night!

I asked this question today at Captains corner.  They do both.  The original 2 stacks in the Center telescope while the 2 new scrubbers on the outsides tilt.  If you look closely at the outside stack you can see the curved rail that is used as a guide for it to tilt.  According to the Captain all 4 Oasis class ships have this same capability.

More pictures of the tilting outboard stacks from a different angle.

 

It seems there is a track that a carriage or dolly like mechanism will slide in to tilt the port and starboard outboard stacks.
