I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - welcome to the new Oceania. These are not things I have witnessed in the first 10 years or so  of sailing on Oceania since 2006.

The new Oceania

We've just cancelled our cruise which goes tomorrow on Riviera.  We have complete faith in Oceania as a cruise line however we didn't want to spend our cruise worrying and certainly didn't want to be incarcerated in our cabin should there be an outbreak onboard.  Oceania are allowing us to defer the cruise until next year so hopefully this will be sorted out by then!

"O" would be well within their (legal) rights to tell that couple that their "future business" was no longer welcomed and that any attempted future cruise bookings from them would no longer be accepted.  In fact under the T&C's ("Guest Etiquette and Consideration" clause) , they could have been involuntarily disembarked at the next port of call, leaving them no choice but to return home at their own expense.  They were not adhering to shipboard policies, they were not following the direction and instructions of crew members, and they were causing a general nuisance and disruption to the "quiet enjoyment of other passengers" on board.

 

Most assuredly, that's not the first time this man has done something like that in his life, and probably won't be the last time. Particularly, as long as he continues to "get away with it" with no adverse consequence.  If I had done something like that, I would no longer "have a wife" within about a week after we arrived back home!  😬

I know that some have been banned for future travel with Oceania but that is been for rather more egregious violations.  Not that I think this man should have been served.  I think they should have refused service and escorted him out of the restaurant.  Or perhaps ignored him until he gave up and left.

 

Just because there are empty tables, that doesn't mean they are not being saved for someone who has a later reservation.  That is usually the case.  And if he then were to choose never to sail with Oceania again, so much the better.

My husband and I are still going on this cruise, although we are in our sixties we are fit and well, i have been leading my life the same as I always do , went out fir dinner last night and went to the gym as usual this morning. As long as I keep up my usual hygiene standards I can do no  more. I travelled to central London for 39 years to work, survived the IRA and other Terrorist attacks , so I’m in!!!

As I stated in my “Live from Riviera” thread, Captain Maksym announced to us Riviera passengers that Oceania headquarters just has deployed on its entire fleet its highest level of sanitation standards (which sounds like a lot of wall watching by crew etc.).  We have one more day onboard until we disembark in Miami so I will try to report further before then.

Does anyone know what happens to any pre-booked excursions / cooking classes, etc.? Will Oceania issue future cruise credit or refund or is the money lost?  Thanks!

If a cooking class is not held, the money is refunded.  Today was a sea day so no excursions today on Riviera, just pretty rough seas, now abating.  We ate breakfast and lunch in the Grand Dining Room (Deck 6) rather than go up to the Terrace  Cafe (Deck 12.) 😁

Strange that my kids are all late 30's early 40's and range from mildly urging us to cancel to strongly pleading. And all we can say back is "hell no". We are older but very healthy and will deal with whatever illness that arises. Hopefully by the time we cruise quarantines will be a thing of the past. Interesting times.

Seems  if you are very healthy as you say, with no underlying health conditions, or have  compromised immune system, there is not much to worry about Covid-19.   Although, how are you going to avoid person to person contact or crowds?

No we are flying to meet the ship to Papeete from LAX. Ya know, I'm just going to be cautious but not sweat it. Some of you may think that's naive or cavalier but it's my perspective. Not going to stop cruising. It's too damn important to me. And if we're quarantined we'll eat reasonably well and we're readers and have our kindles. The dogs will be taken care of. I just hope there's some money in my IRA when we get home.

Fauci was one person and, IMHO (as a health professional), went overboard on his cruise comment.  There are places within your own town/city that would put you in closer proximity to people than a cruise, and you have no idea who those people have been around.  There are people in many places in the US alone who may have been exposed that you don't know about.  Good hygiene, keep distance from most people, and keep wiping down those phones, tablets, and purses and wait for this to blow over.  People canceling cruises for fall, etc. are succumbing to the panic that pervades society right now.  As has been said, Oceania is allowing a cancel up to 48 hours before the cruise, so wait and see what is happening.

That is true but you are at these places (supermarkets, etc) for a limited time whereas you are with the same people on a cruise for a week or more. You can be exposed in either situation but the odds are different.

Not to mention that if you should be unlucky enough to be exposed and become positive, it's a huge difference whether this happens to you within your own city or on a cruise ship - the difference being obvious.

I'm not even worried about catching the Wuhan Flu. I think it's all being over-hyped by media. What really worries us is if the ship is locked down in a quarantine or if we get to a port and they refuse docking. Those are the more concerning possibilities that could ruin the whole experience for us.

unless you always stay home, you come in contact with other people. None of us knows how many people they have passed in the past 2 weeks. Any of them could potentially be a carrier.  The unknowns are scaring people. Reading the news can really be upsetting.  
on Sirena enjoying my cruise. Ship is super clean. Having a good time.  Try to be positive and have a good time.  Just hope that we don’t face quarantine.

That is the problem.  To find your ship locked down.  And a 14 day quarantine.  Watch the Princess ships on the news right now.  No cruises for me till this is over.
