Oh, the days of shooting skeet off a cruise ship (Carnival 70's promo video)

We did this on our first ever cruise. (not Carnival)  Also hit golf balls off the aft deck.   Also watched them throwing giant black plastic bags of garbage off the aft, leaving a long trail of bags in our wake.  Some things have changed for the better!

And that is why I tell my wife to stay away from shopping on Carnival.  Too dangerous.

Definitely was real.  Did it on my first cruise in '84.

I hit golf balls off the fan tail several times on the Holiday class ships. They would actually remove a section of the rail. You would stand on a platform like you do at a driving range and flail away.  Initially they used old cracked range balls,  then switched over to the biodegradable balls which were actually fish food. 😀

Did Skeet shooting off Royal Caribbean Sovereign and Majesty in late 80's into early 90's. Could even hit Golf Balls off the ship, though balls were Biodegradable even then. Was a blast. Back would see dozens guys bring own Golf Ball/Clubs to each stop. Just won't see that now

I can't see a reason why Carnival doesn't offer a "driving range at sea" again today using biodegradables. Unless of course Carnival did a cost/benefit analysis and decided against this fun activity. 😉 golf_balls_dailymail.jpg

Correct.  It is a small enclosed netted area.  On Magic it was on the deck below the mini-golf/ropes course area.

I remember the skeet shooting and womping golf balls off of the aft deck when I was young. Also remember having visitors on the ship until just before sail away and then tossing a million pounds of streamers into the water as you left the dock...sometimes with nobody even there to watch... No buffets except the midnight and standing in a huge line to shake the Captain's hand on formal night-- although they were all formal by todays standards.

 

Good times, good times. Things have certainly changed and are better now for the most part I think.

No doubt about that. The food and service was really good then and it was more of a semi all-inclusive thing but the basic fare cost a lot more then even in old timey dollars. Good that us olds had a chance to experience that but I like the new ways better. 

 

Good memories but Grandpa is now exiting memory lane.

I remember all of these things.   Got dressed up every night for dinner!  What I really loved was having a deck chair (these big, heavy wooden things) "reserved" the first day. You would pick out the one you wanted, and they would put your name on a card and slip it into a metal slot on top of the chair, and it would be yours for the rest of the cruise.  No chair hogs!

For our family Atlantic crossings on the S.S. United States and the France the travel agent would forward my dad's deck chair reservation requests to the line months in advance and would take his payment at that time. Once aboard on the first morning the deck steward would escort us to our chairs. I continued this tradition with our brood on QE2. We like cruising these days with Carnival but at times am nostalgic for the traditions of crossings. Here's Deck Chair Steward Sean serving afternoon tea mid-crossing aboard QE2. The deck chair blankets or "robes" as they were called kept us cozy 😉
