The tour is pretty much the Tchou Tchou train route. Much cheaper to go to the Casino for some camembert, a baguette and a bottle of French plonk, then book the train from the cruise terminal market. When they said wine and cheese ,I thought New Caledonia is tropical. I don’t think there’s wineries or cheese made in the tropics.

All French as far as I could see.

Taxi ,Uber or shuttle looks about $80US to the airport . It looks like Anthem finishes in South Hampton early October 2024 and nobody knows where it’s going. On embarkation day we drove back and dropped the car at their depot in downtown Long Beach. Taxi from there to the pier was about USD 25 with tip. We also hired a car from Long Beach on debarkation day and had a drive along the coast, lunch at Malibu on the pier and then dropped the car back at LAX before the evening flight home. All worked well.

springaussie Posted December 4, 2022 #736 Share Posted December 4, 2022 (edited) “Discovery Class” is apparently the project name for the new ships around Voyager Class size. 2026 is when Ovation will enter dry dock according to the captain. This will be done in a port depending where the ship is based at the time. LOL Edited December 4, 2022 by springaussie

It's cattle class but provides another option and they're usually cheap. They have nonstop flights to Austin, TX if you want some excellent BBQ and TexMex. 😀

LOL Discovery class ,very interesting. I quizzed the boffins on the blog about a smaller ship ,they seem to think I had a mental issue. As they calculate, big ships cost less to operate per passenger and Royal being a mass market brand will never build smaller ships. Leave that to Celebrity . Perhaps they will use the same hull and superstructure as Edge class - they're about 130kt. Of course the facilities, activities and interiors would differ. I believe they need a ship just smaller enough to get through the Panama that can get to Alaska ,do the World cruises and maybe smaller ports like Tampa,New Orleans,Washington DC . Vision,Radiance and even voyager class are getting to 20 years or more and will become not viable. It won’t be long before they start to go. Panama Canal is no longer a restriction, but size certainly matters in some of the smaller US ports. Vision class at 25 yrs+ is even old by Aussie standards. Even 2/3 rds of P&O's ships are newer. I thought Rhapsody was a nice ship - 14 years ago.

Voyager class is to wide for Panama because of the overhangs not the water line. Yep ,old ships are like old cars, just to much maintenance ,to much fuel. And China is starting to build cruise ships for next to nothing but then you get what you pay for.

It was really unavoidable and never intentional. There was a problem with ABF clearance ( don't know the detail ) which delayed debark by a couple of hours which sadly had the inevitable knock on affect on embark and caused the unacceptable lines. Having said that we still had almost everybody on board by about 5 pm which isn't that much later than normal. No ABF obviously helped as it was a “ local” cruise. The Majestic tomorrow has a delayed boarding of three hours……..the times we live in I guess.
springaussie Posted December 7, 2022 #749 Share Posted December 7, 2022 We were on time arriving into Sydney this morning on Ovation. No one got off till 0840. We made our 1300 flight home. We got off the ship around 1030. Bag tag 26. Getting clearance was the issue.
resordanis Posted December 7, 2022 #750 Share Posted December 7, 2022 (edited) We were in transit. Even though it was difficult for some, we thought Royal and of course their shore staff handled it very well for us. I did see Graeme too inside the ship at the check in with card, but didn’t talk.😷 Edited December 7, 2022 by resordanis
