...I'm a metal-or-nothing person. For restaurants that already wash glasses and utensils, I wish they'd get on the metal straw wagon and only have compostables as a back-up.

Restaurants won't do this for the same reason places stopped using copper cups during the initial Moscow Mule craze, people will steal them.  A total cost loser for restaurants

You were really lucky!

You were able to have a chance to use the one "communal straw" per cruise that is shared, so it gets a *lot* of use before needing to go into the trash.

😱

They stole my bamboo straw on epic… I brought a bunch of bamboo and steel straws with me, and the one evening I used one of the bamboo straws the staff in Manhattan took it when clearing my empty glass. I didn’t realise it was gone until I stood up to leave the table.

All I can say is that on all the many many cruises I have taken, and all the windy outside places I have been in my life while using a straw ... nope. Never had a straw blow away. Something just tells me I am not unique in that way.

I get straws are a hot topic and trash in the ocean is part of that. I have to say that I never use straws, even for Pina Coladas, so I am good. Out of curiosity, I have tried a paper straw once or twice before, and from that limited experience, those seem to change the taste of the liquid and they get soggy quickly. I also tried a metal straw once, again curiosity, but it didn't feel right ... not sure what I mean. Just drinking out of the glass seems to work for me, but I s'pose I am relying on the glass to be clean or the alcohol in the drink will take care of things for me. 😉 Anyway, can't we all just get along? 😄

Hmm, I wonder where the sources of plastic in the ocean really are?  Bet there's a study that shows where most of it comes from and it isn't cruise ship straws. In fact I bet one could find it. No dog in this fight, I drink coffee and water or tea only
