I turned up for dinner in what I thought were acceptable (tailored, not sports) shorts recently on Constellation and the hostess discretely and with great sensitivity asked me to change as shorts weren't allowed in the MDR.

I had a very similar experience on the Equinox March 2018. First leg of our B2B cruise, first evening of the cruise I wore shorts into the MDR (SD) (like I always do on the first evening). We were greeted and escorted to our table. As we were leaving the Maitre D  discreetly asked to speak with us. He quietly advised me each evening going forward shorts would not be allowed in the MDR in the evening, IAW Celebrity's published dress code guidelines. No problem as I wouldn't think of wearing shorts and my wife wouldn't allow it. We all laughed about it. Second leg first evening I wore shorts into the MDR. As we were leaving the Maitre D spotted us and gave us two thumbs up and a have a great second cruise. I don't buy into the staff, especially the Maitre D is intimated by guests not following the simple published dress code.

Agree 100 %-- Good point

I was referring to lower level Staff who would rather leave the enforcement rules ( of any kind ) to higher level Staff members.

Can we all agree that the rules are really not hard to follow--- it's just the fact that there are rules and some folks just won't comply ?

The pandemic has made many people very casual. Not interacting with people in person, you don’t dress up. They stayed home, worked in casual clothing, often gained weight, and didn’t care about appearance. I didn’t wear makeup.   I didn’t go shopping in stores for new clothes. Only shopped online when necessary.  Even now, I seldom go out shopping.  I still have my cruise wardrobe which luckily fit.  When we chose to take a cruise, I packed it. I was shocked at what people wore. However, when you think about the past 2 years, it’s easy to understand the normal dress attire….at home casual.  From what I saw in June, I will expect that the way people dressed before the pandemic will sadly become just a memory.

How come people that won't follow the rules in the MDR don't put up a " stink " about not smoking in the casino or anywhere else on the ship ?

Why would I want smoking allowed inside the ship?  It stinks to high heavens and is a safety concern. My fashion sense should have no impact on you.

I could care less what you wear --

What does bother me are people that won't follow the rules.

All this crap over putting on a friggin pair of pants and a clean shirt.

LOL-- What ya gonna do IF the Captain wants his/her picture taken with you ?

Why do you assume because I want to wear golf shorts that I wouldn't be clean? Always clean clothes.  I take 3-4 showers a day while on cruises - Probably bring enough clothes on a 7 day cruise to last me 12-14 days.

If the Captain requests a photo (super strange) I guess I'd oblige.

So if or when they change the rule, you won't be bothered?  It's the existence of the rule, not the actual fashion?  Just trying to better understand your statement. It's the refusal to adhere to guidelines that bothers you; if they changed the guidelines you would not be bothered?

I hope you never get the opportunity to explain to a judge how you understood the State Penal Code to be 'guidelines' or 'suggestions' rather than 'rules' ... 🙂

Or a local or state building code.

YOU got it !!

"It's the refusal to adhere to guidelines that bothers you "--- Correct

"If they change the rule  , you won't be bothered " --- Correct.

" It's the existence of the rule, not the actual fashion "--- Correct

( I never thought for one minute that you would not wear clean clothes ).

ALL I'm saying is " Follow the rules , whatever the Cruise Company establishes . Make it easy for the Staff, as their job is hard enough without passengers putting them in an awkward position to enforce the rules " . It really is that simple. Whatever the rules are, let's just follow them.

Maybe we will meet one day and share a laugh or two over all of this ??

Why are lots of you getting upset with other people ignoring the dress code?  Celebrity obviously doesn’t care. Give it up and accept the new normal.  Celebrity is now a no dress code come as you are experience.  If you like it, great. You have found your cruise line. If you don’t,  then avoid Celebrity. It’s your choice.  Stop dictating what you want other people to wear.

If this is true then Celebrity should simply update the dress code and people can make informed decisions on their choice of cruise line.  Right or wrong, people do choose specific cruise lines hoping for a particular type of experience.  We choose different lines and itineraries depending on if we are cruising with children, looking to tour a lot, looking to chill by the pool, etc...and the consumer should be able to count on the experience being as advertised.

Oh Boy, ( for the 10th time ?? ) it's not the dress code per say, it's following the Rules  ( see post 185 ).

LOL----It's like driving in Quebec where a red light is only a " suggestion " and a yellow light means " sped up".

Not my experience on two Celebrity cruises since the restart.

Genuine question so someone wearing shorts spoils your cruise experience? I get it’s breaking the rules but on our last cruise in May, people were turning up before their check in times, pushing in queues at bars, hogging sun beds, etc etc. Rules are consistently broken, seems dress code is the one that matters. Going to tell myself off soon for joining in the debate 😁

If you’re ever on a cruise with Alejandro as the cruise director ask him about the time he was CD on a cruise where clothing was not optional.

The Reflection is doing a "Bliss Cruise" on November 13th. It's a swingers cruise with clothing optional areas. I'm boarding the 20th. I don't even wanna know.

Per their website Celebrity is not a "no dress code come as you are experience."

Onboard Dress Code

Smart Casual attire can be enjoyed every other night of your cruise

Women should feel comfortable wearing:

  • Skirt, pants or jeans with a casual top

Men should feel comfortable wearing:

  • Pants or jeans with a short sleeve sport shirt.

Note: T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurant at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed in the evening hours. The dress code will be enforced at all restaurants. And guests are asked to follow the Smart Casual or Evening Chic dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances. The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening.

Me and my husband respect the MDR rule, to be honest we don’t think the restaurant is all that good anyway and being from the UK with the weather being far better over there he won’t pack trousers as he’s on hols. So the MDR rule doesn’t matter to us but the theatre (spelt correctly 😁) rule, get real, who sees when you’re sat down? Think I might start a new thread on that rule 👍

No - none of the things you mentioned will spoil my cruise experience.  What I don't understand is the belief that someone can do whatever they want as long as they feel that it shouldn't bother anyone.  Generally the purpose of having rules/codes/guidance is so we don't have to make that decision individually.

The first cruise I went on (many years ago) I was disappointed to find out that the pools and hot tubs were closed each night at 5pm as people were expected to be a bit dressier at night.  I guess I could have just removed the nets from the hot tub and jumped on in since it wouldn't bother anyone.  Glad that rule was eliminated 😀

Oh - don't get me started on the people who go to the show in their pajamas and bring along a pillow in case they get tired. 😀

How come no one gets offended by people dressing how they choose in the theater?
