sewgood Posted December 11, 2022 #2 Share Posted December 11, 2022 Great capture from the car Leigh. Two nice mid sized ships. One a little bit more expensive than the other. 😁

We only saw the Noordam at first but as we drove closer to Station Pier, Orion became visible. Noordam sails later tonight and Orion overnights leaving later tomorrow night. Docker123 Posted December 11, 2022 #4 Share Posted December 11, 2022 I took a couple of shots this morning from my side of the Bay, about 4km I think, Viking facing us. Will post if any good.

SilvertoGold Posted December 11, 2022 #8 Share Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) Appreciate the great photos! Always great to see a HAL ship that we've been on. Could someone explain which dock? The one by the stadium which is quite far from the centre of Melbourne? Whichever dock, could we walk into town? Cruise ships dock at Station Pier, Port Melbourne, about 5 kilometres or so from the central business district (CBD). There is not a stadium close by, are you thinking of Wellington, NZ which has a stadium almost next to where cruise ships dock? There is a tram/light rail station close by where you can take the tram into the city. They leave every 7-8 minutes. The first image shows Station Pier in relation to the CBD and the second one shows the pier and the Light rail station.

Your info is very helpful and the maps excellent :) Would you know if the area around Beach and Bay is worth the walk from the dock? Have read that is an interesting area with a lot of shops and restaurants. Thanks for your help. Edited December 11, 2022 by SilvertoGold

There are a few cafes/kiosks right on the foreshore, for example the Sandbar at Middle Park which is about a 30-35 minute stroll. Also as you come off Station Pier on your left are a few cafes and restaurants.Bay Street Port Melbourne, is the main shopping hub of Port Melbourne. It is probably one of the oldest shopping strips in suburban Melbourne. I have highlighted Bay Street in the map below. If you feel like walking as far as St Kilda, there are many wonderful cafes and restaurants. It would be an hour or so walk.

As well as the 109 tram which can be very crowded there will be the 109 bus labelled as the cruise shuttle which leaves from just outside the terminal building and takes you into the city. We caught the tram last week but it was standing room only for the return journey in the afternoon. 1

When you get into Melbourne's CBD (either by tram or bus), you can travel around the heart of the city on the free trams. Get on and off as much as you like. 1
