Can I cash a check at Guest Relations?

Recommended Posts

Years ago, we could write a personal check for cash at Guest Relations if we spent more in a port than we planned and needed some extra cash for the next port. Is this still an option? I do not like to use credit cards in foreign ports. Are traveler checks even an option now days? Thanks.

Go to the casino. Put your seapass in a slot machine and take money put and have it charged to your on board account.

And they charge a fee.

My bank reimburses me for all ATM fees worldwide (and doesn’t charge me foreign transactions fees). I have a travel checking account just for this purpose because I hate carrying cash. I might have $40 on me when I travel.

Follow the advice above. It's really very easy. I was a bit hesitant, but I asked at the casino cashier about it and they even gave me a little folder that stepped me through the process.

What happens if you lose your card?   Curious on the back up option at that point?

Personally I like to have several hundred in cash and at least a couple credit cards.  Not all on my person all the time, but with me on a trip in general.  Losing several hundred isn’t really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, and it’s never happened in my many adventures around the globe.  I have had a card denied due to the account being locked by my bank however. I was glad I had cash and other options.

So zero fees?

Keep in mind you get injured in a foreign country they only accept cash at most small emergency centers.   I’m guilty for this myself.  And worry all the time. I never carry more than 100 in cash with me at ports.  But I usually have a card with a big limit with me. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Not sure why you "quoted" my post as it was just a general comment.

Provided you are not using a fraudulent card to pay your bill lol!! I can’t believe Royal somehow let that family book 22k in cabins using fraudulent credit cards then had them arrested at the end of the cruise. Like if they know it’s stolen cards why let them board in the first place?..????

I thought that most cruise lines add a fee of 3% to 5% to do this? I cannot believe Royal Caribbean do not do this.

They used to when you took money out at the cashier. When they switched to taking it out via the slot machines the fees were no longer charged.

First Question?  What is a check?  No one really uses those anymore.

Second Question?  Why do you think a check is safer than a credit Card?

Out of the three items, check, travelers check and credit card, the credit card is the safest, less risky, way to transact business unless you use local currency.  (USD you get robbed with also with made up exchange rates).

Ships actually now have an ATM machine, so if you need "cash", than take it out of the ATM but really, use a credit card.  It is safe and I have used it in 38 different countries.  Now that cards have chips and many are touchless, the ability for fraud is much harder.  Plus you are protected.  Most credit cards you can also set it up to "alert" you for every transaction with a text.  It's literally almost impossible for you not to know you were charged.  Unless of course, you don't believe in using mobile phones either but with them, incoming texts are usually free or at the very low amount of $0.10 in some cases.

I might also point out, that fraud does not happen only in foreign ports, but can happen anywhere. there is no greater risk than in your home town.

Only carrying $40 is a bad idea. Your card could be rejected. The ATM networks could go down. There could be an emergency where you need cash. I take about $500 on a cruise. I also keep about $500 at home for necessities in case of a natural disaster and the grid goes down. Some think you should have $1000 at home. My $500 home cash stash come with me on a cruise. I also use cash from that for any needed cah tips.

RCI would not be notified it was a stolen card until they did their $99.75 pre-auth.  If that was declined, and RCI did nothing shame on them.
