Hello everyone,

I know today is “Get over it” day.  However, I was having trouble getting over the mistaken medication incident in the ER from Monday.  So I decided I had to do something about it in order to GET OVER IT.

So I got busy this morning. First i called Hilton Head Hospital to ask for the person in charge of Assigned Risk at the Free-Standing ER Facility I visited.  After being transferred to about 5 different people i finally talked to a nursing supervisor, who sounded horrified at what happened to me.  She told me she would look into it and would get back to me.  She also told me it had to be excalalated because a doctor placed the order for the incorrect medication.

That was about 11 am.  i am still waiting.

Next, I found out the name of the CEO of Hilton Head Hospital and wrote a letter to him.  Snail mail PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL so that he gets it.  I explained the whole series of events and asked him to investigate the matter and get back to me.  i told him how concerned I was with the cavalier attitude of the doctor and that no instructions were given to me nor the name of the medication until I asked.  I also told him that I would be very wary of seeking any treatment at any of the facilities operated by Hilton Head Hospital in the future (and there are many in the area) because I could not be sure the same thing would not happen again and the next time it could be more serious.

I enclosed a copy of my discharge summery, which makes no mention of the mistake.

I then put it in the mailbox.  I have done my part.

Now i can GET OVER IT.

Terri

You did the right thing.  There should be someone take a look and see what went wrong.  This shouldn't happen!

Good afternoon, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  I didn't have a Barbie doll, I had a petite little "Debbie" doll - a cute little redhead with an amazing amount of clothes sewn by my mom.  It's a lot easier to get over it than to forget about it . . .   I'm not one to panic, and have been known to keep a very cool head in some pretty stressful situation.  After an event, I can crash and burn, but I'm usually able to manage through things first.

I'm late to the party today - this morning DH and his son went out to the son's acreage (about 1.5 hrs away) to check on an elderly neighbour who hasn't been feeling well.  DH tried calling and was unable to get an answer, so thought the best thing to do would be to drive out to see him, as he lives alone in the country.  It turned out the old guy had forgotten to pay his cell phone bill, so had no service, and although he was feeling better, he didn't want to struggle through the snow to drive into town to pay the bill and get it hooked up again.  I'm glad it wasn't anything worse, especially when he's by himself!

When DH left the house, I decided it was time to get to work in the sewing/computer/junk room.  It's hard to work in there when DH is home, because he often needs or wants to use the computer, and I like to spread things out when I'm cleaning and straightening.  First you make the mess, then you clean it up is my philosophy.  It turned out well, though, because I found the instructions the tech left when we had our previous computer installed - it gave detailed directions on how to import my old Outlook file to the new one (which I still have to purchase).  It's amazing what you find at the bottom of a box!

@Vict0riannsending good vibes for a successful surgery and quick recovery for your DH.

@smitty34877I'm so happy to hear you've found someone to help you with Tana; your family has been doing it on their own for so long, you need a break.  I hope she works our beautifully for you and Tana.

It was a brisk -25C this morning but has warmed up considerably - there's a developing low pressure system coming up from Montana that will affect the southern part of the province - apparently we're a little bit north of southern, so will escape it's wrath.  The current prediction is for about 6 to 7 inches of wet, heavy snow, along with strong winds, which will likely bring about hazardous driving conditions.  Glad we're not involved in that one!  I did check our forecast and it's still saying there's a 60% chance of snow on Saturday, so we'll just have to wait and see.  As I'm typing this, I can see the red emergency helicopter flying past; whenever I see them, I always say a prayer for both the flight crew and whomever they may have as a patient.  We always hope we'll never have to see the inside of one of them, except as a display.

I'll pass on the drink of the day, but that wine is certainly within my budget!  I like today's menu suggestion, as I love going to Shwarma restaurants - yum.  However, we have leftovers from last night's dinner out with our friends - DH has a pork cutlet, and I still have 3 delicious lamb chops (which they sprinkle crushed pistachios on once they are cooked).  There are lemon roast potatoes as well, so I'll just add some steamed vegetables and we'll have a nice dinner with very little effort at the kitchen table tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, especially those dealing with man made and natural disasters.  Cheers to all with celebrations.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Wow, great looking dinner. Expect me for dinner tomorrow nite. Will be arriving British Airways a little late!

Maybe if I add a little garnish to my peanut butter and jelly sandwich for dinner and take a photo it might look good!

Gerry that is so nice of your DH and his son to drive that long distance to check on the elderly neighbor.  Thank goodness he was okay.  And funny thing, I find I get a lot of work done around the house when DH is away doing something else.  Until he retired I was used to having the place to myself all day and used to get lots done.  Strange how that works!😉

I am very glad you did that. Medication mistakes should be taken very seriously. At best they may not have serious consequences but at worst they can be deadly.

Good afternoon.   There are strong rain storms north and west of us, but the are moving away.  Our heavy rain will probably begin about 9 pm and last through most of the night.  I did get my walk in about four hours ago before the sky started getting darker.  Since then, I'm been catching up on small chores that I've been putting off, until I couldn't put them off any longer.

Good morning all! (still morning here) 😉

I never had a Barbie, didn't really want one.  I was more into my (live) pets, not dolls.  My best friend had one though, even though I thought we were past the age for dolls 😅  Not quite sure about "get over it" and will try not to panic today or any day.  Will pass on the drink, wine and meal.  Tonight will be baked sole, salad and baked potatoes.  Apia is on our itinerary for the Grand Australia next year.  Thank you Sandi @StLouisCruisersfor the great photos!  I see that there weren't any last time it was the port of the day, so very much appreciated today.

We have another rain-less day, so I'll try to get out in the garden.  High is supposed to be 50.  Other than that, not much on my agenda.  DH has an appointment to see a specialist about his back and possible surgery.

Roy @rafinmdSo glad you slept better last night!

I hope everyone has a great day.

Carolyn, I hope your DH doesn't need back surgery, but can try other treatments for his back.  That surgery should be the last resort to solving the problme.

We went to the market, and then to the Villa Vailima for a "kava ceremony".  I didn't taste it...   There was dancing and then more dancing as we sailed away on the Statendam.

Terri, I'm glad you took steps to let the hospital know what happened.  Knowing the patient wants answers and might not use their facilities in the future, will hopefully spur them to investigate the incident and make changes.  You were lucky there were no serious side effects from getting the wrong medicine, but others might not be so lucky.

Wow! We are almost the same age. I grew up in a town of 125,000 people. There are three of us who were close friends, whose parents were close and we went to school together and were all born on the same day and year. To this day I think our parents must have had a wild party nine months before our births for this to happen. I want go beyond that! 😀

Thank you Lenda.  The doctor is sending him to a physical therapist.  Apparently there are also shots he could get that stop the pain signals up to a year (I'm probably not saying that right).  So yes, no surgery!

I had favorites on my computer, Holland America on CC was the first one, and now there are none.

Poltergiest!

Penny called today, she and Jessie had to have their cat Harriet cross the rainbow bridge with complete Kidney failure, she was old..

So many losing their fur babies.

Phones are fried again on the campaign, made for a long after noon, i took a longer break today.

Failed to dial.  I had 47 failed to dial out of 60 calls.  DH says the phones are still not working.

Going to be a long second shift.

I have a suggestion, but it is too late for it now.  I would have looked up the name of the most prominent law firm that specializes in malpractice claims in your area and would have added them as a "copy to" on the letter.  That would certainly get their attention!

The “meal suggestion” and the recipes @dfish provides always inspire me.  Shawarma is dish that requires Middle Eastern spices; it has a very different flavor profile than a Greek gyro.   It is easy to prepare your shawarma spice mix.  Here is a simple blend:

 ¾ tablespoon cumin

 ¾ tablespoon turmeric powder

 ¾ tablespoon coriander

 ¾ tablespoon garlic powder

 ¾ tablespoon sweet Spanish paprika

 ½ teaspoon ground cloves

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, more if you prefer

My family knows I love to cook and often gift me unique kitchen ingredients and utensils.  This year, receive a subscription to Piquant Post.  Each month I receive three spice blends from a single region, as well as recipes that are easy and quick to cook.  You can also view additional recipes online and reorder the spices.  My box introduced me to shawarma and it is a delicious blend.  I frequently use it on chicken for my DH and mushrooms or cauliflower for me.

Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough. Emily Dickinson is one of my favorite poets.  I agree that we should find joy every day, in the simple things.  Holding a grudge, get over it.  Don’t panic, take a deep breath.  I hope everyone is able to find some JOY today.

I was really confused with all the Greek Chicken recipes that kept coming up.  I knew Greek chicken wasn't the same, but that's what I got.  Except for the site that won't let me in cuz I won't pay them money.

Debbie, @dfish and anyone else interested in hiking Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, I found some pictures that show the trails between Signal Hill and the Johnson Geo Centre.  They should give you an idea of what is available.  Part way down, there is another building with a lot of cannons for protection.  BTW, when I was looking on Google maps I noticed the Centre is temporarily closed, but my best guess is, it's closed for the winter.

You can see the trail and stairs leading from the Cabot Tower area.

The point with the building and cannons, and on the right hand side is the Johnson Geo Centre.

I think I could even manage the walk down from Signal Hill.

Thank you so much!   I'm hoping the weather is good so we can do this.  This is a tremendous help.

Today I had the handyman from He double hockey sticks here to install the light fixture in the dining. room.  First, he couldn't figure out how to change the wire so we could swag it to middle of the room.  He did take the light apart and I think I know how to do it.  He was here for 4.5 hours.  He broke the light switch, so we had to replace that.  Then it took him 30 minutes to put the switch plate back on.  Then he wanted $50 an hour.  Most of the time was him looking at things and trying to figure out what to do with them.  I could have done the job in half the time.  But, then, I read directions.   Grrrrr.   At least the UFO lights are gone.

You did the right thing.  There should be someone take a look and see what went wrong.  This shouldn't happen!

Thanks Sandi.  We will see what comes of this.  I don’t plan to sue them for malpractice since there was no lasting damage, but they have to know what happened.

I am very glad you did that. Medication mistakes should be taken very seriously. At best they may not have serious consequences but at worst they can be deadly.

Thanks Nancy.  That is exactly why I decided to report the incident.  What if they had given me medication that would have been harmful?  I am just wondering when and if I will ever hear from them.

Thank you for the vote of confidence Lenda.  I specifically made the point that if it had been a different medication that there could have been more serious side effects than spending the night in the bathroom.

We will see what comes of these reports.

I have a suggestion, but it is too late for it now.  I would have looked up the name of the most prominent law firm that specializes in malpractice claims in your area and would have added them as a "copy to" on the letter.  That would certainly get their attention!

Ray

That is a good idea, but it is too late.  i don’t intend to take legal action—at least not now.  I don’t know if I would feel right about doing that.  I may still write to the state board of medical examiners about this.  My one real problem was how nonchalant the doctor was about the whole thing.  The one problem is that my discharge summary does not include anything about this incident.
