Why is Disney so expensive?

Yes, simply because its Disney is a pretty accurate answer.  They have a huge demand for their product and can command premium prices.  They also rely on lots of theming on their ships and a high level of customer service and character interactions.  That probably makes their costs a bit higher than others.

The fact that there is also no casino adds to the cost as well.

It's just because it's Disney. Until recently they literally could not raise the price high enough to deter people from going. There are families from all over the country who have timeshares and visit their parks multiple times a year. They finally hit a wall with their Galactic Star Cruiser when they tried to charge $6,500 for a two night "cruise."

It's Economics 101 - Supply and Demand.  If people are willing to pay their high prices and cabins remain heavily booked, Disney will continue to take your money. 

 

A better question for you to ask would be, why are people willing to pay so much to cruise with Disney when there are other more affordable options out there, like RCCL?  Answer:  Because it's Disney.

For the same reason Disney World tickets are so high, and staying at a Disney hotel costs so much more than off-property.

 

Disney delivers a top quality product.  But you pay for it.

on other lines that you pay less do you see this in the buffet every day, at lunch no less. They don't do a dinner buffet.

exactly. They were understaffed like every other ship but everybody was always pleasant and smiling and willing to help whenever asked.

The standard of service on Disney Cruise Line is unlike anything else I have personally ever experienced anywhere. I am not particularly well-traveled so that isn't saying much I suppose, but still. I was wowed.

I'm more like you and I am in 100% agreement. Our room steward said he has been with DCL for 11 years and our waiter said he has been with DCL for 13 years. They must be treating them OK or I'm sure they could look elsewhere.

They could go to any line they want including the uber-premium lines with a resume like that. But they stay with Disney for a reason.

It's funny the amount of people who on the disney board take their tips off saying they want to make sure they get the tip money. smh If they weren't getting their money do you think they'd keep working for the company?

Every day I walked through the buffet it was there. The picture was from sept 3, we embarked on the 2nd.

We went on Disney several years ago.

 

Then we moved to Celebrity which is good but not as good.
 

Also the service and buffet on Disney is superb. Also the embarkation lunches- fabulous.
 

The dine around restaurants taking your servers with you is inspired. When we have grandchildren we will be back!

Although I have not sailed on Disney - from people that I know that have - the food and service are over the top for what is in essence a niche cruise line. If you want the food / service of a mass market cruise line because the price is right - then you get what you pay for.

I have had the opportunity to experience several lines over the last 15 years and I would say although Disney is initially more expensive I have found by the time the trip is over its very similar in price.  I did a NCL cruise to Alaska and the price was about 5900 and the same cruise was 7500 on Disney.  I ended up spending 7300 with the extra venues and activities on NCL and Disney my bill is usually under 500 extra.  So 7300 for NCL and 8000 Disney and overall my kids are happier with the Disney Kids experience.  I know it's 700 bucks difference but overall, I find the value better at Disney.  But I still enjoy other lines as well.

Post Pandemic Disney isn’t worth it. The service is now poorer and quality went down. Food isn’t good. But before the pandemic we loved it because it was top notch service and safe for food allergies. The experience was magical. Afterwards though, we sailed post pandemics no it was a nightmare. It’s why Disneys cruise line is hemorrhaging money right now and why they aren’t sailing full.

I just read a review on Insider.  The writer said she spent $5,000…a family of 4 for a week in a basic balcony.  She did say this did not include tips, drink packages, etc.  I wonder what she really spent?😲

I know someone laughed at this comment but it definitely has merit.   Cruise lines with a casino make a LOT of money from their casino's.  This allows them to offer lower fairs across the board to all passengers.

 

the fact that DCL does NOT have a casino, means they have to make up that money somewhere...  and fortunately for them, passengers are willing to pay more to sail with them.  Its been a few years since I've been on a DCL cruise (pre-pandemic) but my memories are extremely fond and I cannot wait to sail them again.  (funds force us to the "casino" laden cruise lines for the time being)

Disney has really set themselves apart in many key areas. I've only sailed post pandemic and all lines have suffered a loss of service and increase in prices to some degree. The Disney theming and service is a big value add for a lot of people. I know people who aren't huge fans and still rather cruise DCL for the difference in service alone. It's not any one thing, but when you get smiles and greetings from the whole crew, even senior officers, it really adds up and contributes to the whole vibe of the ship. The other thing is for families, staterooms make a big difference. An inside on a budget line is more difficult to manage than an inside on Disney. DCL still has daily towel animals and bunk beds put away every day and turned down every night. I'd rather go inside on Disney then balcony or above on another line and at that point the price differential becomes less. Lastly, vacations are for making memories. DCL is also excellent at setting up those memory making opportunities. When you go home from DCL you're way more sad to be leaving and itching to come back than on any another line, especially if you already love Disney.
