We are taking a group of business associates on a cruise. We are wanting to do 5 day from Galveston which means mexico ports only. I have not been to mexico in 2 yrs and was wondering if there had been any issues in cozumel or progresso? Hubby needs info or he will axe the cruise (prior military)

thanks in advance

If he's that concerned, I would go to State Dept. website and read travel advisories. It's unlikely the cruise lines would continue with Mexican itineraries if there were identified risks to their ships and passengers. Thousands of passengers do these cruises weekly without incident.

Stay inside the tourist zone. It is well patrolled by the military and police.

 I have never (after quite a few trips) seen the military on Cozumel or on the mainland in Cancun/Playa Del Carmen. Neither of those places are unduly dangerous in any way, beyond what would warranty ordinary prudence.

Mexican marine sentries and navy patrol boats are a common sight at Mexican cruise ports.

Exactly per above!

Port stops on the Caribbean side of Mexico are not a big safety concern. :)

OK...they are in San Diego and Victoria, Canada too. Your original statement about the military had me envisioning soldiers keeping order in the streets...

Actually it is a little bit different than the US. The federal army is deployed internally within the country on a continuous basis. You will see checkpoints set up on major roads going in and out of some cities on major roads/highways. How effective they are in terms of keeping order is somewhat debatable from my personal perspective and observation.

This being said, the average tourist has nothing to worry about - especially if they restrict themselves to the tourist areas.

Do San Diego and Victoria have soldiers guarding the cruise pier with fully loaded M16 and MP5? Or perhaps you don't even know what M16 and MP5 are, never mind a CB90 Polaris patrol boat.

No, but a significant number of cruises from Galveston have a US Coast Guard boat with a guy manning the 50 caliber up front.

We see them every weekend.

as of our retirement from the Navy on 1 December it was still off limits. however he WAS able to get an exemption for Costa Maya and Cozumel.( our other stop was Belize). the ones that do not get exempted at the ones in the Mexican Riviera, TJ and the like. west coast ports.

that being said he did have to swear to not leave the immediate port area in those two ports b/c of his job. ( not that we even got off, neither port does anything for us)

EVERY US port have the Coast Guard patrolling the harbor when there is a cruise ship there.

Other ports may have their Coast Guard doing the same thing. It is nothing to worry about!

the drug wars and the kidnapping and the other assaults are taking place on land. not at the port. there was LIMITED police presence in the two ports but since you can never tell if the Mexicali Police are corrupt or not, their presence is of little comfort.

past the immediate vicinity of the ports, you are on your own.

We cruise West Coast, including Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan and haven't had a problem. We go just outside of the tourist areas. Of course, anybody can get caught in crossfire. The problems have been between the cartels.

FWIW we're three grey headed gals, might have a beer or two at a local restaurant. We usually avoid restaurants and facilities catering to American tourists.

The forward deck gun on USCG boat looks more like M240 GPMG than 50 cal M2 Browning. But I get your point. Maintaining a high visibility show of force is an in-your-face warning to bad guys to stay away and go somewhere else. I appreciate the presence of USCG patrolling cruise ports and armed Mex soldiers at cruise pier.

Now you have me wanting to research the weapon!

What we see is no set schedule for the escorts, and sometimes a larger USCG vessel off the turn out of the East Bay channel to the jetties. Perhaps it's tied to the number of pleasure craft that cruise the channel.

Whatever the reason we love to ride bikes along the pier area and listen in on the VHF.

Mexico's East Coast has kept most of the nonsense under control.

With reasonable attention to detail you will be fine. As opposed to Chicago, Detroit, Houston or Washington D.C. Where you could encounter some real problems.
