Luau lady Posted August 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2013 I just read that Hal still allows smoking on outside decks and on balconies. Is this correct? I thought cruise ships had gone to no smoking. My husband and I are both cancer survivors and are surprised at this. Thanks for the info.

Smoking is permitted on verandahs and on a small corner of the aft Lido deck (not all decks).
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2013 HAL still allows smoking on all balconies and verandahs. I have seen people smoking on the aft pool deck -- and not just in one area -- people moved the ash trays to suit themselves. Also I have seen smoking on the Promenade Deck -- there are still some of those metal ash trays hanging on the railing on some ships.
KirkNC Posted August 29, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Yes they do, on our cruise in July we had a balcony right over a life boat. It had numerous butts that had been flicked from balconies, nice fire hazard.
Irish Eyes Are Sailing Posted August 29, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Yes they do, on our cruise in July we had a balcony right over a life boat. It had numerous butts that had been flicked from balconies, nice fire hazard. Don't remind me because we are going to have a balcony over the lifeboats in Nov. and I don't want to sleep with one eye open all night worrying about a fire! People should not do that, they should use an ashtray. If they flick the butt overboard and it is windy, it could blow back into someone's open cabin door into the stateroom. Not good. Kind of like flicking a butt out the car window.....if you don't do it just right, it can fly right back in the window into your car. Ugh.
comcox Posted August 29, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Below is HAL's current smoking policy: For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted. Stateroom verandahs Casino (Active players only) Seaview Bar Outside DecksSports Deck Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only) Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas. Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

If this is very important to you, you may want to consider Celebrity or Princess. Celebrity has the most restrictive smoking policy that I'm aware of and Princess does not allow it on balconies. Disney also recently banned it on balconies.

CruiserBruce Posted August 29, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 29, 2013 However, NO cruise line has totally banned smoking. Carnival tried it with ONE of their ships. That experiment failed.
Taz Posted August 29, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 29, 2013 A call to Ships Services confirmed that smoking is also allowed on the entire starboard side of the Lower Promenade deck on "some" ships, including the one I'm on next week, Veendam. I guess that will limit my walking to the port side, where fortunately, my lanai cabin is located.
Rare Hlitner Posted August 29, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 29, 2013 However, NO cruise line has totally banned smoking. Carnival tried it with ONE of their ships. That experiment failed. True, but Celebrity is has certainly restricted it in a way that one can easily avoid smoke. On Celebrity they have banned all smoking inside the ship and on all Verandahs and now restrict it to a very small part of the outside decks. Oceania has a similar very restrictive policy. On those two lines it is truly possible to enjoy a cruise without ever catching a whiff of smoke :) The line we find most amusing is Princess. After they suffered a horrible onboard fire that was most likely caused by a cigarette (they speculated that a cigarette was tossed off an upper deck and blew back into another balcony ...starting the tragic fire) the line went to great expense to install outdoor heat detectors and sprinkler systems on all passenger balconies. But they kept getting so many complaints about smoking on the balconies that they finally just banned all balcony smoking (after spending all that money to make balconies safe for smoking). Rare rafinmd Posted August 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 29, 2013 If you hate smoke Celebrity is for you. I hate smoke and I hate Celebrity. They have so restricted smoking that it is concentrated in a few places that are hard to get away from. The Solstice's miserable "jogging track" passes by a smoking area that is less than 8 feet from the furthest edge of the track. Another is at an exit from the Solarium that has a raised center area making it awkward to walk out on the right side. On the Summit the ONLY public deck with a good view to port is the port side of the lido deck, always a miserable stench. I would really hesitate to book a Celebrity Cruise without a port verandah because there is NO appropriate public viewing area. On HAL the Promenade deck is wide enough to allow a wide berth from any smokers. Roy
Luau lady Posted August 29, 2013 Author #14 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Oh Boy, still too many smoking areas for me. We have already booked on the Ryndam and really love Hal. We did a Panama canal trip 2 years ago and the smoking was an issue for me. However, the only real problem I have is people smoking around the pool and on the walking deck. I spend a lot of time trying to walk off all the extra calories and having to walk through smoke really bothers me. I guess I should avoid the desserts.Lol!!!! On the PC cruise people were smoking around the pool and no one said anything. Anyway, my whole point was I was hoping smoking had been banned and it hasn't so I will cope. I am not at all picky except about that. We sail in Nov and I am excited.
kakalina Posted August 29, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Smoking is still legal and therefore allowed on ships. The places vary from ship to ship in the HAL fleet. The only place left to smoke inside is the casino ( if you are playing and spending money ).
Palm Bay Cruise Couple Posted August 29, 2013 #16 Share Posted August 29, 2013 OMG! Those that smoke on board are in the minority, a very small minority at that. From what I have observed recently, on the Maasdam, the Seaview Bar area on the Port side, Portion of the Casino slots, a very small part of the Lower Promenade. The smoke in my opinion was more prevalent in a very small part of the casino, although hardly smellable. Just because a person dislikes the smoke is no reason to criticize those that do, if it is that bothersome those that constantly complain should look in to chartering a ship for there interests. sail7seas Posted August 29, 2013 #17 Share Posted August 29, 2013 However, NO cruise line has totally banned smoking. Carnival tried it with ONE of their ships. That experiment failed. That is such old, out of date news that it hardly is relevant all these years later. It was a very different time, there were many more smokers, they never changed the itinerary, did not market the ship well........ should I go on? You probably know all that but perhaps others would think there is some current news about it so thought I would share how long ago and in a whole different time in our society. And, you probably should add Paradise sailed smoked free for something like ten years.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 29, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Carnival's Paradise sailed smoke-free for six years, from October 1998 to September 2004 when she allowed smoking that was still restricted but more in line with Carnival's normal policy. During that time, the percentage of smokers in the US population went from 25% in 1998 to 22% in 2004. Today it is 18%, having just dropped in 2013 after years of stalling at around 20-21%. Speaking only for myself, I wouldn't equate a difference of 4% to 7% with there being "many more" smokers in this period.

Those who forget history...I was simply pointing out that a) there are no totally smoke free ships or cruise lines, and b), that the one notable attempt to go totally smoke free appears to have not succeeded. I also agree that there are fewer smokers today. We were just of Eurodam for 22 days. There were noticeably fewer smokers. DW is sensitive to cigarette smoker, and hardly noticed a thing. Yes, there were some, but the number was either much smaller, or the restrictions are effectively reducing the impact of smoking on others. As my father died from lung cancer after many years of smoking, I have no love lost for smoking. However, I am also not of the opinion that we can totally outlaw and isolate smokers. The number is dropping, and we are VERY happy to see that.
