pe4all Posted September 29, 2014 #26 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Another tragedy that could have been averted had the person followed the rules and stayed out of a restricted area. If the ship was sailing back into the POM this morning, the bars would have been closed. If alcohol was involved, they probably can't blame Carnival. That is one knock on my cabin door, or phone call from Carnival I never want to experience.

Big_G Posted September 29, 2014 #29 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Very sad indeed. I just hope posters avoid the 'stupidity' comments here. Somewhere a family is grieving over the loss, maybe even a CC member.
spearmint Posted September 29, 2014 #30 Share Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) It has everything to do with stupidity, sorry for being so blunt. Sorry, but I agree. Not that the poor boy was stupid, but that he obviously did something stupid.....as any one of us can do and probably have done. Very ufortunately, his consequences are greater and more grave than he probably expected. I assume as has been mentioned that he has a grieving family, and I hope that they can come to terms with their grief. I feel bad for the boy and for them. What a sad situation. waterbug123 Posted September 29, 2014 #31 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Having a 20 year old son of my own, I read "20 year old man" and thought, "Man?? He's still just a boy, at least to his momma." My heart breaks for his family.

chengkp75 Posted September 29, 2014 #36 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Doubly sad, because even if he had not fallen, he would most likely had a lifetime of illnesses from the massive amount of 3cm and 10cm radar waves he would have received up there. Even the crew don't climb that mast at sea, and there are specific lock out procedures before going aloft there. Not only are there warning signs prohibiting access, but warning of the radar danger. Civilian marine radars rarely have a power density of more than 10W/m^2 when you're a meter away from them. Assuming this guy weighed 90kg and had a cross-sectional area of 1m^2, his SAR would've been about 0.11W/kg, well below the 4W/kg needed to produce known adverse health effects according to the WHO. lady_cruiser Posted September 29, 2014 #41 Share Posted September 29, 2014 I think the majority of us, when we were his age, all thought we were invincible. It's too bad that a split second decision can forever change the lives of love ones . Prayers to the family.

hdowney Posted September 29, 2014 #43 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Heartbreaking to hear. His poor family. Abd to some degree the fellow cruise passengers. I'm not sure how I would handle something like that happening on my cruise. Sent from my GT-I8730 using Forums mobile app
Ocean Boy Posted September 29, 2014 #44 Share Posted September 29, 2014 Why would someone try and climb something they shouldn't.... Seriously? Why do people make poor decisions everyday? The kid, and yes I mean kid, was only 20 years old. College age kids don't always make the best choices or think out the consequences of their actions.
