What are your biggest cruise pet peeves?

Oh, and people who leave their balcony light on all night, or all the time. I like leaving my curtains open, sheers shut, so I can awaken at early light. Or, just sit on my balcony later at night to view the sky. If the light is on, I shut my heavy curtains, but next cruise if my neighbor leaves the light on, they will get a "friendly reminder" to shut it off.

 

In fairness, there are a lot of people that do that they don't even realize they are. I can tell you it never occurred to me one way or the other until I read about it here. You do know that most people don't think about it the way you obviously do. Often they just close the curtains and go to bed without realizing the effect it has on other people - or even that it DOES have an effect on other people.

My fave was the mom who sat her kid up on the counter by the soda machines. The kid proceeded to put his head under one of the spouts press the handle, and drink directly out of the machine. Ewwww. I told the mom that it was disgusting. She glared at me but did remove her son. In hindsight, I probably should have said something to a crew member but I was in utter shock and disbelief!

These have been interesting to read! It seems that many people have the same peeves:p. The crowded elevator issue is also annoying to me, to the point that my feet have been stepped on, and I have been subjected to skin contact with sweaty people! On a recent cruise we were in an elevator that was crammed full, us being at the back :(, when a rather large person entered and the alarm sounded. It was funny because she turned around and looked at everyone else ha ha!.

Another thing that has come to annoy me greatly is other cruisers who feel compelled to comment on American politics and policy. When they tell us who they are "supporting" for office, I want to tell them that it is then a good thing that they can't vote! That is one reason we do My Time Dining now.

Sometimes when I am eating in the lido, buffet, I see people just out of the pool getting their lunch. No cover ups, just their suit, but my pet peeve is that they didn't bother to put even flip flops on to come into where I am eating. Come on, how long does it take to slip on sandals and a cover up? I know, I know, I don't eat off the floor but I guess I grew up where shoes and shirts are required in eating establishments. I have never heard of this bothering anyone else but it really puts me off.

People who let their little kids go through the buffet by their self and I see them picking up stuff with their hands, dropping utensils on the floor and then put it back in the food. I have on more than one occasion had to tell the staff that a utensil was placed back in the food after being dropped in the floor by a little kid.

 

Another one is the parents who let their little kids run through the Windjammer dodging or running into people while the parents seem to be oblivious to it!

I agree about children in Windjammers. On our last cruise I saw one child actually eating from a serving utensil and putting it back.

Politics, religion and how much you paid for the cruise are all off limit topics for us with people we don't know. Therefore, we always sit at a 2 top :D unless traveling with friends or family. In that case, their are no surprises since we already know where they stand on the issues of politics and religion and, in many cases (since we often use the same TA), how much they paid for their cruise.

Our first cruise our MDR table mates were an elderly D+ couple, a middle aged gay couple, and us, honeymooners in our 20's.

 

The whole week went great and the last night the elderly man asked one of the other couple if he believed in God. The man did his best to dodge the question and change the topic but the older man persisted -- "I notice you did not answer my question".

 

It felt like the air was drained out of the room.

 

After dinner my wife spoke to the younger man about it and he was pretty non-nonchalant about it. "I learned a long time ago if you don't have something nice to say, say nothing at all".

Trying to get to the buffet stations when folks are clueless to the line behind them and just stand there in a daze.

I agree with the fact that although the "chair savers" are annoying, even more frustrating is the fact that crew members do very little to "clean up" the situation, even after hours left unattended.

People who MUST sit in the first row at the theater and "save" seats for their friends ..really..have you never seen live entertainment? If you want to sit there, show up early and don't have your friends save your seats!

I've noticed by many of the comments here, that there seems to be a single underlying premise exhibited .....when folks are on vacation, all manners and courtesy go out the window!

Just to defend the guy a bit, I don't think he was expressing surprise that this was a peeve of yours so much as surprise that this is something you actually encounter on a cruise. (I don't believe I've ever seen a dog in a stroller on a cruise ship, but I don't doubt it has happened.) So, I don't think only quoting that portion of it was not meant to make you look bad in any way, but rather to focus on that part of your post.

 

Generally, I think it's fine to only quote part of someone's post, as long as you're not doing it to try to take something out of context (and I don't think that was the intent here).

 

YES< there are dogs on cruise ships in strollers. We just did a TransAtlantic and there were 4 dogs on board, two of which were in strollers. Apparently their owners were spedning the summer in Europe, so the dogs came along.

I agree with you 100%. The buffets should not be self serve on any ship. In fact, I won't eat anything from a buffet station that is self serve for all the reasons listed here.

Your latest post indicates that you have an idea of what a buffet station looks like - but my question really was if you knew what they were used for.

 

Buffet - means self-serve, and a buffet station is where food is placed so people can serve themselves. If you don't like the concept, stay away from buffets - because people serving themselves is what they are all about.

I understand the annoyance of perfumes...I HATE them...especially when DOUSED in it, but you cannot be allergic to an odor. It is an irritant.

My biggest pet peeve was being awakened in the middle of the night. Once was an inebriated young man who was banging on our cabin door, thinking his roommate had locked him out. It wouldn't have been as bad if my elderly mother-in-law had not been in the cabin next to ours. We thought something had happened to her.

 

On the same cruise, we had to tell a group of teenagers to go hang out somewhere other than in front of our cabin door. It was after midnight.
