ATM Fees On-Board HAL

We have sailed on HAL since 1996 and there has never been an ATM on any ship.

Wow, that's surprising. What happens if you need cash for tips? Can you get cash at the casino and charge it to your account? Royal and Celebrity have ATM's. The fee is $6 but I use a card attached to an account that refunds ATM fees, so it doesn't end up costing me anything.

Does anyone know what the ATM Fees are On-Board HAL?

I have never seen an ATM machine on a HAL ship, but you can get an amount of cash against your credit card (the one the ship has for your account,) from the front desk. The charge is three percent of the amount obtained. But since my credit card refunds three percent of anything spent on HAL, for me, it is a wash.

Actually, a slight money maker since 3% of 1.03 is > 3 :).

There is an ATM machine on the new Koninsgdam and it is rightly located on the wall on the right (when facing forward) in the casino.

I was told that there is a daily limit of how much you can take out and that the fees are normal...in the circumstances. I did not get to use it so not sure (I think the limit is $150 per day) but there is definitely an ATM machine on Koninsgdam.

In spite of some bad critics about what the Koningsdam does not have, I am happy to report that there are a lot of new things that she does have....abundant technology, innovative computerized systems and tons of modern stuff are everywhere on that spectacular ship, and the ATM machine made it !!!! :D

The captain actually told us that the Koningsdam has 80% more new features and technology than any other HAL ship. Long due according to me, the flat 42 inches interactive wall mounted high definition television (on demand) for example in EACH cabin.

We have also sailed on HAL since 1996 but we just recently discovered the wonderful Koningsdam and we absolutely loved the ship. And yes, there is an ATM machine on it. The New Statendam currently under construction will also have one for sure. And many innovative features introduced on the Koningsdam are now being introduced on the older ships, so maybe (hopefully) it is just a question of time for he older part of the fleet to get some modern technology.

Since we know we will need cash for tips, we bring cash for tips from home. We also bring cash for other predictable expenses, ie, souvenirs, etc.

I bring some cash with me when I leave home. I also bring sufficient in Travelers Cheques that I can cash at the Front Desk for no charge.

I have plenty of cash for additional tips, and to get home, that way. I save any leftover Travelers Cheques for the next trip (they don't expire).

Jimbo59, you definitely won't get Falkland Islands currency from an ATM on a HAL ship and I would not count on the front desk to sell any. I would ask your Falkland Islands tour company for their suggestions, I doubt that many tourists obtain Falkland pounds in advance.

Holland America quoted a 7.7% markup over the interbank rate on euros on our November 2016 Prinsendam transatlantic. I do not know if that is typical of what cruisers would find with other currencies at other times. For comparison, Wells Fargo marks up foreign currency by about 5 1/2% any time I check, better customers may get better rates.

Where does one now buy Travelors Checks?

I noticed on their website that BoA no longer sells them....

I get them at my branch of Citizens Bank (they are in several states) right around the corner.

If I want foreign currency I have to go to a branch further away!

Thank you for the correction. I didn't notice it on my cruise.

Glad to here they are starting to put them on the new ships. I think every other line I have sailed has them. Not a big woo to us as we just bring enough cash.

Wow, I thought Travelers Checks were a dead technology. I didn't know they were still issued.

I would never bother with them on a regular land vacation, but I can see their usefulness on a cruise ship.

They are very useful on a cruise - especially longer ones.:). They are getting harder to find, but they are still available. I don't bother with them on a land vacation but on a cruise they are very handy ;)

We did a long cruise earlier this year on the NCL Sun and I was pleased to be able to use the ATM in the casino. Would be glad to see this added to more HAL ships. We tip a lot and I don't like having that much cash to look after before I board, particularly on a TA where you board in one currency and disembark in another.
