Unused onboard credit

I find this a bit odd as we cashed out our OBC to use in the Casino. I think we had about $170 left. I would assume Park West OBC would be treated the same as Royal OBC.

Both refundable and non refundable OBC can be cashed out at the casino. As you are a casino member you don't pay the 5% fee.

Only refundable OBC can be cashed out at guest services.

I know what the terms Refundable and Non Refundable mean. Can someone explain the differences as it applies to Royal. We have always been able to cash out OBC in the Casino. We were given $x in OBC for Park West purchases and cashed out in the Casino. I had no clue there was a difference.

Thanks

Troy said it was from the casino to use at Park West. Must be a perk for those that play more than the penny slots.:D

No, he didn't say that.

But in re-reading, I see that he wrote that PW gave it to him for purchases.

So Troy not only loses his money in the casino, he loses it on PW crap.

:D

(JMO. YMMV. :D )

My bad:o. I had incorrectly assumed that since he said he'd been given OBC to use at PW that it had come from the casino as he is a club Royal member.

You're definitely right about losing twice though.:D

We had two OBC's, I think it was $150 for Next Cruise and $150 for PW. I do need to check to make sure.

But, the question is... I believe we have been able to cash out OBC in the Casino. We have not received OBC yet from our TA as we book through Club Royale and then transfer to TA.

That would be Non Refundable OBC. I know we have cashed some out.

Trust me, I only watch SO bid. I get the free drinks and she bids.

Isn't that the way it should be. Kay's has hats and shirts that say on the back, Happy Wife, Happy Life.

So, here's a related question that I'm curious about. If there is a "mix" of OBC's (in my case $100 NextCruise + $450 pre-paid), is there a way to insure that RCI will apply the non-refundable to my account first to that any excess will be refundable?

My pessimistic assumption here is that RCI would apply my $450 refundable OBC first before using the OBC that they gave me...

You are correct. That would all be non refundable OBC which as you have experienced can be cashed out at the casino.

It's only refundable OBC that can be cashed out at guest services or the casino.

I know it seems weird saying that you are cashing out non refundable OBC but in effect they assume that you are going to use it for gambling and not just pocket the cash. Some ships casinos have even started only giving slot vouchers of non redeemable chips instead of cash but there is a workaround for that as well.

Royal has always applied the non refundable OBC first for all my cruises. According to guest services that is standard proceedure.

I think I understand (I hope)

Any OBC may be cashed in the Casino "for Play"

Only Refundable OBC may be cashed out at GS or Casino.

Correct???

We just came off Freedom back to back on the 18th. We had the RC promo GETTO program with $300.00 non Ref. OBC for each cruise. Had $75.00 for each from agent for each. Ended up turning in $600.00 at casino. The casino member sheet we got and also cage say "may or may not charge 5%. They charge the 5#. So we got $570.00 back in cash. Better than having to go buy things we didn't want. Already did 2/1 specialty. Bob

Sometimes (for me anyway) it is worth paying the 5% not to have to stand in line at GS to get the money. Sometimes the lines on the last day are very long.

On Navigator a couple of weeks ago they had one GS Rep with a separate line dedicated to cash settlements - which included cashing out refundable OBC's - which moved very quickly. We had our OBC cash in hand in about 5 minutes.

We were charges the 5% but were given RCCL chips, Had to play - If we won we received real cheaps in return

Has that policy changed and they are giving back cash?

What ship was that? I have heard about that but have never had that happen to us. We had no problem getting cash on the Majesty last month and on the Oasis this month

First I've heard of being given chips.

Mostly when they call it On Board Credit they mean for you to spend it on board. I always think of it like coupons. If I use them I get a benefit and if I don't it didn't cost me anything. We've never had any trouble coming up with stuff to purchase.

True, as it would apply to non-refundable RCI sponsored OBC's - so spend it as you can. But refundable 3rd party OBC's are the same as cash in your pocket if not spent by the end of the cruise - so cash in any remaining value not applied to your on board account and take the money.

It depends on the ship. You should have also been able to get a voucher for the slots. With the slots voucher you just insert the voucher into the machine and then you can hit "cash out" and it will give you a pay voucher that you can redeem for cash at the casino cashier.

If in doubt guest services can tell you whether your OBC is refundable or non refundable as they are coded differently in their system. Can't remember if this shows up on your in room account viewing on your TV.

Non refundable is supposed to be used first to offset any charges to your account.

I'm a little late to this party but I don't think anyone else has responded to this particular point yet.

I can confirm that at least for me, while on Liberty a month ago, the in-stateroom account review on the TV clearly distinguished between non-refundable and refundable OBC (separate line items).

I had approximately $7 of OBC left over (part of the refundable OBC from my TA) and this was refunded to my credit card right on disembarkation day. So clearly the non-refundable OBC was used first. (I confirmed this in advance, otherwise I would have just taken the cash at Guest Services.)

Thanks. That's what I thought but wasn't 100% sure.

Ah, we've never had any of that type! Thanks for the clarification. I wonder why they call it OBC if it's really like a cash advance? That seems confusing.
