Any way NCL will move out the Manhattan terminal and into Red Hook Brooklyn or NJ?

Is there any way, and I wish they would just move out of that awful Manhattan terminal to Red Hook Brooklyn or somewhere in NJ? NCL just has the best deals going, they seem to care about winning your business, and I would honestly sail with them exclusively if they would get out of that Manhattan terminal. I hated, I mean hated, despised that terminal on our first NCL cruise last Sept/Oct on Breakaway. Breakaway wasn't my favorite either but we had a blast, enjoyed the cruise, LOVED Bermuda as always, LOVED our Aft Balcony that was enormous and a great deal, I just hated that terminal and having to go into Manhattan.

Red Hook is owned by Carnival Corp, New Jersey is owned by RCI.

 

If not owned then long term lease, at least.

Agreed. (And not just the day before. Lots of folks who don't live in NY come in and spend more than a day.) Also, the sailaway from the Manhattan Terminal can't be beat.

 

And... I don't think the Terminal is that bad. And who cares, really, once you get on the ship, fuhggedaboutit.

I hear you guys but I really, really hated that terminal. It's too small for the amount of passengers that sail on these megaships now. I just didn't like it, sorry.

And yes I know those other terminals are owned or leased by our lines but they did with something out. Build a new terminal somewhere else in the region. Just my opinion.

The terminal is not that bad and the best part of sailing from there is passing the Statue of Liberty . You don't do that leaving Bayonne or Red Hook. Honestly 25 cruises out if NYC and I live here but that sail away never gets old !!

I have to agree. I cruised out of NYC for years when my dad worked at those terminals as a port engineer. The cruise down the Hudson, past the Statue of Liberty never got old and was one of the highlights of our cruise.

 

One of the things I found on my last cruise on Breakaway was to get there super early so you get a good seat and can board earlier. We arrived around 10AM and were on the ship by 11:45AM last time we sailed and it was great.

NYC port is too expensive and a hassle if you simply use it as the point of embarkation/disembarkation from outside of NYC. If you want to spend time in NYC before or after, it is a convenient port. If you live in or around NYC, then it works. If you don't on either account, then avoid it.

And the Port Authority of NY and NJ owns the Bayonne cruise terminal. However regardless of ownership, Carnival Corp. and Royal Caribbean have lease control of Brooklyn and Bayonne, respectively.

 

Since Brooklyn and Bayonne have only one berth each, there's no way NCL, which has two ships based in NY 52 weeks a year, could ever change its base of operations to either.

I live about 3 hours from Manhattan; about the same distance (give or take) from Baltimore. Never sailed out of Cape Liberty or Red Hook, but I'm sure they're comparable distances.

 

Of all of them, NYC is by far the easiest, and we don't spend time in NYC before or aftercare or live in or around NYC.

 

We can take a bus into Port Authority for about $75pp round trip and Uber to and from the pier (for about $15 each way). A grand total of under $200 and we don't have to worry about gas, tolls, or parking in the city. AND I don't have to drive. Hop on the bus at home in the morning and my vacay has officially started.

 

Tl;dr - using NYC as a port of embarkation/debarkation without visiting the city is ideal for us. YMMV.

Sorry guys I just don't like the terminal. I don't like its location. Its crowded, its chaotic and its too small to handle the amount of passengers that use it. On the day I sailed there were 2 other ships in and it was total chaos. Then on disembarkation there were employees yelling at each other and yelling at passengers. Yes those things happened. I have sailed from Cape Liberty 4 times and nothing even remotely like that ever happened. I have sailed out of Red Hook once and again nothing like that. Employees literally yelling, screaming at each other and passengers. This is why I hate that terminal whether you like it or not.

You guys are a bit sensitive, sorry for hurting your feelings. I will continue to cruise, I will skip the Manhattan terminal that's all. To the guy who said they get to the terminal at 10 AM and get on at 11:45 that is not good. And hour and 45 minutes to board is pathetic.

Given that boarding in most any port does not start until around 11:30, the poster in question possibly boarded within 15 minutes. Because he chose to arrive early, he made the choice to wait a bit, but he was rewarded by probably being among the first on.

 

Embark and Debark are the worst part of any cruise, there is no getting around it. We just have to suck it up if we want to cruise. We've sailed out of 6 different ports. Our experience in San Francisco terminal was the worst, Miami is sometimes no picnic, Vancouver the best. But I can't think of any port, including Manhattan, that I would not sail out of again. It's really not that big of a deal.

I've been wanting to try The Haven and I see that friend and family thing they running right now. That might make it possible. Does that promo extend to The Haven? How insane in a good way is it being in the Haven?

Try the Hilton Garden Inn in Ridgefield Park, NJ. They've been offering a sleep/park/cruise package that includes transportation to and from the port, but don't expect a $100 price.

At the very least booking the Haven will address a lot of your problems with with the cruise terminal because you'll have a private check in lounge and waiting room, plus escorted priority embarkation and disembarkation. But that's just the least of it. The Haven offers so many benefits...you really have your own private small ship within the ship.

$40 a day in Manhattan isn't too bad for NYC, and it's an easy drive from the GWB, and even easy from the tunnels on a Sunday morning. You are not going to find a $100 a night hotel in my area of NJ, either.

Yeah I just checked and the lowest was $5,100 for 3 and the 3rd was free, that's for Haven. I'm gonna have to think about that because to be honest that's not ridiculous for what you get in Haven. Boy I'd love to do Haven. You get all 5 perks too so that's another thing. I'm afraid we'd be so spoiled we wouldn't be able to go back to non Haven cruises.

My DH and I have sailed out of all three terminals. Princess out of red hook, celebrity and Royal out of NJ and carnival and NCL out of Manhattan. Imo the easiest was bklyn. Unfortunately no Bermuda cruises out of bklyn Bayonne Isn't so great but has been improved over the last couple of years to accommodate the big rc ships. While driving and parking in manhattan isn't great, tourists have wonderful things to do day and night. Ample reasonable pubic transportation options. Bayonne isn't a tourist paradise Red hook is up a coming with new restaurants and public transportation options into manhattan. If you like NCL or Carnival leaving from manhattan not inconvenient. You do pass the statute of liberty from Bayonne

I thought the same thing, that there was only one berth at Bayonne until I arrived one day for the Zenith and there was this other ship docked at the usual berth we had used for Zenith previously. The other ship was a big surprise.....not only that there was another ship, but also because it was not a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity ship.

Don't know when the last time you sailed out of Bayonne but the new cruise terminal and the new parking garage are huge improvements. I have also sailed out of all three and the worst was Manhattan for Breakaway, horrible, but when I sailed out of Manhattan on Dawn, Pacific Princess, Veendam, and Zenith it was not so bad at all. The problem was that Breakaway has so many more passengers. Red Hook I sailed out of twice, the first time by the way, straight to Bermuda.......

 

So sometimes the ships out of Bayonne pass the Statue of Liberty but not always. They will if the harbor master gives the okay. Out of Red Hook we passed by the Statue of Liberty once out of the two. They got permission to sail up the Hudson, and around governors island. I didn't care much for Red Hook, hard to get to.
