Royal Caribbean hints at big reveal 11.7.17

I've been wondering when another cruise line will bring a large and/or new ship up to Alaska. It would be awesome if it was Royal Caribbean with Quantum class; that would make a lot of sense. NCL will be the first with Bliss in Summer 2018, although that ship's pax count is just barely over Explorer's (its gross weight is expected to be way higher though).

I'm guessing Coco Cay improvements and/or Quantum class to Alaska.

Unless the port stops change significantly...the Quantum ships are too big for most of the the Alaska locations currently used...so not likely. Royal just started going with the Navigator class to Alaska in recent times....where Radiance class was the norm for years. There are some narrow and limited navigation locations that prevent ships beyond a certain size to pass.

Also, In several recent communications, including ship launches and travel agent business announcements...they indicated that most of the Quantum ships remained targeted for the Asia market, with Anthem staying put out of Bayonne for the time being.

You can't post items from you gmail account. (Unless you give us your user name and password [emoji41])

If it's text you can copy and paste. If it's an image, you can upload to an image share site and post the link here, or use tapatalk on your phone and you can directly upload the image to the post. 3rd option is shrink the image to a teeny tiny jpg and attach it to your post in the reply. (Max image and file sizes are listed when you go to attach the file to the post)

Norwegian Bliss @167k tons is scheduled for round trips out of Seattle all next summer stopping in:

Ketchikan (Alaska), Juneau (Alaska), Skagway (Alaska), Victoria (British Columbia)

Don't know why a Quantum Ship @ 168k tons would be to big for those ports.

Again....those stops exclude some of the long-standing and popular/scenic places RCI ships have frequented for years - because larger ships simply won't "fit" or the port isn't cleared to accept larger ships for ergonomic/licensing reasons.

Royal used to sail from Vancouver Canal Place port...but moved now to Seattle because of local pressures to reduce the number of cruise ships.

Quantum may fit those couple of places...but phenomenal locations like Tracy Arm Fjord (just one example) and others can't hold larger ships. People will have to accept more touristy places rather than scenic places with larger ships. That might be OK for some...but they won't know what they're missing.

Last but no least, Alaska is in the midst of retooling their entire shipping licensing policies - there have been numerous reports of whales, sea lions, and other wildlife being killed by existing cruise ships. There are also pollution concerns by residents in those port areas. Larger ships won't bring any improvement.

At one point, the Alaska state legislature was actually looking to reduce the number of cruise ship lanes and destination ports for docking. Those things appear to still be on the table for consideration. Perhaps the Ketchikan & Juneau permissions for Norwegian Cruise lines are "experiments" or temporary...to see how things go. In any case, there appears to be little appetite from Alaska to "open things up" to a number of larger ships - and at least some folks support that position.

The only question now is whether it's Quantum or Spectrum.

I would have leaned toward Qauntum a few months ago, but the timing and other issues may point toward Spectrum.

I don't think so, as RCL announced some months ago that the latest Q class(Spectrum?) with its latest technology, would be destined for Asia to join the other Q ships. There was too much criticism from Paxs to the Quantum--from the lack of Royal Promenade, DD, etc. Also, remember, Quantum has been refitted by decreasing the Music Hall and converting into an extension of the casino to suit the Chinese market.

I think that adding a Quantum class ship to do an Alaskan itinerary (even if it is a modified itinerary) is a brilliant move by Royal. It will open up another itinerary (other than the Caribbean) to a whole demographic sector of the cruise industry who has no desire to sail on a smaller, older ship that lacks many of the amenities of the new ships. For many cruisers it is more about the ship than the ports and this will allow those people to experience the best of both.

This is really no different than sailing on the Oasis out of Barcelona that visits some of the highlights but can't get into the smaller unique European ports that the smaller ships visit.

And so was Legend for the 2017 season.

The Ovation information is far more current confirmation and relevant to this topic - news on Legend wouldn't pass the smell test in a "big reveal".

Actually...there are huge differences...most of which were outlined in my previous post on this topic. Size matters...but there are a number of other issues that come into play just to get approval to sail into a destination port.

I'm confused at the point you are trying to make. Big ships are coming (NCL Bliss is confirmed & by the picture posted we are assuming some type of Quantum Class ship). We are agreeing that they wont make it into the smaller ports but will dock at larger touristy ports. Just like Oasis class ships in the Med that go to the larger ports that can handle them but not the smaller more intimate ports.

Can you clarify?

Thanks.
