Trivia?

On Equinox there was a daily music trivia and some people were winning with perfect scores... while the music is playing some would use their phones to use the ap Shazam which identifies the song and the artist. Some would have this sent to their smart watches so they would not be caught...

Even when other groups mark their score sheet the cheaters would not be caught.

I usually get about one out of 30...

The solution is simple, play the soundtracks only once and quickly so that ship internet would never catch up...

Cheaters always prosper when the system organized by honest people.

Never allow people to mark their own answers.

We are trivia buffs and take part in all the quizzes that we can. At the beginning of the quiz, the moderator usually reminds people that no electronic devices are to be turned on, and the groups are usually sitting close enough to each other that this would be too obvious. I agree that there should be no self-marking, and the papers should always be exchanged. We've never seen anyone cheating. On our most recent cruise, tickets were given out to the winning teams, or to 2nd and 3rd place as well, whatever the moderator wants to do. On the last day of the cruise, they put out a selection of celebrity trinkets that you can redeem your tickets for. We have enough "stuff" already, so I usually give my tickets to another participant, often a young person if I can find one! I like the moderators who have a good selection of questions that are not geared towards North American culture, and are fair for all nations that are represented on the ship. There are a lot of world capitals, currency around the world, and scientific and technological questions. It's all good fun, and I go home with a trove of questions for our family trivia quiz evenings.

I can only speak for our cruise of 10 days on Summit. We enjoyed the cruise, but the trivia was the most minimal we have ever encountered out of 24 cruises. There was a nighttime progressive music trivia that was enjoyable. Seven other days had one other trivia session. One day had two others; one other day had no other trivia. They were testing using hand held devices for some games to answer from a choice of three, but the questions were annoying. How deep is ...? 10,000 ft. 11,000 ft. 12,000 feet. Best guess trivia.

To compare, our cruises on RCCL have four to six trivia sessions per day plus a daytime progressive (our experiences on Grandeur, Enchantment, Anthem, Explorer, and Oasis. The one exception was on Allure. Very poor trivia by RCCL standards.

I know that a certain CD likes the handheld guess machines.

The CD onboard Summit takes his trivias seriously and even does one himself.

why do so many adults cheat?? Last cruise we checked our own answers and the group beside us wrote answers in that they missed and marked then as right .. then they won fist place . Ruins it for others

On our cruise, most of the Activities hosts allowed teams to correct their own. One gave a wrong answer to a difficult question and one team got it correct! We had other issues like 9 people on a team when 6 was the limit. Use of cell phones during the game was also noted. This occurred despite jokes about the "life altering prizes". I was amazed on how intense people were during trivias.

Competition breeds bad behavior. Best prizes, best seats, best food...

I don't like the trivia for two reasons, cheaters and staff who treat it like they are only putting in their time and do not care. This isn't only a Celebrity problem. I don't get how there is no oversight on such a popular activities that is done multiple times a day.

so i guess i should stick with royal...

the only reason i was considering switching is the smoke permeating the ship from the casino (on royal)..

but my love of trivia surpasses my hatred of leaking second hand smoke...

I wouldn't recommend Royal over Celebrity simply because of the trivia experiences. We enjoy general knowledge and music trivia many times during cruises, regardless of the cruise line.

With regard to the smoking, I really don't understand why it's being allowed on any ship at any time. With the danger of fire being one of the most urgent concerns on a ship it doesn't make sense to allow people to light a fire device to start a tobacco fire. I enjoy a cigar whilst playing golf but don't need any form of tobacco while on a cruise. I guess I'm just one of the lucky folks who have never been addicted to tobacco products.

I have done trivia on both RCCL and Celebrity. About equivalent IMO. Yes you will run into occasional cheaters everywhere (trivia and life in general) but most teams are honest. Some teams do cheat but in many cases they are just in it for the fun. Certainly not in it for the trivial trivia prizes. Most are probably not evil and likely are decent folk otherwise. They probably would not risk cheating in the casino but who knows really. Others take trivia very seriously, and I understand that too.

We enjoy trivia at home and on cruises but on our last back to back cruise on Constellation the trivia quizzes were very poorly managed by the entertainments staff. They accepted answers that were wrong, let people mark their own papers, used the same quiz on both cruises and generally didn’t understand some of the questions they were asking.

We cruised on Oasis this past Feb. I thought the trivia on that cruise was better than our recent trivia on a few Celebrity cruises.

RCI staff seemed to enjoy it a little more than X. We did play a progressive. Hope that helps!

PS We still prefer X overall. In spite of the trivia.:p

i haven't been on celebrity, but from our experience, the RCI staff definitely seems to enjoy trivia....at least on the ships we've been on...it's not just asking stupid questions, but an opportunity to entertain and make people laugh...

Yes, if trivia and entertainment are more your thing, stick with Royal: much more than on X ;).

I agreed that the music trivias are the most fun. The general knowledge trivias are frequently by some individuals who have been on the ship for many weeks and know which questions will be posed. I cannot figure out why they come week upon week.

There are people who cruise just for the Trivia competitions!

You would not believe the consternation over some Trivia questions. Old passengers moan if there are current top 40 chart hit questions and young people moan if there loads about the 50's and 60's. Or the questions are too American orientated or conversely too British.

It's just supposed to be a bit of fun!

This one couple who won every general information trivia contest had been on the ship for many weeks. It was interesting that when the DJ did a difficult music trivia contest, this couple walked out in the middle as they probably were not going to win. All kinds out there.

These kinds of people are beyond rude. I don't do trivia, but remember a similar experience when we sailed RCI Freedom of the Seas and they had some kind of competition game at the ice rink (don't recall the name). Obviously a number of people had done it before and continually cheated to be the ones winning. Seriously people?!? Does winning and all the attention mean so much to you that you are willing to put yourself first and the heck with playing fair to everyone? I will just never understand how people can be so selfish.

Take a look at my CC name!

Love to play! I have found that Celebrity and Royal seem to be fairly comparable. One general trivia in the morning, and a speciality in the evening. (Music, tv theme songs, etc), with a different type of word game in the afternoon.

I also don’t know why people cheat, and always wish that the staff would take the time to find new questions for each cruise!

Trivia has also brought me some wonderful friends. Two years ago on the Summit, my DH and I paired with 4 others. Each from a different city on the East Coast.

They, and their spouses, have now become people we cruise with, travel with, visit, and play online trivia with! Serendipity!
