SPacificbound Posted April 28, 2018 #53 Share Posted April 28, 2018 Alcohol wouldn't matter to us one way or another. If they have it fine, and we usually get a couple of drinks at the evening show, but if they didn't have it no big deal. However, alcohol is a big money maker for the cruise lines so I can't see any of them dropping it.
CruiseGal999 Posted April 28, 2018 #54 Share Posted April 28, 2018 I would never cruise on a dry ship. I typically don't drink in my day to day life ... maybe 3 times a year I'll buy some wine and liqueurs for sipping over ice. But cruise vacation? Most definitely integral to the 'spirit' of the trip. Rare geoherb Posted April 28, 2018 #55 Share Posted April 28, 2018 We took a small schooner cruise off the coast of Maine that was BYOB. So technically, the cruise ship did not serve alcohol.
ilikeanswers Posted April 28, 2018 Author #56 Share Posted April 28, 2018 To OP,In your hypothetical example, would we be allowed to carryon alcohol? You specifically referred to a ship not serving alcohol. I guess that goes to my point of whether alcohol is integral to the enjoyment of your travel. If you feel the need to bring alcohol onboard I guess that makes it integral:D There will never be a non alcohol cruise . The cruise lines make too much money on the sale of alcoholic beverages. I know people are trying to be informative and it is great to spread knowledge:halo: but I was really more curious from a passenger's perspective if they feel access to alcohol makes their cruises more enjoyable, after all I don't think anyone purchases drinks with the mindset of increasing the cruiseline revenue;p

Marian Paroo Posted April 28, 2018 #59 Share Posted April 28, 2018 No way. That and a no gambling cruise would be popular with the kind of people who, I would want to be stuck with in a No Exist situation
Z'Loth Posted April 28, 2018 #60 Share Posted April 28, 2018 Even though I'm a non-drinker and don't gamble much (operating assumption: You budget the money and kiss it goodbye), I would not be advocating for a non-alcoholic cruise. The margins are just too great for the beverages. And, I can fake it with the ginger ale, root beer, and frozen smoothies.

Rare cruisemom42 Posted April 28, 2018 #62 Share Posted April 28, 2018 Since this is a very hypothetical question, I'll give a very hypothetical answer. There are some Muslim countries where cruise lines used to stop that required ships not only to not serve alcohol while in port but to actually remove all of it and lock it away for the duration that the ship was in their waters (e.g., Libya). There are also certain places I would like to visit due to their fantastic Roman ruins (e.g., Libya). So if, for example, there was some one-off itinerary at some point in future that visited this country (and/or others) and due to the hassles involved decided NOT to serve any alcohol for the duration of that cruise, I would be among the first to sign up. Otherwise, not so much. I don't drink much on a cruise -- generally a couple of glasses of wine with dinner; maybe another one or a beer with lunch if I'm onboard ship. But why would I want to go on a vacation where I'd have to be more abstemious than in my normal daily life?
K32682 Posted April 28, 2018 #63 Share Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) I wouldn't want to be on a cruise that banned alcohol. I wouldn't want to be on a cruise surrounded by the type of people who would require an alcohol ban. I'd rather put up with the occasional over-refreshed shipmate than the moralizing and proselytizing of the Temperance Annies. While I don't usually like to veer off topic I am a little perturbed by all the negative characterisations of non-drinkers:o by some of the posters here. Are these based off bad experiences with peole you met or is it the media in your respective countries that potray them this way? I can't say I have met an offensive non drinker and if it wasn't for certain situations where the topic came up I doubt I would be able to tell the difference between the non drinkers and the drinkers:p

I can't say I have met an offensive non drinker and if it wasn't for certain situations where the topic came up I doubt I would be able to tell the difference between the non drinkers and the drinkers:p I had the same reaction to that post. Wow. I rarely drink, but I hope I don't come off as moralistic or Puritanic. I don't care if others drink, I don't think drinking is 'bad', I just don't enjoy it; don't like the taste of beer or the hard stuff and while fruity sweet drinks are ok, just don't see the point. It doesn't make the cruise more enjoyable--for mel--, just adds extra calories and cost. I'm glad other people can drink if they want for their own enjoyment. My choice, not good or bad, just my preference. That said, as I said earlier, although it wouldn't bother me to sail on a cruise with no drinking, I don't think I'd like to pay the extra cost. We non-drinkers have fun too! Most of us are not judgemental.

I can't say I have met an offensive non drinker and if it wasn't for certain situations where the topic came up I doubt I would be able to tell the difference between the non drinkers and the drinkers:p While in general I don't have issues with non-drinkers (and didn't say so in my post), I suspect some of the answers are related to the way you posed the question -- if it is a totally NON-alcoholic cruise, it seems to me (and perhaps to others who answered) that it might appeal more to those who really do care A LOT about not consuming alcohol. Rather than those who've said they don't care either way -- and likely wouldn't choose a cruise specifically for that reason. I grew up in the Deep South in a dry county, and yes I've had negative experiences with non-drinkers. Also, on the first cruise on which I ever sailed solo, I was seated at a large table one evening with a couple who said right off the bat that they were very religious Baptists -- possibly because I arrived just as they were finishing praying, which is not a biggie. They made several comments about my (one) glass of wine with dinner. Not beyond the pale but not entirely comfortable either. Enough so that I didn't want to sit with them again. However, that's nothing compared to the lecture they gave to a young Jewish couple at the table about how could they "deprive" their children of the joy of Christmas.:mad:

BallFour4 Posted April 29, 2018 #70 Share Posted April 29, 2018 From a business/profit/loss standpoint, this is never going to be a choice you will have. Best answer so far. Cruise lines shift profits over to alcohol, casino, spa and shore excursions. Taking alcohol away wild add 50% to the cruise fare. .

Some were members of a religion that forbade drinking. Some have simply been anti - alcohol, smoking, eating red meat, and eating sugar.
drsel Posted April 29, 2018 #72 Share Posted April 29, 2018 I would travel on an alcohol free cruise if the price was right. I care more about the ports, shows, entertainment and activities. Unfortunately, without alcohol sales to boost revenue, such a cruise would be priced very high, out of my radar. The revenue from alcohol, spa, casino, art gallery, shore excursions, photos and gifts is what subsidizes the cabin cost of all the mass Cruise lines. It's the Robin Hood principle of life! Z'Loth Posted April 29, 2018 #74 Share Posted April 29, 2018 (edited) The Detroit Lions have not seen a NFL Championship game for a much longer time than the Browns. And the Texans and Jaguars have yet to make a NFL Championship game appearance. Of course, when was the last time the Bengals make a division championship appearance? About a year longer than the Browns. And, if you want to go by number of seasons rather than year, throw in the Lions and Redskins. Rare Hlitner Posted April 29, 2018 #75 Share Posted April 29, 2018 DW and I enjoy our adult beverages, much the same as we enjoy decent entertainment, good cuisine, etc. Can we live without a cocktail or a glass of wine? Absolutely! But why should we? So no, we would not book a "dry" cruise. And we also agree with some of the other comments that a dry cruise would likely attract too many who like to preach. I also would not want to be on a ship with no coffee. Hank
