$75 OBC for a $50 fare increase - would you do it?

Recommended Posts

I'd do it if I would have been using that extra $25 OBC anyhow, i.e, was it going to reduce my outlay for gratuities or some other expense I had already plannned on having.

I would not do it for so small a benefit. At least not without reading all of the fine print. There are many threads on cc about people being surprised by something doing this sort of thing.

I would do it in a heartbeat. If the fare goes down later and you lose it, who cares! I price check daily and if a better deal comes along I take it. If I lose it down the road for a better deal, then fine. I always compare what I will lose to what I am getting and make sure it is a positive for me and then I go there. Refundable/nonfundable does not matter when you are price checking.

Is your deposit still fully refundable? If so, I would take it.

What difference does it make?

I would not pay $50 more to get a $75 on board credit as everything on board is way overpriced so I don’t think you are really gaining $25.

So you'd rather pay $75 later than $50 now?

If you don't pay your gratuities ahead of time you're going to be spending at least that much onboard and you could use the OBC towards that

I don’t typically spend anything on board. If an OBC is included in my reservation I will make sure to buy something to use it in some manner, but I don’t typically buy anything otherwise. I book excursions directly vrs through RC as the prices are much better so no need for OBC for excursions either. If the OP plans to spend a bunch of money on board, then might make sense in that case.

Because we chose not to purchase specialty dining, drinks, souvenirs, etc. on board does not mean that we do not pay gratuities. We always pre pay standard gratuities and have tipped additional for exceptional service. I just gave my opinion on paying $50 more to get $75 OBC and understand my logic may not apply to others.

Why do you need to spend OBC onboard? Pay casino 5% handling fee and you can pocket the balance in cash.

I wouldn’t. You’re paying $50 more dollars to get $25 that you probably could have done without. I don’t like the idea of paying more money to get a benefit that you could do without.

The only exception is if there’s on board expenses you haven’t paid yet (like tips), then you may as well do it because the $25 will have to be spent anyway. But to get $25 that you don’t have to spend...I wouldn’t pay $50 more in cruise fare for that.

The fact is you do have to spend it unless you prepay your tips

Think of it as you need something at Home Depot and you can buy a $75 gift card for $50. Why wouldn't you?

Never say NO to free money.

But is it really "free"? Do you get to keep your cabin? Is it refundable? If one is on a refundable deposit, does this have to be changed? If another price drop comes along, can another change be made? All sorts of little questions like that need answering before establishing just how "free" the change will be.
