I read that they can't land the helicopter The helicopters are way to heavy to land on a cruise ship. Newer cruise ships don´t have a real helipad anymore but just a winch area. steamboats

Haworth Posted March 23, 2019 #34 Share Posted March 23, 2019 Passengers are being winched one by one, they had 3 helicopters but can’t use them all due to turbulence, to reiterate calm on board and crew are very professional 14
TrumpyNor Posted March 23, 2019 #35 Share Posted March 23, 2019 So far only minor injuries reported, some say 2 persons and some say 4 persons injured. Not clear if injuries happened during evacuation or before.

Heidi13 Posted March 23, 2019 #37 Share Posted March 23, 2019 The marine tracking website currently shows a Norwegian patrol boat and escort tug standing by the Viking Sky, with a SAR helicopter working overhead and 2 large offshore supply vessels enroute at speeds of about 4 to 7 kts. As per the previous response, helo ops are normally always completed by winch due to lack of re-inforced decks and the abundance of obstructions on the upper decks. From reading the news stories, appears to be an excellent feat of seamanship on behalf of the Captain in being able to get the anchor to hold. Wishing all the passengers & crew a safe and uneventful evacuation ashore. 7

Rare Presto2 Posted March 23, 2019 #43 Share Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) Just checked marinetraffic and I think she is now moving at 4 knots to Stavenger. Hope I read this right It is now saying 1.2 knots and facing another way. Really not sure what is going on but if you check this site you will see that there are lots of ships heading her way. It is good to see everyone go to their aid and a good Captain and crew taking care of everyone. Edited March 23, 2019 by Presto2
Rare cruisestitch Posted March 23, 2019 #44 Share Posted March 23, 2019 Watching to see more details come out. Did the ship have electrical power? How did they decide which passengers would be winched out? Are passengers being given the choice to stay on board? There is a scary and fascinating story unfolding. Best thoughts go out to everyone involved.
