mnocket Posted March 23, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) It's the Viking Sky and it's pretty scary. It was later able to restart one engine and is now anchored about 1.5 miles from land and no longer adrift. It seems they were actually airlifting passengers to safety. Markanddonna Posted March 24, 2019 #6 Share Posted March 24, 2019 I feel very sorry for everyone going through that experience but wonder: who goes on a cruise to Norway in March? I would have guessed small cruises serving those countries more like a ferry system, but for Viking to have a cruise there seems like an accident waiting to happen. Two of them are a 90 year old man and his 70 year old wife and rough waters do present a greater threat to the brittle and unstable. Everyone else seems to have survived quite nicely and now have a great story to tell.

Sliding furniture items that aren't bolted down are one of the greater dangers to personnel. When something weighing 100 pounds and travelling at about 15 mph slams into you... that'll be broken/fractured bones (if you're over 70) or at the very least contusions. If this nightmare ever happens to you, keep a sharp eye out for SFI! - Sliding Furniture Items

Poster is entitled to their opinion. I would find it to be a great adventure also. Sky diving, roller coasters, white water rafting, rappelling from a helicopter are all great adventures. You can have empathy for those who are injured during these events but still see the adventurous side of things.
celebrity Posted March 24, 2019 #15 Share Posted March 24, 2019 No intent to bully anyone but please don’t compare roller coasters, rappelling, etc to this event. Those adrenalin laden activities are by choice. These passengers nor crew didn’t choose this.
Bizmark'sMom Posted March 24, 2019 #16 Share Posted March 24, 2019 The expedition ships I have been on do have the furniture strapped to the floor. They string hand lines up so people always have something to grab if necessary. When you see the staff putting all of wine and liquor bottles on the floor in trays - that's your cue to put all of your own electronics on the floor and take some extra bonine. If Viking are going into these seas, they would do well to take a note from Hurtigruten and Lindblad, and modify their ships so that items can be secured quickly. Being rescued from the heaving deck of a disabled cruise ship by helicopter, slung underneath in the driving rain and high winds until you were lowered ashore? It would be awesome and a story you would dine out on for the rest of your life. Imagine telling that story at the MDR table on your next cruise. LOL. Corby114 Posted March 24, 2019 #18 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Latest report stated that the ship was able to restart three of the four engines and were being escorted back to Molde, Norway by three seagoing tugs. The next scheduled sailing on March 27th is canceled and they hope to make all necessary repairs as soon as possible. Company is also refunding all passenger fares on this sailing and the March 27th scheduled voyage. Captain must have thought that there was a possibility that the ship would have hit the rocks along the shoreline and be a total loss. Thankfully the ship makes it way back to Molde soon and the injured passengers and crew are taken care of.
Kartgv Posted March 24, 2019 #19 Share Posted March 24, 2019 For anyone wanting more information, there's a thread with at least 29 pages of posts on the Viking Ocean board. Posters include people who monitored online reports all night long, as well as actual passengers onboard and other CC regulars who had relatives onboard. That’s not as bad as it might have been, thankfully. For the rest, it will certainly make quite a story to tell!
hallux Posted March 24, 2019 #21 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Not shaming anyone, but I had to laugh at the guy who was on the ship on the news talking about how a wave crashed through a window and a bulkhead and said "it was like the Titanic". Dude looked GREAT for being 117+ years old!
4x4bob Posted March 25, 2019 #22 Share Posted March 25, 2019 Wonder how many on that ship did not want to go to the muster drill, at the drill talked to their neighbor, played games on the their I-Phone, took a little nap?

It might not been by choice (other the overall choice of profession). I agree it would a great adventure to tell stories about for years.
